Looking at other threads i'm not the only one with this problem. after installing the proprietary driver, graphics are slow & 3D appears not to be working. fglrxinfo gives this:

No mention of "glx" or "direct rendering" as in previous versions. sudo aticonfig --initial -f gives this: Uninitialised file found, configuring. Fail to link to fglrx-libglx.so, please check whether driver is installed correctly Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf Saving back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.fglrx Apparently driver not installed correctly. Also there's no fglrx-modialases (or something) in synaptic thats been needed before.
This is an Acer Aspire 5720, with a "Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller". Although I initially though this was a problem with my installation, so I ran both the Maverick and recent Natty live cds and the s video out only functioned on the Maverick cd. The computer acts as if there is another monitor, but the TV does not display one.

I have got apache displaying an index page but when i try to show a php file firefox just asks me if I want to save the file and doesn't display the file in the browser.I installed using some info from websites to install al LAMP Server which seems to have finished ok.I have tried using php from the command line to see what happens and it seems the html is being generated ok.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been working on this for weeks, and I can't get my egalax touchscreen to work with gestures in Natty. I believe I have been booting in Unity, but have tried in the traditional Gnome-top as well.
The screen just works like a one button mouse. I get out put from the mtdev-test, but nothing from gesture test. I've tried with and without the egalax-multitouch-driver-common installed.
There is no xorg.conf, but I don't think there should be one.
When I try to start Geany, it crashes with a segmentation fault. The current version is 0.20. I've tried to downgrade it to 0.19, but it didn't solve the thing.

(i m currently using 10.10 32 bit). before i go for a clean install, i wished to test natty (the stable release) by running it from my usb stick. i was able to boot into it and natty identified my wi-fi with a breeze. i wanted to test some configurations that i had customized in maverick. i installed conky in natty and copied the conky script that i used in maverick. i also installed the necessary sensors. now the hitch is the sensors are unable to detect the temperature. is it coz i am running natty from a usb stick or some bug is there in this part ?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to Natty, from Maverick and I can't get 'Workspace-Switcher' to work. As a matter-of-fact, I was completely dumbfounded when Natty launched for the first time, and I was presented with 'no' menus. What I got instead was some black-screen with some very attractive icons on it; but the icons had no organization to them that I could comprehend, and the categories that were presented didn't make any sense, based on the applications that I had installed. Apparently the designers of Unity thought that it would be a good idea for me to go 'fish' for my applications. Also, the most frequently used applications that I had pinned to gnome-panel disappeared, and I couldn't even rebuild them. The 3D menu, on the left, that combined my desktop icons, with the icons that were 'formerly' pinned to gnome-panel was also very attractive; but provided me with no useful functionality, other than complete disorientation and confusion. The scrolling was also slower than poo. All-in-all a very beautiful 'boat-anchor.' This distro should probably be renamed 'Virtual-Vista.' Fortunately, when I reenabled 'Desktop-Cube' and 'Rotate-Cube' and I think some other options related to Gnome, I got my menus and icons back. What a relief!!! I'm a power-user, and I have something on the order of 100 applications loaded. I just 'can't' go looking all-over-creation to find them...
Unfortunately, Workspace-Switcher could not be activated by clicking on it, only by <ctrl-alt-left/right arrow keys>. Also, unfortunately, all the desktops displayed the same applications. Definitetly 'not' a ready for prime-time player. I assume that this is a bug? Is there a work-around for this? If so, can someone please share it with me? For now I'm stuck with a ruptured-duck that can't swim. I usually have all four desktops populated, and switch between them whenever I have to wait on an application that's busy, or I get tired. I really 'need' this functionality.
P.S., It's more than Ok with me that a distro not be released, if it's not ready. I'd certainly prefer that to 'shock-and-awe.'
Long story short, my HTPC has a keyboard, but no mouse.I'd gotten pretty good at working the machine with no mouse, but after my upgrade to Natty Narwhal today, the Ctrl+Esc shortcut to open the Applications window no longer works. Alt+F2 only works when another application is already open.I can get to the Applications menu using Ctrl+Alt+NumLock and mouse emulation, but it's pretty painful.Have I messed something up here? My install went a little messy, but I've managed to get everything else working and I doubt a keyboard control would be a bad install/upgrade.

I quickly decided Unity wasn't to my taste, especially when I seemed to hose it by trying to customize my compiz settings with ccsm (don't mess with compiz if you use Unity in any way). Anywho, I retreated to standard Gnome and also installed KDE. Mostly OK, but I noticed neither of the menu editors are working properly. When I install an application from the repositories it creates a proper menu entry, but when I install a Wine application nothing appears in the menu. Attempting to edit, add, or delete menu entries with the Gnome menu editor doesn't work. Hitting the New or Properties buttons produces no effect. Using the KDE menu editor from the Classic (non-slab) menu is likewise unsatisfactory. I can add or modify entries and apparently save them but nothing appears in the menu and when I re-open the menu editor my entries are not there. I can manually create application shortcuts on the desktop or on the Gnome panel, but I can't add those to the KDE Quick Launch bar in the panel (I think that's what its called, I'm in Gnome now).

It looks (to my poor intuition) there is something wrong with my usb keyboard recognition....

The iced-tea plugin which comes with firefox just doesn't cut it for pogo card games.I seemed to have installed it correctly because when I check my Software Manager there is a green check on all of the sun java6 stuff. But when I go to tools/addons/plugins the only thing there is the icedtea (no sun java6 plugin). I may have to go back to using linux mint.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been running Natty on my MacBook Pro for a while now and then suddenly while just using it normally (not installing etc), my skype crashed and would crash again on restart of the program. Now this could be a red herring, but though I'd include as much info as pos.
I installed all the updates the system told me to, to see if this would help and restarted.
On restart, the wired network would not connect. I get the following errors in my log:

ipconfig does not exist on my computer, otherwise I would echo this for you also.
I have a Broadcom BCM4318 that isn't working with the B43 or the other (I tried installing both and while they supposedly installed successfully, neither shows up in the Additional Drivers tab for me to enable.) I tried using both sets of directions stickied up at the top of this forum. Neither seems to be working for me (no guarantees on whether I did it right) though the B43 is apparently the one I need.Disclaimer: I'm a total newbie to using command line and a new convert from Windows so I'm rusty at navigating and making things work, though things are finally starting to make a little sense after two days of hacking at it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with my sound in the Natty Narwhal version of Ubuntu, where my bass doesn't seem to be working and is coming out as fuzz instead. I don't really know the technical terms for what I'm trying to describe, but instead of the deep part of a piece of music, I get this kind of v sound in the background instead. I get the same problem on headphones or from the speakers, and turning the volume up or down doesn't make any difference. Alsamixer tells me that my card is called HDA Intel, chip ALC272X. I've already tried turning down the PCA volume, as I've seen recommended in other places, but no luck.

I'm using System Settings -> Keyboard -> Layouts -> Options -> Alt/Win key behavior and selecting "Meta is mapped to Win keys".
However the Win key still just pops up the files-and-folders window, and meta is not there.
This worked fine in 10.10. Need this with Emacs...
since I just upgraded my Natty to the new Kernel my Logitech USB mouse won't work anymore. I checked it on another notebook and the mouse works fine Before the upgrade, everything was fine as well.

I've just upgraded my Ubuntu version a week ago and got a problem that the Unity UI won't running after upgrade. My laptop is Dell Inspiron 14R which is i think is more than capable for running Unity 3D. When I rebooted after upgrade there was just a blank wallpaper screen, without Unity interface at all.

I am pretty sure this is an X issue and not a driver issue because if I log out the trackpad works again. This is also sporadic. Sometimes it occurs, sometimes it does not. Is there some configuration I need to set to fix this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Brother MFC-6490CW network Scanner. Had it installed and working great in Gutsy. Upgraded to Natty 11.04 the other day, and the scanner stopped working. Printing is still ok. When I try to open a scanning program I get:
"No Devices Found"
I tried reinstalling the drivers, no luck.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI started playing with Natty Narwhal (11.04) last week. I have a Toshiba Portege R700 laptop with 4GB of memory. Firstly, let me say that when I run 11.04 on the bare metal laptop (installed via WUBI) it appears to work flawlessly. That is, both the ethernet (hard wired) network and the wifi network work just fine.The networking problem occurs when I try to run 11.04 as a (Type 2) VM in VMWare workstation with an underlying o/s of Windows 7 Enterprise.
In this mode, the ethernet network works fine but the wireless network does not work. The o/s does not even see the wireless card. I have downloaded and installed about 216 MB of updates from the update center to no avail. I have "bridged" the VMWare "virtual switch" across to both the ethernet port and the wireless port (see below):Basically, it appears that the interface is not being presented to the VM.Also, of interest, Unity which works fine on the bare metal install does not run on the Ubuntu 11.04 VM.
I am having problems with Natty AMD64 (Ubuntu 11.04) and LIRC/IR-Keytables.
I have a Hauppauge WinTV card (Bt87 (TV card and IR receiver/transmitter) that worked (for the first time) automatically with 10.10 and LIRC. I recently moved over to 11.04, copied my LIRC config files over (hardware.conf, lircd.conf, lircmd.conf, etc), and received the error couldn't find any node at /sys/class/rc/rc*
The modules I had previously been successful with were: lirc_dev & lirc_i2c, as is apropriate for my speific card.
I then learned that Natty incorporated a lot of RC elements in to the kernel, and tried following:[url]
Which suggested removing lirc. At this point, ir-keytable also gives the same error about no node at /sys/class/rc/rc*
I think that I am having a problem with the correct driver being loaded for my card. When I look at a dmesg, the relevant section is: (note: I'm not sure if this dmesg was from before or after I uninstalled LIRC and just tried keytables)

Alright, I'm new to linux, I've googled for days, but I can't for the life of me get my internal mic working. It doesn't register sound in the sound preferences menu, it is not muted.
I have the x120e with the E-350. New install of Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI can open Update Manager fine and it runs though it's little gambit of "Building data structures" etc...
Up at the top it says "The package information was last updated 13 hours ago."
Before I updated to Natty I used to be able to just click on the "Check" button and it would prompt me for my password and then check for updates.
Now if I click the "Check" button it goes grey for a bit, never asks me for my password and then just comes back up with the same "The package information was last updated 13 hours ago." message.
However, if I actually load up the terminal and type out "sudo apt-get update" then go back and load the Update Manager again it will say "The package information was last updated less than one hour ago." which is what should be happening when I click the "Check" button.
I've tried deleting my lists but this didn't resolve the issue. Any clue what else could be happening here?
I also noticed that I had some updates available when I loaded Synaptic Package Manager that didn't show up when i loaded the Update Manager.
I've also tried re-installing update-manager. I've gone as far as to do a complete removal and installed it again. Still not working right.
I think it has something to do with the fact that it's not prompting me for my password like it used to...
I read that Natty will use Unity as the preferred desktop environment, together with Compiz. I found that on my system Compiz - while very neat - will cause instability so I'd rather not use it. How would the desktop stack look for a user not wanting to run Compiz under Natty? Can I use Mutter with Unity? Or maybe I should replace Unity with Gnome? Will my Ubuntu like this (replacing Unity with Gnome)? Will Ubuntu make it easy for users to dump Compiz if they want to do so?
