I was browsing and then a pop up window came up and all my display got resized randomly for a few seconds. Finally,the lower third of my monitor is total black and useless.The taskbar and dock is still visible at the bottom though but above it is total black.All my compiz settings are gone too!I have tried win7 and everything is fine there.I have tried to adjust monitor settings but nothing changes.

I was playing with Compiz on my netbook and installed Fusion. All was well until I rebooted it and now I am missing all effects and a portion of the screen. I am purged compiz and reinstalled it to no avail. I did mess around with the outputs and changed 640x480+0+0 to 1024x600+0+0 but have no changed it back attempting to fix my issue. I have attached an image of the current situation. Basically, I am trying to get my compiz running again with all its sexiness.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Visio TV that I dropped and cracked the LCD display in one corner, for watching TV it's basically useless now. On a whim I plugged it into one of my computers and about 75% of the screen is still usable. Only the bottom right hand corner of the screen is messed up. What I'd like to do if possible is to define an area of the screen. Say for instance the top left hand corner across and down to where the screen starts getting bad.
Like a left click and drag out the good area and then make only that area "the monitor" for the OS to use. I'd then probably build a case or something to house it in and only show the "live" area to clean things up. I'd like to use Ubuntu. But if you know I can't do it in Linux but can in Windows I'd consider that option as well. I just hate to junk the TV if I can use it some how as a monitor.
I am having a Dell ST2410 LCD and a laptop IBM.I want to span my desktop so that some portion is on laptop and some on external monitor. I tried xdmx but it did not worked.
View 6 Replies View RelatedF13 just installed for me on a server back in the states for me. I VNC into it to setup my personal website. The GNOME menu listings do not have the tool I am familiar with that tells me which process are running, allows me to stop and start them, and to install them I believe if they are on the machine. I can see that MYSQL are on the machine with the Add/Remove tool. I also see myphpAdmin. I need to get both of these up and running. I should be able to do this with out going back to 1980's terminal commands right?

When i logged into a gnome desktop i got this message: "The GNOME session manager was unable to read file:'/home/(desktop name)/ICEauthority'. If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." What commands do i use for that? or do i need to do something else?

When I check fdisk -l, the partition is still 100gb. I have a feeling I resized ONLY the filesystem to 40, but the partition is still 100gb. How do I finish this?

I have a recurring and irritating problem- sometimes when I switch windows using alt+tab, normally when the window that I have switched to is maximised, the window does not get re-painted until it has been resized. The window doesn't "freeze" as such as it still responds to keyboard and mouse events, but it doesn't appear to respond until it is resized.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWell for those following my other thread dealing with net access, I'm now connected...Well that party lasted a minute as my first task was to take advantage of "System>Preferences>Driver Hardware", and fetch me some drivers for my newly built mobo (with on board Nivadia Graphics) & friends...aka; hardware.After uploading the new graphics driver(s) I rebooted to activate....now the screen is sooo BIGGGG that I can't reach any of the normally accessible buttons (like System) to control what occurred.I'm a Linux newbie, having only a few hours on this OS, as yet I don't know how to work around a problem without access to the controlling mechanism. If this were windows I'd just go to START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>DISPLAY and fix it. Right now? I can't even see the start button or anything similar let alone use it!!

my friend was installing ubuntu when he while editing the table from the installation menu, chose to shrink the partition and use it as swap, he didn't realize he was using the actual partition not the 1 to be created as swap.so he ended up with 160 GB swap and 15 GB NTFS partitions.will deleting the partitions and recreating the NTFS partition again restore his data?

Ever since I upgraded to Natty, if I maximize any window or resize it to more than about half the total area of my monitor, the contents of the window go totally blank. I can still see the window's title bar, but there's just a blank white space beneath that. I never had this problem before the upgrade. What do I need to do?
View 2 Replies View Relatedis it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

There is a 300 MB boot partition at /dev/sda1 or (hd0,1).After I got everything set up in openSUSE exactly the way I wanted it, I realized 5GB is way too small for openSUSE KDE, even though ALL data is on another partition.Next step: booted to a live CD (with grub2) and used gparted to remove /dev/sda11 (another 5GB logical partiition), then resized the openSUSE partition (/dev/sda10) to 10GB in gparted.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. I installed Gnome-Do using 'yum install gnome-do'. I opened it from the Terminal by typing 'gnome-do' but I keep getting an error message that says
Could not load desktop item: libgnome-desktop-2.so.17
Gnome-Do opens but it doesn't display any application I search for and when I try opening the Gnome-Do preferences, it quits.
I installed gnome-desktop-2.32.0-8.fc16.i686.rpm from here: [url] and then installed Gnome-Do. Everything works fine now.
I just installed Fedora 15 with the gnome desktop which looks like the android system for mobile phones, I installed wine which put the icons on my desktop but whenever I install a windows app it doesn't put an icon on my desktop for that particular application. How would I add an icon for those window apps so I can lunch them from the desktop, I don't know if you call that the desktop or just the program luncher either way how do I put an icon there so I can run those windows apps from there?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have already done the installation process following the guide on Ubuntu's site, got everything up and running but the partition that I made in the installer was too small. I was then directed by a friend (a slightly less inexperienced newbie) to modify this through Easeus Partition Manager. I shrunk the Windows 7 partition to only the space that was in use, giving the newly unallocated space to the Ubuntu partition. Set the changes and rebooted the computer, then got the message "unknown filesystem, grub rescue". Now have no idea what to do with this. What happened??

The Mrs is not so accurate with the mouse and playing kpatience etc.. she seems to click the top or bottom edge of the maximized window ( as if to drag a card ) but ends up dragging the window, which moves and re-sizes

I have installed fail2ban and it is working great. It is monitoring the auth.log and it's own log. Now here is my question... Every week, my log files rotate, which is just fine for the most part. But this also rotates the fail2ban log and removes any chance of catching a repeated IP from Sunday to Monday. Is it possible to copy a portion of the previous log to the new log?Here is my scenario of what I would like to accomplish, but I am a novice here so please be specific..
logrotate does its job as expected... then a script writes a portion of the previous log to the new log then appends a word/number after that portion (we call this log.1)...next time the log rotates (creating log.2), I want to take the portion of log.1 after the word/number and append it to log.2 along with another word/numberThis will always ensure there is at least 1 week backlog in the logs for fail2ban to track. I don't want to just change the frequency of the log-roll because it doesn't solve the issue of tracking across the log roll
I have a laptop with a cracked screen. the crack is not very serious, about an inch and a half on the right. I can still use my laptop but it is hard to see information in the cracked area.
My question is how can i set up ubuntu not to use that portion of the screen, sort of tricking it into thinking that the display is essentially 1.5 inches shorter on the right than it really is.Perhaps setup x11 differently?

View 5 Replies View Relatedi have an old p3 compqa desktop install 10.04.2 lts on it. install went ok. set to autologin. when it does so, gnome starts but there is no bottom or top menu bar. keyboard shortbut for terminal works and keyboard shortcut alt-f1 for running programs works but i would like to get the top menu bar or at least know a shortbut to get to network preference because i can't seem to get the machine configured for net access...
