Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get Java Plugin Working On Natty?

May 17, 2011

I am just trying out Natty for the first time. I'm having trouble installing sun-java. The iced-tea plugin which comes with firefox just doesn't cut it for pogo card games.I seemed to have installed it correctly because when I check my Software Manager there is a green check on all of the sun java6 stuff. But when I go to tools/addons/plugins the only thing there is the icedtea (no sun java6 plugin). I may have to go back to using linux mint.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Java Plugin Working On 11.04

May 17, 2011

I am trying to get the java plugin extension for firefox so that I can run some java applications. I've modified the repositories, run sudo-apt-update, and run apt-get install java6-plugin (among other things). I thought this was successful because when I go to synaptic package manager the sun-java6 things are marked as installed. But when I open up firefox and look at my extensions, there is no java6 plugin!

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get Java Plugin Functioning In Firefox 3.6.3

Apr 13, 2010

I've had a recent run of ubuntu snafus lately, most of which come back to accidentally getting firefox 3.6.4 (namaroka) installed. I've since rolled back and gotten flash working properly again, but Zotero isn't working. I figured out it was because java was being screwy and have been trying to repair it. I followed the instructions here first: [URL] and installed version 6 update 19. It came up as an add-on in firefox but didn't do anything. When I pull up a page with java on it the page just says it is disabled and I can click to install it. However, I then get was getting a box saying: "E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages." I have since removed update 19, done a complete removal in synaptic, and reinstalled JRE and the plugin by going to a page in firefox and clicking the install button. Now it still isn't under my extensions list in firefox, it says it's disabled on pages with java, and when I click to install it says I already have it. I'm running Karmic koala by the way.

Slackware :: Installing Java Error - When Trying To Run A Java App With The Firefox Plugin - Browser Crashe

May 29, 2011

Code: ~ $ /usr/java/jre1.6.0_25/bin/java -showversion Error occurred during initialization of VMjava/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object

That's the error I get. When trying to run a java app with the firefox plugin, the browser simply crashes if it's the 64bit java or tells me it's not installed if it's the 32bit version.

I'm at a loss as to what to do. I think it has something to do with leftover gunk from a previous version I misinstalled(Is that even a word?) Anyway, the only thing that google could come up with was a solution for windows which laid blame on Bill Gates for having a bunch of pf (java prefetch) files stuffed into c:windows for no apparent reason. The solution was to delete them, but I can't seem to find the java prefetch folder in linux. The method I used is downloading the rpm from java.com the rpm2tgz then installpkg then cp libnpjp2.so to firefox plugins folder.

Fedora Installation :: Java Sun - No New Plugin After Firefox Restart

Sep 21, 2009

I 'am trying to install Java on fedora but I 'am stuck a this line on this tutorial [URL]. Use spacebar to read the agreement. At the end type yes to proceed with the installation. To make Firefox use the installed plugin type:
su -c 'yum remove java-*-openjdk-plugin'
su -c 'ln -s /opt/jre1.6.0_14/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so'

Restart Firefox and Tools -> Addons -> Plugins. If the plugin was successfully installed you should see Java(TM) Plug-in among the plugins. Now, if you also want to run java programs using Sun's java type in a console:

My shell
[root@shadow ~]# ln -s /opt/jrel.6.0_16/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
> /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
You have mail in /var/spool/mail/root
[root@shadow ~]# ln -s /opt/jrel.6.0_16/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
ln: creating symbolic link `/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so': File exists
After restart Firefox i don't see any new plugin. ?

Ubuntu :: Firefox 4 - Natty - Adobe PDF Plugin

Jun 18, 2011

I am having problems with the Adobe PDF plugin to load and display PDFs within the browser.

This is a plain Natty-installation with Firefox 4. Adobe Reader 9 is installed with the deb package from the adobe - homepage.

The PDF seems to load when the file is actually stored on a webserver. But when the PDF is kind of dynamically generated, the file is not opened by the plugin but a file-save/open dialog appears.

Can reproduce this behaviour? To test, for example, to

[url]

If you click the PDF button unter "cached", the PDF is not loaded within the browser on my system.

If you however click, for example the second link under "Downloads" everything works as should.

Things I tried that failed:
- completely removing Adobe Reader 9 and the plugin and try to use Reader 8 + plugin instead
- using Mozplugger/evince instead of the Adobe Reader 9 plugin

In all cases, the PDF under "cached" is not loaded within the browser.

As comparision, for example in Windows 7 using Adobe Reader X, everything works as should.

I am not sure which one is the culprit here, my suspicion is Firefox 4...

Do you know of existing bugreports either in launchpad, firefox bugzilla etc?

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty - Workspace Switcher Not Working

Apr 30, 2011

I just upgraded to Natty, from Maverick and I can't get 'Workspace-Switcher' to work. As a matter-of-fact, I was completely dumbfounded when Natty launched for the first time, and I was presented with 'no' menus. What I got instead was some black-screen with some very attractive icons on it; but the icons had no organization to them that I could comprehend, and the categories that were presented didn't make any sense, based on the applications that I had installed. Apparently the designers of Unity thought that it would be a good idea for me to go 'fish' for my applications. Also, the most frequently used applications that I had pinned to gnome-panel disappeared, and I couldn't even rebuild them. The 3D menu, on the left, that combined my desktop icons, with the icons that were 'formerly' pinned to gnome-panel was also very attractive; but provided me with no useful functionality, other than complete disorientation and confusion. The scrolling was also slower than poo. All-in-all a very beautiful 'boat-anchor.' This distro should probably be renamed 'Virtual-Vista.' Fortunately, when I reenabled 'Desktop-Cube' and 'Rotate-Cube' and I think some other options related to Gnome, I got my menus and icons back. What a relief!!! I'm a power-user, and I have something on the order of 100 applications loaded. I just 'can't' go looking all-over-creation to find them...

Unfortunately, Workspace-Switcher could not be activated by clicking on it, only by <ctrl-alt-left/right arrow keys>. Also, unfortunately, all the desktops displayed the same applications. Definitetly 'not' a ready for prime-time player. I assume that this is a bug? Is there a work-around for this? If so, can someone please share it with me? For now I'm stuck with a ruptured-duck that can't swim. I usually have all four desktops populated, and switch between them whenever I have to wait on an application that's busy, or I get tired. I really 'need' this functionality.

P.S., It's more than Ok with me that a distro not be released, if it's not ready. I'd certainly prefer that to 'shock-and-awe.'

Ubuntu :: Natty And Compiz Blur Plugin Doesn't Work

May 2, 2011

I did a clean install and mounted my user folders/partitions back after removing everything else from the Home drive to ensure no incompatible leftovers from Maverick. Now, I am dissapointed to see that I can't get blur on my transparent windows. This worked like a charm in Maverick and it looked brilliant but now it's often hard to tell windows apart if there are windows below the active one. So I had to turn down transparency... I have D-bus enabled, proprietary drivers installed and I have been Google-searching like crazy to find a solution. None.. Do any of you know the status of this plugin in Natty? Should it work, does it? Or not?I have Focus blur activated and working, it helps but not enough. My videocard is Radeon HD 4650 (AGP).

Ubuntu Installation :: Sun-java6-plugin Displayed In Firefox 3.6.10 But Not Working

Initially when I upgraded to Lucid I uninstalled openJDK and switched back to sun-java5 packages due to some application support limitations. Now I have to upgrade to sun-java6- packages. I removed the sun-java5 packages and installed the sun-java6 packages. Including the sun-java6-plugin.

I can see the plugin in aboutlugins in Firefox 3.6.10 however nothing (like webex or applets) related to java works. As a workaround I have used the Icedtea plugin which comes with open JDK and that seems to work. However I want to get the sun-java6-plugin working.

Ubuntu :: Firefox And Java Plugin ?

Aug 27, 2010

I opened Firefox, and tried to use an Internet speed tester that requires Java. I've always used this with no problems. Today, I'm having problems with it. It told me to check that my Java plugin was enabled, or whatnot. I looked at Tools > Add-Ons > Plugins, and found that Java is gone....

What's up with that? I'm using the latest version of Firefox (version 3.6.8 / Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu cononical - 1.0) on Ubuntu 9.10.

I checked with Synaptic Package Manager, and I found sun-java6-jre, and all of it's related packages, openjdk-6jre-* packages, etc. were installed (over ten packages with 'java' or 'jre' and '6' in the package names).

So, I don't understand why Tools > Add-Ons > Plugins doesn't show my java plugin anymore. I also checked about: plugins (had to put a space between the colon and 'plugins' because a smiley shows up aboutlugins), but there was nothing in there about java either.

What's going on? Has Ubuntu decided it doesn't want to use Java (I remember reading something about Oracle changing the license for Sun Java somewhere)? Or is this a fluke?

Either way. Synaptic Package Manager says Java is installed... So, what else do I need to do to fix this? I read other posts about Firefox and Java, but they were about installing java, and the like, and I have Java installed....

Ubuntu :: Get Java Plugin Onto Firefox ?

Dec 26, 2010

At first, I enabled the partner source and installed "sun-java6-plugin", as that was listed in an earlier Ubuntu install's package list. But Firefox does not see this plugin (even after a reboot). So I removed that package and its friends, and installed "icedtea6-plugin" as found on [url], but this does not work, either. This is with Ubuntu 10.10 for i386 on an ASUS Eee PC 900.

How to get a Java plugin working? I know I've had it working before without having to do anything like this. But that could have been an earlier version of Firefox. Could Firefox now be broken? Or could they have blocked Java, now?
