According to gparted I have a few unallocated partition. How do I make use of them? If create a new partition should i use ntfs format or ext3 format? If I use one type, the other OS cannot read the other.

Well what I want to do is to exchange XP with Windows 7 64bit. I read other threads where someone describes that he had a virus on his XP partition and had to re-install XP. In this case the recommendation was to install XP again and then just repair grub.
Is it really just that easy? I am doubting that things will go so smoothly? I checked the bootloader; does it help to note the settings and re-enter them after the installation?
I have a jpeg file on my Windows system that won't delete. However, when I try to boot into safe mode to delete it, I can not get into the menu to select "Safe Mode". F8 just boots me right into Ubuntu.I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer Aspire 5520.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)

I have Ubuntu 10.04 in my laptop and at the same time I have Windows 7 (partitioned disk). I use mostly Ubuntu, but I need windows for some stuff. I want to share files of windows with Ubuntu (is weird but when I installed Ubuntu never gave me the option "share files from windows", I dunno why). Anyway, I can see the disk in Ubuntu, and I can see the folder /Documents and settings/, that creates windows by default with my files. However, the route is too long to arrive there from Ubuntu using the Terminal.
I created a shadow link using lndir to arrive to my files easier. It works fine, however, sometimes when I go to the files using this route, these are lightened in red, and when I try to enter to one of these folders, the system doesn't recognize it. After a while, these are in blue and I can go in them. Why it is happening?. What I did Is the "correct" way to do it?.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy HP Netbook crashed. The Windows XP system files corrupted and Windows absolutely will not run. I planned on using Ubuntu to recover it, and then install Ubuntu permanently to save it in the future. Before you ask, every other utility has failed on me. UBCD included, which did nothing but provide me with errors upon errors just trying to run it.
The netbook has no CD drive.The only internet around is a wireless signal... my netbook has a broadcom wireless card that is never recognized. I'm using someone elses working laptop to connect online and get things I need, make boot devices, research for help, etc.This laptop has barely any hard drive space. Currently it has 1 gb remaining for doing anything.I have three flash memory devices:2 gb SD card. My netbook refuses to recognize it as a boot device.2 gb flash stick (that's actually an mp3 player). My netbook refuses to recognize it as a boot device.512 mb flash stick. This DOES work as a boot device.
So far my 512 mb flash stick has run Damn Small Linux and Ubuntu Minimal on my netbook. Of course, both are useless because the netbook cannot access internet, nor does either OS recognize my wireless card. This flash stick is, obviously, too small for a regular Ubuntu installation or any other Linux distribution that can help (as far as I know).
So, in order for this to work, I have to be able to do one of the following:
Install Ubuntu from a different OS, like Damn Small Linux or something small enough to boot on my 512 mb stick. Ubuntu can be put on one of the other, larger devices, maybe to be accessed for installation. No idea how to do this, let alone safely.
Install Ubuntu Minimal OFFLINE. This question was asked multiple times on these forums and none were answered. Is there a way to run minimal, and use offline sources for the install?
Get the normal Ubuntu installer under 500 mb. Its overwhelmingly frustrating that I'm just barely unable to do this. I've read of Ubuntu Customization Kit, which ended up being lots of useless files and reams of gobbldegook. I've heard Ubuntu is packed with additional, nonrequisite software which makes it so large. Why can't there be a halfway version between normal and minimal?? Not everyone has internet and not everyone has a CD drive or large USB stick! Is there a way this can be accomplished? Does this version exist?
I have limited time and resources. Before you ask, no, I cannot afford a larger USB stick. I'm pinching pennies right now and there's nowhere near here that sells them anyway.

I am running some Pcap files through editcap and then tshark. I am running fedora 11. This will create a couple of thousand text files all numbered sequentially 1-x. How can I copy these files across a network(I connect using putty) or how can I copy them onto an external HD so that when I view them on the windows machine they have the right formatting (Windows know to open them with wordpad/notepad) basically that windows knows that they are text?

I cannot install additional software or services on the Windows XP machine. I can install any software on the Linux machine. I've tried scp, but the connection failed and if my understanding is correct it is because scp requires that the target (windows machine) be running an ssh service. View 1 Replies View RelatedI use Ubuntu 9.04 exclusively on my own machines, but I have a couple of flash drives that got infected by some corrupt windows executable (*.exe) files, probably by somebody's trojan (they are Cruzer 4GB so came with installed fancy programs that I dont need but didnt remove and Windows keeps installing unwanted ini files and other trash every time I use them in somebody elses machine or in an internet cafe). I deleted quite a few files, but some are stubborn.
$ sudo chmod +w-X doesnt seem to work. How do I unprotect and remove them? The filesystem is vFAT.
I suspect the files were created by some kind of a trojan as my work requires my flash to be pretty promiscuous.
When I 've backed up all the good files I need, I'd be happy to reformat the flash drives as straight vanilla data storage and retrieval, provided I can still use them on a variety of machines running MS windows as well as on my Linux machines. Any guidance on reformatting?

I don't use Windows that often but thought since I have a copy of Win7 I might upgrade from the XP I'm currently using. I'm anticipating several issues, first Grub, can I get it going again after the Win7 upgrade without messing with my current Ubuntu install? the next issue is Win7 will want to make a "boot" partition, does this create any problem with partition names for Ubuntu? can this be solved by making the windows "primary" partition and using an extended partition inside that? is there anything I'm missing?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had Ubuntu/Windows 7 dual boot. I decided not to use Windows anymore, so I deleted it's partition (using Gparted) and formatted it to ext4. Then I did update of grub.Here are few issues I am having now:
1. The new partition won't automount
2. I can not use new partition. It has only one directory - lost and found. I can't copy data there.
3. Grub still has Windows 7 option (it doesn't work of course)
4. Grub fails to boot (it says it didn't find /windows partition), so I have to always skip that manually

I have purchased a DLink Sharecenter Pulse NAS as my PC failed. I wanted to put the two SATA drives in and extract the data before formatting to use as JBOD or RAID. However, before I managed to access my data, the setup software started formatting the drives. I switched it off immediately.
Purchased a SATA to USB2 lead and connected to my work laptop but I cannot see the drive(s). Used Partition Magic and each drive has 3 partitions - of which show about 74GB as used and 2 x 512MB as not. Looks like the drives have been partly set for Linux but the format was not comlete. Have tried to use explore2fs to read them but I cannot access the 74 GB partition only one of the 512MB partitions.
I'm a bit stuck now - any one got any ideas how I can get my files off the 74GB partition before I put them back in the NAS to format.

I have read that i could just format linux partition and than boot with windows cd and fix motherboard, but i do not have windows cd on me. Can i use another tool, that would allow me to fix the "damage" grub did? Acronis or something like that?

I need to upgrade Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional (Thats Winblows for ya.). View 7 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora. I decided to duel boot and made sure to have it not touch my windows partition and install the bootloader. Now I can only boot into fedora which is lovely, but my windows is gone. Now I successfully mounted the ntfs partition windows was in, and the windows partition's fine and even the windows folder's still there but when I boot I only get the option for Fedora. Anyone knows how to fix it?
