Grub2 fails when trying to boot into Win 7 from Grub2 menu. No such a device. I did run boot_info_script055.sh Here is the result:

I had grub trouble with a hardware change and have been trying to solve this. I think I have done more harm then good. I can not boot into Ubuntu or Windows 7. Here is the boot info script and other info on my problem. Can someone please help me with this,

I used to have 2 HDDs for ubuntu: 1 x 80GB and 1 x 500GB The 500GB disk was my /home directory and is now used exclusively for Windows 7. I have now moved /home to the 80GB drive and have modified /etc/fstab to point /home to /home rather than /dev/sdb1. However, I cannot boot into ubuntu. I have tried using Super Boot Disk cd-rom but still no joy. I think I need to fix grub and have tried by booting into a Live-CD and following a tutorial I found on the forums but it complains about not being able to find a device.map I guess this has something to do with the fact that the 500GB HDD is now gonoe but am not sure how to resolve this issue. how to recreate this file but the command failed.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a raid array using mdadm made up of two drives. The drives have two parts, the first for boot information and the 2nd for LVM. Everything but /boot is under LVM management. Originly the two drives were hooked up to a sata controller in a computer with no on-board sata. However I was not able to get the computer to boot to a sata drive off of that controller. So there was an IDE drive with the MBR that loaded grub.
Now the computer in that setup seems to have died. So the drives were moved to another computer with an on-board sata controller and now the bootup works as far as getting to the grub menu. However after the grub menu the error message "Cannot find root device"
I found the boot info script [URL].. note at the time that was run the computer was running with one drive that has a full Debian install with the raid drive in question mounted and chrooted into. The script was ran from the chroot envirment.[URL]..
I've installed a Squeeze-based distro - Crunchbang - with an encrypted root partition (no LVM), and it won't boot.
Here's what I get: Loading initial ramdisk. Loading, Gave up waiting for root device ALERT! /dev/mapper/hda5_crypt does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
Here's my partition table:
hda1 - Windows (Truecrypted)
hda2 - GRUB2

What should I look for? Where do I go from the initramfs shell? Do I chroot? What then? This might be a Crunchbang issue (although others blame LVM which I didn't use, and it's the original Debian installer after all), but there's gotta be a reason it doesn't boot
So I've a computer with a lot of disks which is running Ubuntu 9.04. The setup is made od a software raid 1 array of 200 MB for use in /boot (md0), then another raid1 array of the remaining space as a unique PV for the LVM2 vg0. This vg0 is split in many lv, for /, /usr .... and swap. A few days back, one of the raid1 disk went wrong. So as the raid is built on 160Gb disks and nobody in my town sells so little disks I bought a couple of 320GB disks. The partitioning was made like the original partitions, except that the second partition is way bigger than it was. I replaced the failed disk in the arrays, and now I've an md0 of 200 MB and an md1 of roughly 150GB as it was previously and all is in sync. This replacement was made using a rescue disk (in order to be sure that the machine was not locking anything...)
So I thought it was fine. But upon reboot on the hard disks, I get a fast GRUB message "error: no such device : <UUID ending in 4ec05>. when I start the first Ubuntu entry I get the same error. So I edit the boot entry, remove the "search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set <UUID ending in 4ec05> " and boot the damn thing. When booted I ran :

I have been working on this for a week now, and I am still getting an error on boot up from GRUB 2.
It tells me "ALERT!! /dev/sda5 not found" basically. I've tried purging and reinstalling GRUB 2 (from within Ubuntu and from a Live CD) to no avail. I never had any boot problems running karmic (9.10); these problems appeared and have persisted upon upgrading to lucid (10.4, which included upgrading from GRUB Legacy, I believe), and then on to maverick (10.10).
This error takes about 20-30sec to crop up in the boot sequence, and then I am given an "(initram)" prompt. If I wait a few seconds and then type "exit," the system boots up quickly with no problems (aside from issues w/ plymouth, but that's for another thread).
I have included the "Results.txt" file generated by boot_info_script.

i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 15, which was my first real departure from Debian based Linux OSs. I absolutely love the new Gnome 3, and was able to configure F15 to work as I wanted it to. On rebooting I realized that there was no boot loader screen, that F15 just booted and didn't give me a choice as to which OS I wanted to use. Eventually I was able to configure grub to let me see the boot loader and added my old boot loader as a choice. This worked well, maybe not a perfect solution, but it worked. This weekend I installed LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to another HDD. LMDE uses grub2 and after the install F15 was not recognized.
Two questions: Is there a way for grub2 to see F15? or Can F15 be installed using grub2? I really don't mind re-installing from scratch.
I want to load grub2 from grub4dos.I want to load directly the grub2 core. I know how to load first 512 bytes from some patition by chainloader and load grub2, but what I need is to load directly grub2 core without passing by bootstriping code (first 512 bytes).So, my first boot manager is grub4dos, then I can load grub2 and later I load Ubuntu. But I think I have to edit --set-root
What I dont know is how.
In hdd 0,7 (sda8) I have Ubuntu 10.10 and /boot/grub/core.img is in sda8 (hd0.7)

But this tells me nothing about where the device file is! How can I find that, or create one myself?
Recently, I created a device sc0 through device mapper. The divice could be found in /dev/mapper/sc0. My problem is that the device doesn't exist in /dev/partitions which will block my following test.BTW, I found dm-0 in /dev/partitions. Is it the same as /dev/mapper/sc0? But the device /dev/dm-0 doesn't exist!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am working on an embedded system, which is an USB MSC device that supports some vendor specific scsi commands. I am using FC10 laptop as USB host for testing, and it runs some small apps based on sg3. All has been well for ~ a week. The FC10 laptop is able to communicate with the device and retrieve data. Suddenly, starting from today, the laptop is not able to properly detect the device. When plugged-in, the MSC device is detected as input device (I thought). This is observed from "dmesg" output and changes in "/dev/input/".The device under development is running at full speed. When I connect to winXP, no problem. A windows file explorer pops up, showing the content of the drive.Also, the FC10 has no problem with other USB flash drive (high speed).

I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?

Since May 12,2009. Our system lifekeeper has the error log "lifekeeper error: DEVICE FAILURE on SCSI device '/dev/add'", but it ran normally. Until last week, it failover to the standby server. The disk still running, the error still come out.

I installed ZTE MF 626 modem in my F10 with kernel 2.6.27.12-170, i run usb_modeswitch and so far things happened normally. Watching through /var/log/messages it says that F10 detects two port device for this modem: ttyUSB1 and ttyUSB2, and in the sequence it disable port ttyUSB1 BUT Network Manager still set this port.I mean, when i connect via wvdial appointing to ttyUSB2 i get connection, but Network Manager fails to do it appointing to ttyUSB1. I get an error message saying that the print queue cannot be started and it asks me to restart CUPS. I tried restarting CUPS and adding the device. It did not work. The printer is on my home network wirelessly. I can add it through the CUPS web interface and print, but then I cannot access the scanner. I tried adding the device after it was already added through CUPS, but that did not work. I would like to use the scanner; I don't really care about the fax.
View 8 Replies View RelatedReboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.
All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.
Is there a way to set a key map in grub2? I know you could do it in grub1 with the setkey option, but that doesn't seem to work in grub2.
