Ubuntu :: Making Calling 'gdm' Equivalent To 'sudo Gdm'

Jul 12, 2011

I'm booting from the bash command line, and I was wondering if there is a way to make it to where when 'gdm' is called it is always called as if it had root permissions. Just so I don't always have to type 'sudo gdm' and enter a password (which would require entering a password twice, since the gdm splash screen also asks for a password.)

Fedora Security :: Terminal Equivalent Of "sudo" Is It Still Sudo/KDEsudo

May 29, 2010

I am new to fedora (been using debian based distro's for the longest time). With the new release I decided to give FC13 (The kde 64 bit spin) a try. I told it to wipe my entire hdd and encrypt the partitions. The partition manager made a few LVM partitions which I assume are encrypted.

The problem I am having is that if I attempt to use an application that would normally need root access to run, I am not prompted to enter my root password. Instead, I am required to logout and log back in as root. Is there a way to make it so that FC13 will prompt me to enter in my root password so I do not need to log in and out? Or is there something Different I should have done during the install process? Also, what is the terminal equivalent of "sudo" in fedora, or is it still sudo/KDEsudo

I also have not used SE Linux before. Do I need to manually enforce the permissions for my applications and generate my own profiles for it, or is that done automatically?

Ubuntu :: Making Shortcuts With Sudo Access?

Mar 8, 2011

Sorry if this is on the forums some where but I couldn't find what I needed, and not even with Google's mighty help. Basically I have a game, called Age of Conquest III, which I got working just fine, but it won't save any setup or game files unless I run it as sudo from the terminal, example in terminal: Sudo /bin/sh "/opt/age_of_conquest_iii/Age of Conquest III" Now I created a short cut with the command being just: /bin/sh "/opt/age_of_conquest_iii/Age of Conquest III"

What command do I put in my shortcut command to get it to open up like in my terminal command? I tried: Sudo /bin/sh "/opt/age_of_conquest_iii/Age of Conquest III" but this won't open anything.

A day ago I finally got around to upgrading the PackageKit installation that had been sitting for a week and a half, so I found a new upgrade for sudo available - the one that gives the sudoreplay command, I forget which version number it is exactly. When I try to use the sudo command I get this notice in my terminal:Code:Can't open /var/db/sudo/me/1: Permission deniedI didn't get it before. What do I have to do to make it open? I'm using SELinux in enforcing mode if that helps.

General :: What's The Difference Between Sudo Su - And Sudo -i

Jun 19, 2011

It is my understanding that they do the same: they ask for my password (if I am allowed in /etc/sudoers), and give me a login shell as root.

Is there any difference between them?

sudo su -
sudo -i

Also, what's the difference between

sudo su
sudo -s

I think that they both ask for my password, and give me a shell with my old environment variables.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: X11 Process Calling Video Freeze?

Jun 26, 2010

I have a strange problem on my MythTV PC: From time to time when I watch TV or a video in VLC the picture freezes but the sound will go on. After some time the picture comes back, first with some ugly artifacts in it and then completely. I've found out by letting htop run in the mean time that during these time CPU usage spikes up to a 100%, I also identified the process causing it (see attached screenshot)

Code:
/usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm:0.Xauth - nolisten tcp vt7"

but I have no idea what it does or why it behaves that way. Can someone fill my gaps here? By the way I'm not running Mythbuntu, but Ubuntu (gnome) with a mythback- and -frontend (don't know whether that's relevant though). I have a nVidia graphics card and a dual screen setup.

Ubuntu :: BASH Quote - Calling Commands Stored In A Variable?

Feb 19, 2010

I am having some weird problems with calling commands stored in a variable (I need to do this to assemble a command with a bunch of parameters automatically and then execute it).Example code that will replicate the weirdness:

$ echo "hello world" > "test file.txt"
$ cat "test file.txt"
hello world

[code]....

I would expect the output to be:

hello world

What happens to the quotes? I have tried various combinations of single quotes, escaped quotes, etc, but it seems like quotes in a variable are not evaluated as quotes when that variable is executed.

Programming :: Tty Is Closed Without Calling Close(?)

I have found a weird behaviour on a linux application. A tty seems to get closed without calling close. The program is (very simplified) as follows:

Process 1:
configure_signals()
read_config_files()
create_threads()
wait(forever)

Thread 1:
fd=open(/dev/ttyXX)
usleep(a while)
config(fd)

I have spent quite a lot of time on this problem. It seems like the file is sometimes closed when reaching config(fd), but removing the usleep(a while) seems to remove the problem.
