Ubuntu :: GRUB2 "Device Not Found" Since Upgrade To 10.10

I have been working on this for a week now, and I am still getting an error on boot up from GRUB 2.
It tells me "ALERT!! /dev/sda5 not found" basically. I've tried purging and reinstalling GRUB 2 (from within Ubuntu and from a Live CD) to no avail. I never had any boot problems running karmic (9.10); these problems appeared and have persisted upon upgrading to lucid (10.4, which included upgrading from GRUB Legacy, I believe), and then on to maverick (10.10).
This error takes about 20-30sec to crop up in the boot sequence, and then I am given an "(initram)" prompt. If I wait a few seconds and then type "exit," the system boots up quickly with no problems (aside from issues w/ plymouth, but that's for another thread).
I have included the "Results.txt" file generated by boot_info_script.

have recently upgraded Slackware/Salix 13.0 to 13.1 and it all went smooth except for one problem with the mixer which apparently cannot be found. Only OSS card is seen in Xfce mixer, and OSS works, but no alsa card.I have a Via82xx onboard chip and a SB Audigy 1 [SB0092], Emu10K1. Via was set up with an alias as the first to load. All this worked perfectly in 13.0. Now aplay gives the following message:Quote:

I'm a long time Linux user. Finally got around to upgrading my Fedora 11 system to Fedora 12 by using the 'preupgrade' tool. The upgrade appeared to go well (downloaded packages, rebooted into installer, etc). However, now that the upgrade is complete, I'm unable to boot my system.
Here's my configuration:
/dev/sda (80Gb)
200Mb /boot partition (ext3)
52Gb / partition (ext4 - managed as logical volume)
2Gb swap partition (managed as logical volume)
20Gb /spare partition (ext3 - managed as logical volume) .....
All worked fine under Fedora 11 for the last few months. Grub now presents me with 'Fedora' and 'Windows XP' boot options. The /boot/grub/menu.lst file is essentially the same as it was for Fedora 11, except for the different kernel versions, etc. The boot sequence shows the Fedora bubble (??) and gets about 80% full when the screen goes black and the message displayed is:
No root device found
Boot has failed, sleeping forever
If I boot Windows, all works fine.
Am able to boot using a SystemRescueCD disk. The disks all look okay and I can mount/modify all partitions, etc. The grub menu.lst file read as follows (sorry, typed in, not copied):

Grub2 fails when trying to boot into Win 7 from Grub2 menu. No such a device. I did run boot_info_script055.sh Here is the result:

I had grub trouble with a hardware change and have been trying to solve this. I think I have done more harm then good. I can not boot into Ubuntu or Windows 7. Here is the boot info script and other info on my problem. Can someone please help me with this,

I used to have 2 HDDs for ubuntu: 1 x 80GB and 1 x 500GB The 500GB disk was my /home directory and is now used exclusively for Windows 7. I have now moved /home to the 80GB drive and have modified /etc/fstab to point /home to /home rather than /dev/sdb1. However, I cannot boot into ubuntu. I have tried using Super Boot Disk cd-rom but still no joy. I think I need to fix grub and have tried by booting into a Live-CD and following a tutorial I found on the forums but it complains about not being able to find a device.map I guess this has something to do with the fact that the 500GB HDD is now gonoe but am not sure how to resolve this issue. how to recreate this file but the command failed.

I have a Netbook Remix install on an SD card that won't boot. Grub2 in the recovery mode shows it fails finding the root files by using UUID. It's my first Grub2 install and I'm not sure how to go about debugging it. The machine boots the same version from a USB stick.

I recently installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix (10.04) on my brother's Acer Aspire One (751h) netbook, set up to dual boot with XP Professional. The initial install was successful, with both OS's booting correctly. However, after a series of updates and module builds (this machine has the Poulsbo chipset, still somewhat of a mess), Grub2 is now unable to boot XP, displaying the error "Operating system not found."
To be clear, grub works properly (aside from not booting XP), so the MBR is intact, although I've rerun grub-install to be safe. Restoring the windows MBR (using testdisk) boots XP happily, but of course ignores the ubuntu installation. I also had testdisk rebuild the NTFS boot sector, to no change - grub still doesn't work, the windows MBR does. Using the grub console, I can "root (hd0,1)" and see files on the XP partition, but "chainloader +1; boot" again fails with the same error. The ubuntu install can likewise mount the NTFS partition with no problems.
Given the fact that switching the MBR fixes the issue, I'm suspecting a Grub2 configuration problem. However, the simplicity of "root (hd0,1); chainloader +1; boot" leaves me stumped as to what that could be. Also, the error text "Operating system not found" is suspiciously identical to my BIOS's error message when attempting to boot from a non-bootable medium (as I found out while attempting to make a bootable usb stick with my mac).

I have been reading this but could not resolve my issue: [URL]. The problem is as follows. I got a samsung laptop and there is some kind of recovery utility installed. After installing Ubuntu I get too windows grub entries, one is called Windows Vista (loader) on /dev/sda1 and the other one is Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda2. The latter is correct and the first one is something that I'd rather not have active at all in the grub menu. Both of them are of course created by 30_os-prober in /etc/grub.d. I figured that I would most likely prefer a custom entry for Windows 7 and remove the x flag from 30_os-prober. I tried to create a file 50_windows7 in a described manner:

I have a Windows Vista-Ubuntu 11.04 dual-boot. However, I have lost the ability to boot Windows Vista. I can select Windows in the GRUB menu, but GRUB says

I have a raid array using mdadm made up of two drives. The drives have two parts, the first for boot information and the 2nd for LVM. Everything but /boot is under LVM management. Originly the two drives were hooked up to a sata controller in a computer with no on-board sata. However I was not able to get the computer to boot to a sata drive off of that controller. So there was an IDE drive with the MBR that loaded grub.
Now the computer in that setup seems to have died. So the drives were moved to another computer with an on-board sata controller and now the bootup works as far as getting to the grub menu. However after the grub menu the error message "Cannot find root device"
I found the boot info script [URL].. note at the time that was run the computer was running with one drive that has a full Debian install with the raid drive in question mounted and chrooted into. The script was ran from the chroot envirment.[URL]..

I've installed a Squeeze-based distro - Crunchbang - with an encrypted root partition (no LVM), and it won't boot.
Here's what I get: Loading initial ramdisk. Loading, Gave up waiting for root device ALERT! /dev/mapper/hda5_crypt does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
Here's my partition table:
hda1 - Windows (Truecrypted)
hda2 - GRUB2
hda5 - /
hda6 - unused swap

What should I look for? Where do I go from the initramfs shell? Do I chroot? What then? This might be a Crunchbang issue (although others blame LVM which I didn't use, and it's the original Debian installer after all), but there's gotta be a reason it doesn't boot

I have a Dell Vostro 3300, i5 460 processor with a NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card. I'm doing a KUBUNTU 10.10 (Maverick) install with the following results. The Live CD boots just fine to, "TEST," or "Install." Installation goes fine. However, the graphics card being used is the Intel i915. I have tried installing the NVIDIA drivers directly from the, "Additional Drivers," tool and after the reboot I get through the boot screen to the console. I try to manually startx and I get the errors, "no device found," "no screens found." The second install I tried purging and blacklisting the nouveau drivers and entering safe mode. Then using apt-get install nvidia-current. After that, nvidia-xconfig. Same results.
The third attempt I re-installed and this time downloaded the drivers from the Nvidia site (version 256.53). Blacklisted nouveau, remove all nvidia, updated initramfs, etc. The install went fine however I still end up at a console after boot with the same messages as above. No device found, no screens found. I've tried searching through the forum and web and have tried things like adding the modset option along with many other hacks, tips and fixes. still, no go.I can live with the Intel graphics for now although I lose 512MB of memory. Unfortunately there is no way to disable or change this set-up in the BIOS. I've seen quite a few bug reports at Launchpad:
1. Is this something I should just wait til a fix comes? Will a fix come?
2. Is there, or will there be an official Updated Ubuntu Guide for Maverick to install NVIDIA drivers with this tecnology?
3. Lastly, is there anything else I should try??

I recently downloaded grub2 source code for my F13 installation and it compiled and installed perfectly, but when I rebooted nothing had happened and grub was still version .97. Is there something I didn't do?

Dual PII 400, 512Mb with a Promise SuperTrak 100 IDE Array Controller. At present I have only one drive on the controller, configured for 1 JBOD array. I install FC9 with no problem. New partition is created and formatted, Grub is installed, and then... Grub is found and booted, but then I get:

My machines are using Kubuntu 9.10 but not from a fresh install. They are being upgraded from 8.04, 8.10, 9.04 until this version. So I still have GRUB1 as the bootloader. Can I upgrade to GRUB2? If yes, how? Will I gain anything with this upgrade?

I am dual-booting XP, and all has been fine for a while....until I upgraded Grub yesterday. This was due to the boot menu not updating properly, and I realised the system was still using the old grub. The update instructions I used advised putting grub2 on all partitions if you were not sure which one to go for.....I guess this has "upset" the chainloading process, as when I select XP from the menu, I just get a black screen with flashing white cursor, which doesn't seem to respond to anything except CNTRL+ALT+DELETE!
I can still access all Windows files from Linux, and can see that system files like boot.ini are sill there. Both systems have been backed up, but would prefer not reinstalling right now if possible.
Below I'll paste grub.cfg and fdisk -l; any suggestions gratefully received!
ps the computer is a Sony Viao laptop: Core Duo 1.6 GHz - 1 GB Ram - 80 GB HDD, running XP Media Centre and Ubuntu 10.04

I installed debian 4.0 (etch) on an old computer with some pickled graphics card in it, and then I upgraded the computer to one with slightly newer hardware only without the graphics card (the new one used on board graphics). I moved the hard drive from the old one to the new one but when I booted it up it failed to start the X-server and I got some errors listed for "device not found" and "no screens found".
I tried using "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" however I can't seem to find a working configuration. It seems pretty silly that when installing debian it can detect all this automatically with no problems but when it comes to changing some hardware around you are left in the dark with a complicated re-configuration process. Is there not some way to automate this? I'd rather not have to re-install everything

I upgraded yesterday ubuntu 9.10 to 2.6.31-19 kernel. After reboot, I get stack to GRUB black screen. No possibilities.
My set-up is triple boot 9.04, 9.10 and winxp. The MBR is handled by win boot.ini with no problems. Each ubuntu partition has a grub installed in it.
9.04 is on sda5 with grub installed on it ext3
9.10 is on sda9 with grub2 installed on it ext4
I am able to boot into sda9, via grub of sda5 obviously passing the correct kernel parameters and UUID.

I just bought an hp 6500 wireless printer, and after taking 5 minutes to set it up (amazing how easy it is to get hardware working that supported by Linux) I was happily printing...But- I haven't managed to get it to scan from my desktop pc running 9.04. Tells me no device is found. I added the printer to a laptop running 9.10, and it scanned perfectly straight away...
I've been through the Ubuntu help documentation and haven't found a solution.I think that maybe Turbo Print (for our old Canon printer) might have messed something up. I had to uninstall Turbo Print to get the printer to work (it hijacked Ubuntu's built in printing stuff).

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 (no fresh install, an upgrade). During the upgrade, the installer asked me for the harddisks and partitions to include. I gave him the following ones:
Harddisk 1
1. Windows XP
2. Windows 2000
Harddisk 2
3. Ubuntu 10.04
After the installation was complete, I could only start Ubuntu. Both Windows versions just showed a flashing cursor at the left upper top screen. No HDD activity! How can I get WinXP and Win2000 selectable within grub2?

I have been running a dual boot XP and Ubuntu 8.04 on two separate hard drives for a while now without any problems. I used the method posted http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...light=dualboot. I will be upgrading to 10.4 soon (probably after the re-spin in July) and was wondering if I will have problems after upgrading dual booting.
I do not know if while upgrading Grub remains or if Grub2 tries to overwrite. I have read that Grub2 will try to install onto all partitions and hard drives in a fresh install but do not know about upgrading. If it does try I think I need to put it in hda,1 which is the primary drive where Ubuntu is located.
This is not something I have been able to find the answer to with google. I also have Kubuntu on the system which I can change with session manager and am not sure what will happen to that once I upgrade Ubuntu.

I took the distribution upgrade from the update manager and can't boot now. Boot into a Live CD (ver. 9.10 - does that matter?), and go through the following steps.

My girlfriend upgraded from Karmic 9.10 to Lucid 10.04 when the upgrade became available. She did it from Update Manager as opposed to a clean install.
I have no idea what she did, or how the process works (I installed from a Live CD on my own computer) and ever since she did it, she hasn't been able to boot into Windows XP from GRUB2.
GRUB2 loads up fine, with Ubuntu and Windows listed. It'll boot into Ubuntu with no problems. Selecting Windows will just re-load GRUB2.
I've tried re-installing GRUB2 but that hasn't worked. My lack of imagination means I have no idea what to type in to Google, or the forum search.

Last night I attempted to upgrade my Ubuntu 10.10 (amd64) machine. After reboot (it installed a new kernel), the grub menu only had the memtest. Booted into a livecd and it seems that I was missing most of the files in /etc/grub.d/. Reinstalled grub-common and grub-pc didn't seem to restore the files. I ended up having to download the dpkg, expand it and copy the files manually so I could get the box generate grub.conf and boot up. I think grub may have been broken before the upgrade but exhibited the problem when it upgraded the kernel and reran upgrade-grub but I can't seem to figure out why reinstalling grub doesn't add the files back.

I installed UEFI Ubuntu 10.10. Its grub2 version is 1.98. I want to upgrade it to 1.99.I try to use 'grub-install' and 'grub-setup' commands but I faild to upgrade the grub2.
And, when I add my ram to 4G, the system hangs and displays 'Not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknow-block(1,0)'
