I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome as my desktop enviroment. I used Wubi to install from my laptop's default OS, Vista. I keep most of my media on the Windows partition, mostly for ease of use - such as streaming a movie through my xbox etc I would like to know if there is a way to edit the Gnome 'places' menu to have Music, Pictures etc direct to my /host/users equivalent.

I installed the latest version of Thunderbird by downloading the tarball and copying the contents to the required folder and just point launchers to the Thunderbird file.
However I cannot get GNOME Do to run Thunderbird. When I type run in Gnome Do, I go through the entire list without having Thunderbird as an option. The only plugin I can find is one that allows you to copy Thunderbird contacts to the clipboard.
I have set Thunderbird to be my default mail client, so when I type an email address I can choose to compose a mail in GNOME Do, but just opening up Thunderbird to check mail is not possible.

Usually I open 5 terminals. And since each of those 5 terminals prints it's tile as: "username@username-laptop: ~" It becomes very hard to see what is what. So, I would like my terminal to always change it's title automatically to the program that I am currently using.
So, if I type "irssi", the title of my gnome-terminal-window, should change to: "irssi" for example.

I'm trying to migrate to Ubuntu from Mac OS X. I have set up a dual boot on my MacBook and I am currently working to get everything I need for my computing-life up and running in Ubuntu.
I have found almost everything, expect a speech synthesis similar to the one native to Mac OS X's.
I use the OS X speech synthesis to have text I have written read back to be, I'm not blind; just really good a missing small words. What I don't want is to have all the menus and bottoms read out, only text I have selected.
I have tried something with 'festival' and some GUI overlay (think that is what it is called) but it read absolutely everything out loud (and sounds like Amiga's speech engine, i.e. a quite low quality).
In my Mac OS X I have a really nice set up (with a voice called Alex) where I can start speech of selected text with "cmd + ; " and stop it with " cmd+' " (two shortcuts not used by the system).

Circle Dock which is(in my opinion)a very cool Open source application which is essentially a circular, Oval, spiral dock for windows which is implemented in .Net using C#. Ever since I got to use it on windows I have been desperate to find an equivalent for Linux-The closest thing I have found is Circular application menu which is very different. I was wondering if anyone knew of something like circle dock that runs on linux?

if there exists a Mac OS X equivalent to the Wubi software. Or something similar that allows you to run Linux next to Mac OS X just like Wubi does on Windows. I've heard of something called Cooperative Linux, is that similar to Wubi?

Does Ubuntu have an equivalent to system restore like windows?
I just want to know what the best way is to save everything , as in settings and programs etc. , just in case there's some sort of major failure.
Any ghosting programs that will allow me to save the last known good configuration? or clone the entire drive?
Since I've been using Ubuntu I haven't run into any major screwups like with windows , but there are some times I've installed it and it took a while to get different things working. I don't want to have to go through the whole process again if there's ever a major malfunction.

Here at work we've made very good use of Server 2003's Shadow Copy service, which lets me restore users' files quickly and easily using the Previous Versions software--yet takes minimal resources and storage space on the server. I've also heard that the service may be available to users in Windows 7. Is there an equivalent of this in Ubuntu? Something I could set up that would snapshot files on my hard drive every so often, and let me recover deleted files or earlier versions of files?

Does Ubuntu have the equivalent of a Windows .exe self-installable file? If so, what is it called? I seem to remember installing LimeWire on Ubuntu a while back and the file I downloaded was self-installable. Is there a place where Ubuntu programs are available for download as packages that install themselves? Why are most programs for Linux not self-installable, like .exe installers in Windows? Is there a security advantage to most programs not being available for download a single automatic install file? It would be much easier for me to go to a program's website, download a single file that installs by itself, and be done with it.
Also, why is it that, unless you install a program in Ubuntu using synaptic package manager, the program cannot be uninstalled under GUI? I really love Ubuntu, but find that even having simple control over installing and uninstalling programs is a real pain. I would love to go to LibreOffice's website, download a single file for Ubuntu that would install the entire program, install it, and be done with it.

I'm booting from the bash command line, and I was wondering if there is a way to make it to where when 'gdm' is called it is always called as if it had root permissions. Just so I don't always have to type 'sudo gdm' and enter a password (which would require entering a password twice, since the gdm splash screen also asks for a password.)
