Ubuntu :: Change Volume Or Brightness From The Keyboard, As Soon As The Indicator Goes Down, Mouse Automatically Switches To Drag Mode
Jan 31, 2011
I have a problem with Maverick. Whenever I change my volume or brightness from the keyboard, as soon as the indicator goes down, my mouse automatically switches to drag mode. I have to switch to open terminal by keyboard shortcuts and reboot
when i change my volume via the buttons on my keyboard, my left click on my mouse just stops working, then i have to restart my computer to get it to work again. anyone now a fix or a workaround for this?
Well, just as the title of this post says, I am having keyboard and mouse problems. Here's the storyMy friend Cody wanted me to take a look at his computer for him (I'm sort of known as a Linux nerd in my school lol) because his keyboard and mouse do not at all work in init 4 mode. I've tried reconfiguring the keyboard and mouse by trying a different module. I've even tried reconfiguring X alltogether by running "X -configure", which didn't work
I've run in to one problem which makes me go back to Windows 7,and that's not being able to change my extra mouse buttons to function as volume up and down. I watch a lot of movies and series on my PC, and I use my wireless mouse to control volume and to pause and play. The last 2 are no problem, but I can't seem to find an option to change the function of the extra mouse buttons.I've looked all over the net, and read various forums, they don't have a clear answer or even an idea how to accomplish this. So I turned to this forum, which I should have done in the first place.
I'd been trying to get into Linux before I bought it so I figured that I would try to get it onto my new Mac so that I could use it wherever I am. I decided to try Debian Lenny 5.0.3 a whirl after reading about all the different distros available. I've successfully installed it and I can get to it with rEFIt, and I have quite a few things working such as the video drivers and wifi. However, I've had trouble getting it to a level where it'd be usable away from home. Here are the main problems I'm worried about:
1) I installed pommed but I still can't use the brightness keys to change the screen brightness. I'm not sure if there's some other workaround for this?
2) I tried some recommended power management packages (gnome-power-manager) but it doesn't seem to be accessible or functional right now. I don't have any way to control it or get to it that is obvious to me. Is an icon or anything supposed to appear on the task bar when you install or what? Getting some sort of power management on here is important because it gets really lousy battery life otherwise.
3) Being a Macbook, there's no right-click button. Multitouch would be really nice (two-finger scrolling!) but I'd be OK with ANY way to right-click with the touchpad. I have a wireless USB keyboard/mouse combo that works at home at least . . . right out of the box too!
4) I've seen some packages called the Mactel PPA, but they are made for Ubuntu. Since Debian and Ubuntu are so similar, is there any way to make those work on Lenny? I think that if I got those to work, I could fix some of the problems above. Or do I have to install Ubuntu?
5) I just noticed that the sound doesn't seem to work yet either.
I have installed VMWare server 2 on a windows XP host. Then I installed Suse 11.2 on the VMWare server. For the most part everything seems to be working Ok. However, the key board will type two letters with every keystroke. I have used the the accessibility options to force a hack fix (slow keys). Also, the host pointer looses synchronization with the guest. Simple fix, running it off the screen forces VM to synchronize.
I have managed to find work around solutions, but overall it is annoying and effects my productivity (IE Ctrl+C takes about 2 seconds to register!!!). I would like to find better solutions. So I am looking for advice on how I could address these issues, I need advice on two methods:
1) Assuming the problems are within Linux, I will need to tweak/change the drivers for my mouse and keyboard, how would I do that?
2) Assuming the problem is with VMWare Tools, I will need to tweak/update the tools. Now, I have noticed that Suse has their own custom setup for the tools. Thus the documentation for tweaking the tools doesn't apply (ie cannot find vmware-tools-config.pl). So how would I go about playing with that side of things?
3) Ruled out the problem being with VMWare itself. Whenever I run the system in command line mode, or in the graphical installer, the keyboard works fine. It is only within KDE that the problems arise. Thus it is either X-Windows/KDE or the VMWare tools layer that is causing the problem. So my next question, is there a way of turning components off and on to narrow in on what component is causing the problem?
I purchased a foot pedal [URL], which I want to use as a substitute for the ALT, CTRL and SHIFT key (Mainly in my texteditor, Emacs, where these modifiers are used a lot for commands). So instead of pressing ALT+x I want to press the left pedal + x. However, instead of going into the command mode it just types x to the screen. If I keep the pedal pressed, and type another x, it switches into command mode, like it should have done right away. The device seems to use HID, and lsusb gives: Bus 005 Device 004: ID 1130:660c Tenx Technology, Inc. Is there a way, how I can change the behaviour of the device?
I want to allow my program to be able to run in DEBUG mode. i.e., I want to be able to run ./program, and I want to be able to run ./program -v to show all the debug output. How do I go about setting up something like that?
I upgraded to Maverick things generally went well - but I noticed TWO sound controls and removed one - later after a reboot I no longer have any. It will appear once I click on System/Preferences/Sound, but otherwise it doesn't show up on the desktop bar. I checked under the Add to Panel feature but no luck - any ideas how to get it back?
When I leave my computer and later return, depending on how long I've been away, I find the screen-saver running, the screen turned off, or the computer suspended, i get the error as specified below on a black screen:
Quote:
Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode.
Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.
The message gives several options. Despite some experimentals, The only solution which I have found is to reboot and everything becomes fine as before.
can nautilus be set up in a way, that it has the same right-click drag & drop behaviour like windows ? i mean, i want to drag & drop using the right mouse button, and then i want a pop-up menue like the one i get using the left mouse button and ALT.
I Install Ubuntu 9.10 and I can't control Brightness, show brightness popup (Fn+F5F6) but screen brightness don't work, I install NVIDIA Driver Linux-x86_64 version 190.53, modiffed xorg.conf.
I use czech QWERTZ keyboard layout, but sometimes it accidentaly switches to (probably) english or US qwerty, so I am unable to write our national characters (which share the keys with numbers on laptop), it writes Y instead of Z etc.
So I am unable to write normal text. I looked in keyboard settings, but it seems to be ok:
layout is "Ĩesko with <|> key" - HP Pavilion ZT11xx - this seems to be OK and it worked without problems before this accidental switch.
there is no other layout than the mentioned one and in Layout settings (hope this is correct as I have this in Czech) I unchecked all boxes in Layout switching.
I absolutely have no idea where is the problem. Maybe it is some keybinding but did not find anything which could do this.
I use Debian Lenny with added a11y apps like Orca etc. called Vinux. I tried to ask there, but currently wihout success.
Is there any USB mouse battery indicators for Ubuntu that can tell me the battery level of my Logitech USB mouse? (something like a laptop battery one) I want to add it the panel.
Alright, at first, the volume control went missing from the indicator applet, but then re-adding it to the panel didn't do anything but add a mail/chat applet. So I tried to reset the indicator applet settings with this code...
And now all that happens when I add the indicator applet to the panel is that the text: "No indicators" pops up where the mail/chat applet was before. Is there a way to get the volume applet back into the panel?
I was wondering if there is some ind of way of removing the rhythmbox link in the volume menu in the indicator applet..It's just that I hardly use it and it's pretty annoying and redundant as well having it there. I don't want to get rid of the volume menu completely nor of rhythmbox. I just want the link gone from there. Actually it never was there until I decided to open it once. After that day, it wouldn't go, no matter how I would exit the program. I didn't have this problem in 10.04. It's just in 10.10.
(note: using apt-get not aptitude). The only effect this had was to remove the volume indicator/menu from unity's top panel and didn't fix the sound in skype. So I did
I accidentally removed the keyboard indicator from a panel. How do I get it back? Right-clicking on the panel, then choosing "Add to panel" brings up a list of applets that can be added to the panel. The keyboard indicator is not among them. I have two keyboard layouts added in the Keyboard Preferences and need to frequently switch between them. I am using Ubuntu 10.4.
I encountered a problem: after I installed ATI driver on my CentOS 5.4 64biti, I made an reboot like from indication, but after reboot I cannot see my mouse indicator on my desktop. How I can reactivated to see it? I waiting much early an answer, please. I need to use the computer.
I have a recent installation of openSUSE 11.4_64bit with KDE as desktop environment and like in all other linux distros my mouse middle button has a problem when clicked and dragged. The effect that it does when I click in the scroll button and move up and down is the same as when I rotate the button and it does nothing when I move to the side. Usually in programs like google earth (just an example) this is a very useful function as is used to set direction to navigate and angle and then this setting just does zoom when moved up/down and nothing else. It is also very annoying that every time that I click the middle button in a browser it goes back to the previous search in the default browser search engine. I already tried some setting in yast but no difference and forum search didn't retrieved a lot of info.
Hi, I have had a frustrating problem for the past few months where performing a 'left-mouse-button-drag' operation (i.e. holding down on a scroll bar, drawing a line in a graphics application, connecting a wire in Labview) will often fail to acknowledge when the mouse button is released by the user. The OS continues to believe the button is being held down (as far as I can tell). From this point, *sometimes* the mouse button might release if I ctrl+alt+del or right click around the place, but mostly I need to restart openSUSE to fix the issue. This occurs every 10 minutes or so, and after searching for a solution for the past few months, I now write in hope that this is a known issue, and there is a solution. Of course the problem could be with VMWare, but I have also Mandriva, DSL and Puppy Linuz installed, and none show this same problem.
I just configured my keyboard to be US International. Now I get the text 'USA' in the Notification Area. I never seen this before and I want it gone. I can remove the default USA keyboard configuration and then it's gone. But after a reboot it's back again.
I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. The Caps lock indicator on my keyboard is not working (always off). The Num lock indicator works fine. I have the same problem with other keyboards. The other keyboards work with Windows & DOS. This isn't a show-stopper, but I'd like to get it corrected as it's problematic when typing in passwords, etc. that have hidden fields.
This thread helped me to remove the mail icon from the indicator applet:But now I want to remove the ugly keyboard icon and its letters also, leaving just the sound and torrent icons. What should I do?
