Is there a way to Transfer files between Linux based OS & Windows OS Without using SCP, FTP, TFTP, HTTP, USB, Netcat or samba share?
I have not installed Linux yet on my PC, andit has been years since I installed and used it.How will I transfer files between the two systems ondifferent drives the same computer? I suppose one still does not install Linux on an NTFS (windows) formatted disk so access would be natural?

1 server running regular Ubuntu, 40km above the surface of the earth on a scientific balloon behind an iridium modem (RUDICS) connected to its serial port
1 server on the ground running Ubuntu server
1 intermediate server used for contacting the iridium system from the ground server
I'm not sure if all the above details are completely necessary but I included them for completeness. I would like to be able to log into the balloon server and transfer files in both directions. The procedure for connecting is to telnet to the intermediate server and then to issue some modem commands to call the balloon. The balloon server is set with getty running on the serial port connected to the modem. The way I have figured out to transfer files is to run kermit on the ground server and connect to the balloon server through the intermediate server, then run kermit on the balloon server, and set it as a file server with the server command.
However, there is some sort of timeout or something, and only a few kB of any file gets transferred before the connection is broken. After that it seems like the ground server is trying to get the file from the intermediate server (which has no useful files on it at all). The file transfer screen stays open and it keeps trying and trying to transfer, until I type ^C. I don't know if there is a way of detecting through a kermit command whether the connection is still open or if there is some sort of switch to make the transfer automatically stop once it has stalled.
I have been reading about No Kermit Server (NKS) protocol, which seems to be designed for a system like this where the connection is across a third server. Is this likely to do a better job of keeping the connection open and the file transfer going? How can it be implemented? Is there any kermit command to determine from the ground server whether the connection is actually still open? Is there any way of telling whether the connection goes all the way to the balloon server or whether it ends at the intermediate server? I actually just learned about kermit today.
On a related note, is it possible to have the balloon server running getty on the serial port but still have the port accessible for reading and writing by, say, a python script (which could use the modem to dial down to the ground when it isn't in use)? It doesn't seem to work but I'm wondering if there is a way. Is there a way to temporarily stop getty, then restart it, or is this potentially hazardous? Keep in mind there will be no way to contact it if something goes wrong since it will be 40km above the earth.
I would like to transfer my music library and movie collection from my Desktop computer running Windows Vista and my laptop running Debian Squeeze. I have the laptop connected via wireless but it's possible to connect the two either directly with a CAT5e cable or through the router. I'm just wondering what the best way to do this would be.
View 8 Replies View RelatedLast month I installed (not upgrade) squeeze in place of lenny on my dual boot laptop where the other OS is windows 7 Home basic (both C and D drives). I just noticed it today that while I can get any file from the windows to my squeeze I am not permitted to put any file to windows. As far as I remember I was not asked during squeeze installation whether the windows drives would be read-only drives. This difficulty was not faced when I had lenny. Can this problem be remedied now without going through a re-installation?

I know that Linux has no viruses out in cyberland that affect it but would it be possible for a Micrcrap virus to wiggle through an Ubuntu partition and find its way into the Windows portion of the same hard drive on a dual boot system when the windows portion is not being used?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy Windows XP Pro laptop has been attacked! Windows will no longer update and Microsoft Security Essentials will not update either. I've been trying to resolve the issue for over two weeks with Microsoft support, but it's just taking too long. I also tried some rescue CD options (all running some form of Linux, obviously):
- BitDefender Rescue CD (removed infections, now detects nothing),
- Kaspersky Rescue CD 10 (removed infections, now detects nothing),
- Trinity Rescue CD (won't load AV Engine, so can't use it to do anything).
Malwarebytes cleaned a bunch of stuff, but will not clean the final threat detected (it's supposed to get deleted on reboot, but never does). Hijack.FolderOptions is stuck in the accursed registry, and it keeps causing Windows Explorer to crash. I cannot rename files or work with them or everything just crashes.
So I'm ready to reinstall XP from scratch, and add a dual boot with Xubuntu & LXDE, which I'm already running on a much older laptop.
Question: I want to rescue the files I need. My idea was:
1) Install Xubuntu with dual boot.
2) Copy over files from Windows XP partition using Xubuntu.
3) Back up files to an external drive using Xubuntu.
4) Reinstall XP Pro and format hard drive.
5) Reinstall Xubuntu with dual boot.
6) Use Xubuntu for daily use.
7) Only use XP for those tasks that require it (TomTom updates ...)
Should I be concerned about the security risk from copying files from the Windows partition to the Xubuntu partition, and from there onto an external hard drive?
Is this the way to do it, or is there a better way? I just want my laptop back in working order. Right now I can't use it for anything.
I have a Linksys router configured via Windows 7 and have to other PC's using Ubunto, and would like to share folders on the 2 Linux boxes with the Windows Laptop. I can see the windows network through the Linux machines but not vice-versa. Now, I have tried to share the files wirelessly but for some reason when I pick up the workgroup on the ubuntu laptop and enter the password in order to connect to the windows laptop it says my password is wrong, when I know for a fact that it is not. I am running some Pcap files through editcap and then tshark. I am running fedora 11. This will create a couple of thousand text files all numbered sequentially 1-x. How can I copy these files across a network(I connect using putty) or how can I copy them onto an external HD so that when I view them on the windows machine they have the right formatting (Windows know to open them with wordpad/notepad) basically that windows knows that they are text?

I cannot install additional software or services on the Windows XP machine. I can install any software on the Linux machine. I've tried scp, but the connection failed and if my understanding is correct it is because scp requires that the target (windows machine) be running an ssh service. Is there a command-line linux utility that can pass Windows domain user and password and then copy a file from the linux machine to a share on the windows machine?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI use Ubuntu 9.04 exclusively on my own machines, but I have a couple of flash drives that got infected by some corrupt windows executable (*.exe) files, probably by somebody's trojan (they are Cruzer 4GB so came with installed fancy programs that I dont need but didnt remove and Windows keeps installing unwanted ini files and other trash every time I use them in somebody elses machine or in an internet cafe). I deleted quite a few files, but some are stubborn.
$ sudo chmod +w-X doesnt seem to work. How do I unprotect and remove them? The filesystem is vFAT.
I suspect the files were created by some kind of a trojan as my work requires my flash to be pretty promiscuous.
When I 've backed up all the good files I need, I'd be happy to reformat the flash drives as straight vanilla data storage and retrieval, provided I can still use them on a variety of machines running MS windows as well as on my Linux machines. Any guidance on reformatting?
I am looking for a little help finding an appropriate application. Basically I am looking for something like a web based FTP client that runs on the file server (I use the term loosely) I have. Basically I want to be able to open a web browser on a different computer in my internal network, punch in hostnameort and get a web page that I can use to move files between the computer.
I don't care if it uses FTP or not. I basically just want the specific functionality. I have purchased a DLink Sharecenter Pulse NAS as my PC failed. I wanted to put the two SATA drives in and extract the data before formatting to use as JBOD or RAID. However, before I managed to access my data, the setup software started formatting the drives. I switched it off immediately.
Purchased a SATA to USB2 lead and connected to my work laptop but I cannot see the drive(s). Used Partition Magic and each drive has 3 partitions - of which show about 74GB as used and 2 x 512MB as not. Looks like the drives have been partly set for Linux but the format was not comlete. Have tried to use explore2fs to read them but I cannot access the 74 GB partition only one of the 512MB partitions.
I'm a bit stuck now - any one got any ideas how I can get my files off the 74GB partition before I put them back in the NAS to format.

I am transferring a file from a linux pc going to a windows ftp server using "ftp put". My file is a zip file that includes .txt files inside it. Here is what's happening when I transferred this file :I used ftp put for transferring and found that my transferred zip file was corrupted and couldn't be opened on the ftp server.I found the solution for this on the internet. I needed to use 'binary' to make it right.
I transferred again using binary and then ftp put the zip file onto the other end. Yes, it worked. My zip file wasn't corrupted anymore and I could already opened it on the ftp server. But the problem remains on the .txt files inside it. Converting the file into binary made my .txt files to be distorted and unreadable. I read from the internet that .txt files need to use Ascii instead of Binary to be readable, but if I use ascii it would cause my zip file to be corrupted again. I need to successfully transfer a zip file that contains .txt files using ftp put.

I build a new test machine where i need to bring data from live machine. the data is kind of flat files and some propreitary application axigen mail server.
now what i am suffering from, which commands to do first practise. there is remote site with 1mps speed of wireless between live and test machine. on daily basis aprox 14gb .tar.gz files it need to move it.
i found scp,rcp,rsync,sftp etc. which is fastest way to replicate or copy to remote machines.
the data is on live machine /var/opt/application and on remote same directory too /var/opt/application
i try using scp it take aprox 8-10 hours to copy single 14gb file.
if possible where to see such commands logs results, if anything get down error discontinue while copying.
I have a Windows 7 Desktop and an Ubuntu Laptop connected with a KVM switch. I use the setup for software development, so I am constantly switching between the two, so I need a way to quickly transfer files between the two. I'm not sure if this is possible, but if I could connect them in a way where the OS of each mounts the hard drive of the other. Is there a way I could do this?
