General :: Not Recognizing 'new' Ubuntu8.1 Disk When Attempt To Add Program Packages In Gnome?
Nov 22, 2010
adding some program packages doesn't seem to be working out of add/remove, asking me to insert Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Release i386 (20081030) which i believed to be the 8.1 desktop release i received with the laptop. doesn't recognize it. is this the wrong cd?

Im using it in an attempt to backup all of the files off of my dead Windows xp Computer. Right now I am using the 9.10 live disk of Ubuntu and cannot get the program to recognize what kind of file system my internal hard drive is using. (A western digital 320 GB hard drive with partition 1 in NTFS and part2 in FAT32) I would like to be able to back up this drive onto my 1 TB Western Digital external hard drive that is also in ntfs.
Now here comes the wierd part, it won't read or recognize my interal and external hard drives that run those file systems but it will recognize and allow me to read, edit, and access all of the ntfs hard drives on my home network. I did some lurking and tried a tutorial for creating a mount point and on how to force mount a disk, but neither of my disks would show up in Places/Computer. So then I checked the /etc/fstab file and is says,
aufs / aufs rw 0 0
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nosuid,nodev 0 0
Which I think means that it says I have no hard drives installed or connected to the computer. Yet when I go into Disk Utility it tells me the disk is there and asks if I want to format the disk into ntfs...

When I try 'makebootdisk' and get to the 'format' stage, it tells me: "The attempt to format the floppy disk in /dev/fd0 has failed ..." The disk is fine, and can be read from, but the above msg. shows up instantly -- the light on the drive doesn't even come on. I'd expect this to be a routine problem but I can't find any solutions either here or on the web.

I'm having trouble getting Ubuntu installed on my desktop, I'm trying to get a dual boot going with Windows 7.
The Windows 7 install was fine and the OS is working with no problems at all. But when I try and install Ubuntu, the installer can't see any hard disks on the system. The first screen is OK where it checks for available disk space, but on the following screen there are no disks listed.
I can boot into the Live CD with no problems, and I can see the disk and create partitions with GParted, but when I go back into the install it can't see them. fdisk -l can see them as well code...
I tried using the all_generic_ide option as well because I saw that in another post but it didn't help. I'm not really sure where to go from here, I've looked in the BIOS and there's very few options relating to the HDD, and none of them seem relevant. There's no RAID configuration or anything weird like that.
The machine is an AMD 64 with a Gigabyte GA-K8N-SLI motherboard. The HDD is a 250GB SATA2. The disk seems fine, and I've verified the install DVD as well, it seems to be OK (I tried both the 32 and 64 bit installers).

I am trying to load vmware server. When running vmware-install.pl it asks where to load the bin files. Default is /usr/bin. Cool with me, so I accept then get the error:
"There is insufficient disk space available in /usr/bin. Please make at least an additional 5924k available or choose another directory."
Ok, so in my searches, most cases people actually do have a full disk. I have 30gb free. Another post somewhere stated it could be the file system used, so I tried different file systems. Now I am back on etx3. What's odd is when I blow away the OS and reload and try to install VMware again, I get a different number to be "freed" in the error. Choosing another directory only yeilds a different disk space request.

if anyone can send me in the proper direction for this question, I would be grateful. I installed the newest Linux mint on the newest version of virtual box. I'm have trouble with program "giver" recognizing the virtual machines. I'm not sure if it has to do with the fact that, its using my mac's ip addresses or not. i have 2 other Linux mints installed on two other pc's on the same local network, and they recognize each other just fine. so my question is, does a virtual machine have to have its own ip address for program "giver" to recognize each other? maybe i have to change the network driver on vbox, but every time i do, i lose connection. at the moment, my network driver is set to NAT.

I have an Acer Aspire One, Model PAV70 that had Windows 7 Starter on it. I booted Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB HDD and then formatted the Acer drive with Ubuntu. I then started installing Ubuntu on the newly formatted HDD and got an error near the end of the install. It said, "apt configuration problem, an attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the cd failed." After this happened the system locked up and I had to reboot. Now I get a black screen with a white blinking cursor. I can't get the system to recognize anything. What can I do?

Could you suggest feature-rich disk-based personal backup program for Linux (and I've seen a few)?
I want to do nightly backups of the whole system and be able to rollback to any of last 7 days. And, it must be incremental backups. What tool should I use? The tutorials I've read about rsync tell only how to store latest incremental backup and I need last 7.

Recently I've read an interview at Distrowatch, where a topic was the compatibility of Slackware and Zenwalk packages. My understanding was that now they should both be used in both systems.
As Slackware doesn't feature a complete GNOME distribution, my curiosity was about the ability of Zenwalk's GNOME packages play a role there. If so, the second question is how intrusive those packages are considering Slackware 13.1.

I have a real newbie question. I want to edit my disk partition table. Mount some drives etc. I like gui tools and gnome's disk utility seems to be able to do everything I want to. My problem: When I want to create a new filesystem on an empty space, I'm not allowed to. I guess I need root access, but I can't login as root to my gnome session and I know no way to start the disk utility from a terminal where I'm the root user, so my question is: How do I do this?

I recently tried Fedora on my laptop (previously Debian; I was bored one day) and gnome-disk-utility (palimpsest) warned me that my hard drive had numerous bad sectors. I re-installed Debian to find that this software was installed before so why had it not warned me?
When I load the disk utility, it says SMART is not available. I've got smartmontools installed, I can run a self-test with smartctl but I don't think this shows bad sectors. I've tried starting smartd on startup but the disk utility never changes from "SMART is not available". It is possible for it to work with this hardware as it works in Fedora on this laptop; any ideas?

I can successfully access one of our local samba shares, which is on a windows pc (called marina) as follows:
$ sudo /usr/bin/smbclient \\marina\resource_library <my password>
Domain=[MARINA] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]
smb: >
So, that works. I'm now trying to mount the above location (the resource_library folder on marina) to /mnt/resource_library (as a read only folder), but it keeps failing - I've tried a few variations of specifying the location:
$ sudo smbmount \\marina\resource_library /mnt/resource_library -o username=max,password=<my password>,r
mount error: could not resolve address for marina: No address associated with hostname
No ip address specified and hostname not found
and
$ sudo smbmount //marina/resource_library /mnt/resource_library -o username=max,password=<my password>,r
mount error: could not resolve address for marina: No address associated with hostname
No ip address specified and hostname not found
And both of the above with MARINA instead of marina.

I am in the process of re-DL-ing the ISO as the checksums didn't match.
Mind you, that was with a shell extension in Win-Lose. Who knows.
Anyway:
I have the ISO (that I had previously) on a USB courtesy of UNetBootIn. All appears well until, quite quickly, I receive an error after the loading process which goes something like:
Code:
Error: cannot find disk at [hash-code - looks like 0ace5f etc etc, is about 12 char's in length.]Something very similar (but not same error I think) happened when I tried to do the same with my OpenSolaris or Fedora install. I.e., gets as far as the very beginning of the loader and then: bork.
At least one of them said "will reboot in 120 secs". Saves me the trouble!

how to uninstall packages via the program name? For example, if I want to uninstall the program "KWordQuiz" then I would usually have to use the command removepkg -package name But unfortunately I have a fresh install and want to get rid of a lot of programs. So instead of using the package repository and finding each package which would take days (maybe) and removing them individually I'd like to remove a program and all its supporting packages. I am probably just rambling on... Umm, so yes is there a way, or do I have to suck it up and sit at the keyboard for days.

If I try logging into my server using a wrong username and then press ^C to terminate or exhaust my password attempts, I am locked out for at least an hour. Is there something I can do on my end to fix this problem?

I think the installation caused the corruption of the partition table. I removed the last 3 logical partitions and gparted correctly reported the 2 remaining distros and the swap. The problem hopefully will be solved when I reinstall those distros. I have a 160 gig HD with 3 Linux,1 swap,and a Windows partition. I attempted to install PCLINUXOS unsuccessfully. When I rebooted I had the same grub. I checked gparted and it indicated all 160 gigs as unallocated. fdisk shows the partitions. and indicates one partition as empty where I attempted to install PCLOS.
No problem in accessing any of my distros, but currently I can't make any changes to my HD. I've tried parted magic and there was no solution there. I have been unable to download the Ubuntu Rescue remix. Is there a way to restore? I haven't used fdisk or cfdisk for that purpose. I am beginning to think I would need to delete all of the partitions in the extended.

I've installed yesterday xmms and now I want to uninstall it. I've done it with yum. When I uninstall it like this: "yum remove xmms", then yum removes this package, but, when I check "yum list | grep xmms" I get full list of other packages like bluecurve-xmms-skin.noarch, gkrellxmms2.x86_64, gxmms2.x86_64 , ...
I want to cleanly remove the xmms, so I should remove all this packages "manually"? Is there a method to check wich packages are not used by any program on my computer and remove them? Or any method to remove all packages with a program automatic?

I have just changed my web pages mostly to .shtml to take advantage of ssi.Now, when I go to my website, it gives an "index of /" page instead of showing the .shtml files.I have read in many places that .shtml files have to be specifically set up to be recognized as index files, but I cannot for the life of me get it to work or even to understand where I'm supposed to put all of the configuration stuff.I need to know what to change to make the apache 2 parse .shtml files for ssi and also to make apache check for .shtml files as an index file.

I am currently running an Asus EEe PC 1000H with Windows 7 installed on it. I am trying to set up a dual boot with Debian. My problem is: I boot the netbook via an SD card with the netinstaller image. When it comes to create partitions, the installer tells me, that my HDD is completely empty, which is not true. I have 3 partitions, one with w7, one with stuff (fat32) and one empty, where debian should go. Because it doesn't recognize my partitions, it only wants to create a new partition on the supposedly empty HDD, which is not what I want. Why does it not recognize my HDD? It always worked with Ubuntu, LinuxMint etc.
