I have dual boot ubuntu 10.10 and Windows XP and Accidently, Some files in XP system drive files got deleted and now canot boot into Win XP,These are the files left and nothing happend to folder....

I use Ubuntu 9.04 exclusively on my own machines, but I have a couple of flash drives that got infected by some corrupt windows executable (*.exe) files, probably by somebody's trojan (they are Cruzer 4GB so came with installed fancy programs that I dont need but didnt remove and Windows keeps installing unwanted ini files and other trash every time I use them in somebody elses machine or in an internet cafe). I deleted quite a few files, but some are stubborn.
$ sudo chmod +w-X doesnt seem to work. How do I unprotect and remove them? The filesystem is vFAT.
I suspect the files were created by some kind of a trojan as my work requires my flash to be pretty promiscuous.
When I 've backed up all the good files I need, I'd be happy to reformat the flash drives as straight vanilla data storage and retrieval, provided I can still use them on a variety of machines running MS windows as well as on my Linux machines. Any guidance on reformatting?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have purchased a DLink Sharecenter Pulse NAS as my PC failed. I wanted to put the two SATA drives in and extract the data before formatting to use as JBOD or RAID. However, before I managed to access my data, the setup software started formatting the drives. I switched it off immediately.
Purchased a SATA to USB2 lead and connected to my work laptop but I cannot see the drive(s). Used Partition Magic and each drive has 3 partitions - of which show about 74GB as used and 2 x 512MB as not. Looks like the drives have been partly set for Linux but the format was not comlete. Have tried to use explore2fs to read them but I cannot access the 74 GB partition only one of the 512MB partitions.
I'm a bit stuck now - any one got any ideas how I can get my files off the 74GB partition before I put them back in the NAS to format.
If I am logged in as root in a linux system and I run command rm -rf on / folder, should it remove all the files? also the kernel?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using FC11 and have an external USB drive attached which was originally formatted and used with OS X. I'm pretty sure it's an HFS+ filesystem, but fdisk-l simply reports "unknown". I moved a ton of files to it from an older OS X drive, including a bunch of backups that were done with Time Machine in OS X.
Now I've moved them all back to where I want them (onto an EXT2 formatted drive) and I'm trying to clear those Time Machine files off the HFS+. The drive will ultimately be used with a Mac, so I don't want to wipe the whole disk (aside from the fact I have a ton of other stuff on there that I don't want to move).
The problem is that I cannot get FC11 to delete the Time Machine files. When I try to delete the top level folder ('rm -rf topfolder'), the command looks like it's running (and goes load crazy on the CPU), but I left it running all night, then cancelled it this morning, no files were deleted. It just sits there. When I try to delete folders a little lower in the tree using 'rm -rf myfolder' I get an error telling me the folder is not empty. When I go down to the lowest level folder, I can only find DS_Store and .localized files in it. The properties are rather odd... output of ls -als is this:

When I try to delete files form my flash drive, the file picture goes away, but the actual data does not. Lets say I put a 900mb file on my 4gb flash drive, then I delete it. It will still ll me that only 3100MB are left in free space. If I try to add more than that it tells me the drive is full. I keep reformatting and reformatting into all different types on file systems but nothing works.

There was only 758mb free on the drive and I wondered why they would sell a computer with so little free space on it. When the updates was installed the drive was full. Is there a way to retrieve some space on the drive without deleting programs which came with the computer? I have tried ordering a new drive online without getting one, including Dell itself. In Windows you can delete old files which will free up some space and is wondering if the same thing is possible under Linux?

The first contains my Windows partition (with Windows 7 on it) and the second contains my backup partition. I always encrypt them with GPG, but there still is that original non-encrypted file left that needs to be deleted. I looked into tools like wipe, and shred but they all say that it really doesn't help on journaling filesystems directly on their man page.

I'm running Win 7 and installed pcLinux as a dual boot. I uninstalled linux to change disks but the partition still shows in the windows disk manager taking up space I need for windows programs. I have installed linux on another disk but cannot delete the partition on the windows disk.

Also, the modification timestamp (as detected by Krusader, the file manager I am using) is 1935. How can I delete these kind of files without affecting the running fs?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had some bad luck today when I was trying to fix an account that had trouble with FTP. I decided to remove the user and add him again and reset all configuration. Anyhow, to make things short, I accidently typed rm /* -R -f and without looking hit the enter button, as soon as I realised what I wrote I hit ctrl+c. Too bad the /bin/ folder was gone by this time and standard commands like ls didn't execute anymore.
My question is if there is any way to recover these files by a system repair or something? The server is used to host a heavy loaded site which can't afford any downtime, and silly me didn't make a backup of the whole HDD, just the important folders (not the system files).
Currently I don't have the balls to restart the server as I know this will probably turn into a dissaster. I also don't have straight access to this server since it is located in a datacenter (I can go there if absolutely necessary but I rather don't).
I'm very new with kubuntu. A friend st work turned me on to it. Seemed very simple. After a few days palying with it on a dual boot...i decided to fully install. I could not get thw wi-fi to work. Decided to reinstall. Could not get the reinstall to initiate. Tried to reinstall 7. no good.

Unsurprisingly I am now running out of space. I am figuring if I could somehow mount it onto a folder in my home partition I will have full permissions. I installed Ubuntu, with a dual boot functionality and worked great. I was recommended Backtrack 4 and I installed it in the system. Now, I try to use the dual boot with Backtrack, Ubuntu and Windows 7 and only Backtrack works. I tried the restore disks that I created when I got the laptop, but the problem persists. s there a way to delete this Backtrack from the system and go back to Windows 7?

However, when I delete a file from said partition, I am told that the item(s) cannot be moved to trash - I can only permanently delete files from the Windows partition.
