Ubuntu :: How To Install Bz2 Files

Aug 22, 2010

I've installed VMware Server and am having trouble logging in and doing "other stuff" once I finally do manage to login. A user at the VMware forum suggests that the current version of Firefox has incompatibilities with VMware ... so

I downloaded a previous version (3.0.9) which was a tar.bz2 file. I have untarred the file into it's own folder and the executable file (firefox) does run the program, but don't I need to "install" this program somewhere? Or am I consigned to navigate the to the file each time I want to use Firefox? Or do I just move the executable to the desktop. It has no regular icon associated with the file and when I double click it a dialog box opens asking if I want to run in terminal, display, cancel, or run the file?

I read the "help" (clicked the little blue ? at the top of the Ubuntu screen) and read the discussion about the file format, but there was no information about installing downloaded tar.bz2 files. Did a Google search and came up with about a million hits, none of the first 50 or so seemed appropriate to the task. Searched the Forum and came up with a lot of "use Synaptic" hits which also don't seem to help much because Synaptic only lists the current version. Stumped!

BTW I have already uninstalled the current version of Firefox using Synaptic so think I'm ready to install the older version.

I noticed in my system that my root partition is getting full. I found a lot of old compacted syslogfiles. I deleted manually all syslog files older than a month. Approx 6GB

Ubuntu :: Wubi Ubuntu Install From Download - Install Files Not Found?

I am trying to install Ubuntu on my Toshiba Satellite 5205-S703 laptop with WinXP Home. The CD/DVD drive no longer works so I have to use the download installer. In fact, I hope to install Ubuntu to help me determine whether the CD/DVD problems are hardware or software related. The computer has no provision to boot from USB either. The download went fine, but as soon as installation started this error message popped up: "An error occured. Could not retrieve the required files. Ubuntu :: Moving Files To A Pendrive Renders 0 Bytes Files And Files Gets Deleted

Jun 10, 2011

I get a SD card. Put in the SD reader. It's empty. I go to my super-important-pictures-to-a-monthly-relatory folder and select all files. Select them for MOVE. Paste them on the SD card. When the move/paste process is finished, i click on the "Eject" button on top of the SD card name. Card's ejected. I can't access the card anymore. I take out the card and put on my other computer. From 300 pictures, there are only 10 available, the remaining ones are there, but with 0bytes and unrecoveable. I panic. I go back to my main computer, my pictures are not there anymore. The pictures were on the Home folder. I panic again. I reset the computer and boot on the LiveCD. I install foremost, scalpel, photorec and about everything till my USB drive complains about being filled up. I run everything and I can't recover my files. I'm in the danger of getting fired. Things like that makes Windows sounds more appealing. When you securely remove a pendrive, things get REALLY pasted there before screwing everything up with a removal.

Once the dependencies have been installed, download the Unix tarball from the download page and run the following commands:
$ tar xf framework-3.X.tar.gz
$ sudo mkdir -p /opt/metasploit3
$ sudo cp -a msf3/ /opt/metasploit3/msf3
$ sudo chown root:root -R /opt/metasploit3/msf3
$ sudo ln -sf /opt/metasploit3/msf3/msf* /usr/local/bin/

When you've completed this step, you should have a working installation and be able to run modules, pivot through compromised systems, and use most of the Metasploit Framework's features. The following optional installation steps will give you extra functionality.

Ubuntu :: Can't Install Downloaded DEB Files?

Aug 2, 2011

Just installed Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit on an older Dell D610 laptop. Everything was running a little slow but all in all running fine except one thing - I downloaded the Chrome deb file and also the deb file from Moneydance. When I double-click on either of these deb files, it opens up the Ubuntu Software Center and shows an 'Install' button for the app. I click Install and then enter my root password, then nothing happens. A short while later the Install button turns from grayed out to clickable again. So I click it again, and it says that the deb file is not packaged correctly.

I've tried it with multiple deb files now and get the same thing. Installing directly through the Ubuntu Software Center works fine, but unortunately Chrome and Moneydance aren't in there (I prefer Chrome to Chromium). What could be causing this?

Also - due to the slowness of the Ubuntu install I did a clean install to Xubuntu and I like that much better and it is running perfectly except for this issue of not being able to install any 3rd-party downloaded apps.

Ubuntu :: Copy Files From A Non Working Install?

Aug 19, 2010

My father in law had a problem with his Ubuntu system. After quite some playing around, we discovered that an update had damaged or removed the graphics driver and the system was stuck in non graphics mode. This thread refers: [URL] Rather than spend much more time trying to figure out how to re-install a graphics driver without a graphical user interface, I decided to cut my losses and re-install Ubuntu. Before I did this though, I had some files to recover. So I burned a Live CD and booted from that.

But my problem is that I can't copy all the files from the home directory of the hard drive. I get a permissions error when I try to copy or view the files. I'm assuming that, as the system does not see I'm the original user, that it won't let me access the files. This must be a fairly common problem, does anyone know how I can recover all the files? I just want to use the live CD to provide a working OS to allow me to copy and paste the files onto an external HD. The Live CD is actually the Lubuntu variant, I wanted a real lightweight OS to use on a live CD. I assumed that wouldn't make a difference. Oh, and of course, if there is a real simple solution to my original problem of a broken graphics card driver, I'd be interested in that too.

Ubuntu :: Delete App Files From Failed Install

So I was installing the latest Blackberry plug-in for Eclipse on my Aspire One with it's massive EIGHT gigabyte SSD, and I ran out of space. The plug-in failed to complete installation, but it kept all of the files on my computer - I went from 2 free gigs to 400 free MB. Eclipse doesn't recognize the plug-in so there is no option to uninstall it. This is just my travel computer, so it's no big deal to reinstall Ubuntu and get all the updates again, but I'd rather not do that.

Ubuntu :: Rcovering Files From Broken Install?

Mar 22, 2011

was attepting a boot loop fix when my ubuntu froze half way through uninstalling gnome, I am unable to boot in any mode from the grub and get errors about failing to load duv or sys or something of the kind, I cannot reach any command line either...Now if I boot in a live cd my hdd is visible but I cannot mount it, no problem mounting a windows drive but the ubuntu one will now I get many errors such as a job is pending and others that are similar, I have tried last night for 5hours (not an exagguration) many solutions to get it mounted.

If I boot the windows hdd the ubuntu drive does not display in my computer and.I have the cable and jumpers set correctly.Basically I cannot view what is on the drive at all, I'm wondering is there anyway to copy the drive to another hdd or usb other than what I have done, or could you suggest something to make one of these methods work?Thanks a lot, I need to get some very important files back from the drive, and from now on I will backup A LOT!

Ubuntu :: Could Not Get Actual CrunchBang Install Files

Apr 10, 2011

I had the problem: "could not download all repository indexes". On Cruncheee (An EEEPC specific Crunchbang distro), which I managed to "fix" by changing the /etc/apt/sources.list file by replacing it with stuff I found in a guide. (Shown at end). Now when I press the Reload button on Synaptic no more errors come up! But when I search for "audacious" (music player) I can only find "crunchbang-audacious-theme", and no actual crunchbang installing things.

What have I actually done to my my sources.list file, did I tell it to look elsewhere for servers with lists of dependencies? Is a "repository" just a place on the internet which has lots of dependencies in it? If I were to just add more and more stuff to my sources.list file and kept pressing "reload" on Synaptic, would I eventually find some packages to install Audacious? What does "sudo apt-get" do? Is that exactly the same as finding something on synaptic and clicking it?

My new sources.list:
## Add comments (##) in front of any line to remove it from being checked.
## Use the following sources.list at your own risk.
deb [URL] dapper main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src [URL] dapper main restricted universe multiverse

Ubuntu Installation :: Failed To Install Key Applications / Files

Jun 14, 2010

I have installed Lucid 10.04 server on an IBM eserver 325 dual boot with 2003. the cd rom drive on the server is starting to go out and the install worked but failed to install key applications and files. For examle- no VIM (just VI) and the apt sources.list file had one entry- the cd rom. I need to update all the packages necessary for the system to operate fully. ( I have tons of broken dependencies when trying to install SSHserver, Samba and other apps) I manually entered the muliverse and universe repositories in sources.list but this is not resolving the issues with the missing dependencies. I can get a new cd-rom drive but it will certainly take a week or two to get and I need to get this project going. I have some experience with Linux, but not enough to know if there is a magic command that I don't know.
