Upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 which trashed my useful desktop.
Synapticed gnome and changed login preferences to ubuntu classic which basically fixed the desktop except...
If I open a program, say LibreOffice or firefox it opens correctly.
If I move the window to the second screen, it switches to fullscreen mode.
If I click on the resize button, then it opens correctly, but on the first screen
How do I move the Window control buttons when the window is in full screen mode? I.e.: I know how to go into gconf-editor:

gconf-editor --> apps --> metacity --> general --> button layout = ":minimize,maximize,close"
(I've intentionally disabled the menu...)
What I want is my window controls to be on the right side of the window when the window is in full screen mode.
Also I've had an issue with the Unity dockbar glitching out. I can still click on the buttons (i.e. the logout button) but it displays like a nintendo game inserted crooked. Is there a way to 'restart' unity without log out/ log in?
Any one else experienced any glitches with unity auto hiding/showing?

I run 2 monitors, 1800x1200 and 1720x1180 approx (not exactly sure, but they are different)
I like to have many windows open on both screens.
The system keeps switching windows to fullscreen mode when I want to be able to see 5 or 6 partial windows on each screen.
It seems that if I align the edge of a window to the top of the screen, it switches to fullscreen mode, which is the last thing I want it to do.
Funnily enough, if I move a window to the edge of the screen, I want to be able to see the other windows on that screen. If I want fullscreen mode I hit the fullscreen icon; otherwise I want the size to stay the same. I dont want the window manager ever to arbitrarily give me fullscreen mode.
How can I stop this unwanted behaviour which is new to 11.04 ?
I have to admit that for my purposes the classic desktop is head and shoulders better than the default 11.04 desktop, but how did the release process manage to trash the earlier release's excellent desktop. Was Beta feedback totally ignored ? Rhetorical question, but hopefully someone up there listens.

Before, I could move windows between screens by pressen "Strg-Alt-Enter" (a shortcut I configured myself). Now that does not work anymore.
I remember configuring this shortcut somewhere in ccsm, but now I can not find it anymore.
i just installed openSuse and i have very little experience with linux OS. I used this guide to setup my two monitors and they are both running ok but i have the following problem:My mouse pointer can go to the second monitor without a problem, but i can't move a window there. When i move the window to the edge of the screen it just resizes it. it doesn't move it to the next screen.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI purchased a foot pedal [URL], which I want to use as a substitute for the ALT, CTRL and SHIFT key (Mainly in my texteditor, Emacs, where these modifiers are used a lot for commands). So instead of pressing ALT+x I want to press the left pedal + x. However, instead of going into the command mode it just types x to the screen. If I keep the pedal pressed, and type another x, it switches into command mode, like it should have done right away. The device seems to use HID, and lsusb gives:

I want to allow my program to be able to run in DEBUG mode. i.e., I want to be able to run ./program, and I want to be able to run ./program -v to show all the debug output. How do I go about setting up something like that?

It even covers up the application bar on the left. As far as I can see, this issue only occurs with firefox. Other apps are not affected.

Whenever I play a video via vlc or kaffeine and I switch to full screen I get lag. If I move my mouse to show the controls it plays perfectly. How can I fix my full screen playback issues?

View 2 Replies View Relatedi just upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10, and now i can't view any flash video in fullscreen mode (videos, atdhe, etc.). when i click on fullscreen firefox crashes instantly. everything was working fine in 9.10.
i looked around on the forums; i tried to install the flash-aid extension for firefox. it says that my architecture is 32bit, then reinstalls the flash plugin, but that doesn't help; fullscreen still crashes. i also tried to install the 64bit version from adobe's website, but that doesn't help.
i had a look at the mozilla website [url] i tried to preload the libgl.so.1 library as suggested there, but that doesn't help. i wanted to try to disable hardware acceleration in the flash player settings, but i can't even change the settings; when i right-click on settings, the adobe small preferences screen appears but i can't click on anything, nothing works.
that's all on ubuntu 10.04 with firefox 3.6.3 and flash player 10,0,45,2. i also installed the newer 10.1 flashplayer plugin from the adobe website, but firefox still crashes.
Hey I'm looking for something to grab a section of the screen ... like to allow me to drag a rectangle around a portion of the screen and when I release, capture only that -- in to the clipboard would be fine or at that point to a image file format which I could save on the file system.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just installed 10.04 x86 for my mom and while she is using it (tyrannically just browsing facebook/email/flash games) the screen randomly goes blank then back to normal again. This symptom generally worsens after a few minutes until it is unusable. Specs are as follows:
Athlon X2 5200+
3GB RAM
ATi 2400pro 256MB (using the standard out of the box drivers)
Also running compiz and emerald so that I was able to make the desktop look like OS X.
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop. At work, we are beginning to tinker with running Ubuntu on our student systems (school district). The thing is, Unity and Gnome Shell are new enough that they are not considered right now as viable options to test in. That said, an alternative was needed that was quick on older systems yet very configurable. XFCE. So I installed XFCE on my Ubuntu machine. This way I can tinker with the interface as if I was a student but then I can bounce back to Unity which I do prefer for personal use. The thing is, the login screen switches over to XFCE's. Is there a way to get my regular Ubuntu login screen back?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a weird problem in my Aspire One D150 with an Intel 945 GME, and in my HP DV5 with an Intel GM45. When i put a window like Firefox in full screen mode (F11), and try to get into a menu, or an auto-complete option or trying to access a URL in the history of the address bar, results in a black blink that its very annoying, because it happens all the time.
This problem appears in the most GTK Apps that i run in full screen mode. QT Works perfect. If the composite its off, works perfect in both.
This happens in KDE 4.3.5 and KDE 4.4.1, so I have no clue about this. I want my composite on, and make that the GTK Apps work as well as the QT ones.
1. I can run the graphical installer at full resolution without using "nomodeset"
2. I can boot into the Gnome desktop using the option "Try without installing" without any problems
3. When I install to my HDD however, I can boot but just at the point where the logon screen should come(after the black screen,blinking cursor), the display reports no signal and goes to sleep. I can hit enter, type my password, hit enter again (blind, as there's no display) and the HDD spins up as if logging in, but I don't see anything.
4. Using "nomodeset" makes no difference whatsoever other than the graphical installer runs at a lower res.
5. using the alternate installer changes nothing
6. recovery mode has the same issues
It appears to me that booting into Gnome without installing uses some sort of generic driver, whereas installing uses a different driver which is sending my display to sleep. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64Bit. Have also tried using 10.04 64Bit and the alternate 10.10 .iso, but to no avail. My graphics card is an NVidia Quadro NVS 295 with a DisplayPort-DVI adapter. I've previously installed 10.04 64Bit on another system with an NVidia GT240 card with no problems whatsoever. I can't try that card in this machine as it's too big for the case chassis, let alone the case.
I have the following system using an ATI graphics card, SATA Drives and want to install Fedora 12 as a dual boot option with Windows XP.
Using an install DVD it seems that Fedora installs then at a point during the copying of packages the screen goes blank actually switches off. The DVD Drive and Hard drive still work , my guess is completeing the install. On reboot I do not get the option to boot to linux.
I have 2 SATA 3Gbs Hard Drives formatted for windows NTfs. One has 2 partitions and some free space, the other is formatted NTFS and is my data disk.
I would like to be able to access the data disk with both Windows and Linux and install Linux system in the free space.
Having read a few of the guides available, none of them seem to mention this problem, although I am aware of the Ati support problem. I am hoping I do not have to replace my graphics card with a nVidia one.
When i some times start up the system the screen switches to a lower resolution.Then when i restart my system and it switches to 1152x864.What can be causing this problem and how do we root out this ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI cannot install Ubuntu 10.04, or even boot into the live CD. I'm not an expert, but I've used Ubuntu for several years, and I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything stupid... Here's what happens when I boot with the Ubuntu 10.04 live CD: I get a purple screen with just an accessibility(?) symbol at the bottom (this lasts 15 seconds). The screen goes black, with a flashing cursor, then changes back to purple, this time with an Ubuntu logo, with 5 dots acting as a progress indicator (this lasts about 1 minute). The screen switches to standby. The CD drive continues to make noises for another minute or so, then stops.
I physically removed my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 5770), and plugged the monitor straight into the VGA port on the motherboard. Now the CD boots up fine. I could try installing Ubuntu at this point, while my graphics card is unplugged, and then plug my graphics card back in, and see if it starts working then.
i was watching some videos on videos in fullscreen and after being idle the screen turns off. is there a setting to change this or do i have to disable putting the display to sleep in the power manager?----- edit -----i forgot to mention that i am using ubuntu classic. also, i disabled putting the display to sleep in the gnome power manager, but the screen still shuts off if the system is idle. guessing that the gnome power manager isn't actually in control.
