Ubuntu Installation :: Window Contents Are Blank When Resized Too Large?
May 13, 2011
I'm obviously having a problem with my onboard video but don't know how to fix it. Ever since I upgraded to Natty, if I maximize any window or resize it to more than about half the total area of my monitor, the contents of the window go totally blank. I can still see the window's title bar, but there's just a blank white space beneath that. I never had this problem before the upgrade. What do I need to do?

I'm currently running Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity. I have a recurring and irritating problem- sometimes when I switch windows using alt+tab, normally when the window that I have switched to is maximised, the window does not get re-painted until it has been resized. The window doesn't "freeze" as such as it still responds to keyboard and mouse events, but it doesn't appear to respond until it is resized.

Just during the last three days, when running Update Manager, clicking Check, downloading all available updates, then Clicking Install Updates, the Downloading Files window pops up but it is blank. and it stays blank. The little rotating icon indicates something's going on but, NO. Nothing has happened, even after a couple of hours. Trying to close Downloading Files brings up a window to Force Quit. Then trying to close Update Manager has no effect. to shorten the story, finally a window pops up saying that the "AT SPI Registry" is not responding. I'm sure trying the same thing will not yield different results. I'm running 10.04.

my friend was installing ubuntu when he while editing the table from the installation menu, chose to shrink the partition and use it as swap, he didn't realize he was using the actual partition not the 1 to be created as swap.so he ended up with 160 GB swap and 15 GB NTFS partitions.will deleting the partitions and recreating the NTFS partition again restore his data?

Anyone know the trick to getting Ubuntu to show the contents of a window while I resize it? It WAS doing this until I loaded up the drivers for my Nividia Quador 135M (works great!) I'm very happy with my Ubuntu 9.10, I even have all the bouncy window effects running.
Still, I would love get rid of the "faded blue resizing box" and see the contents instead.

I am currently trying to copy a directory of roughly 400GBs to dvd, have gotten myself stuck. I tried to tar and then split; however, I don't have enough room on my hard-drive to make a compressed tar and split it up and then burn to disk, so I need a way to tar the and compress the directory, split it, and burn to disk every 4.3GBs.
I went ahead and installed DAR as an alternative, as I hear it is designed for this type of task, but I can't figure out which way is heads or tails.
my OS is the newest version of ubuntu 10.

Recently i had migrated from windows 7 to fedora 15. i have lot of flipbooks with me and unable to open those flipbooks in fedora. finding a suitable solution to open those flipbooks. is there a software to open these books linux. in windows there is no requirement for special softwares to open flipbook, since it is similar to flv or swf files. i had already tried with wine. with wine the file is opened but do not displays the contents or pages, show a blank white screen. @people who dont know about flipbooks: flipbooks are flash objects usually created from pdf files used for reading, flipbooks simulate the reallife book actions(page turning).

I have found a few topics that touch on the problem I'm having but the solution won't work for me.
I am running a 800x480 desktop with Gnome, many windows are cut off at the bottom and I cannot click on the buttons. The standard reply to this problem seems to be hold alt and left click drag the window up.
That works just fine, the twist here is I'm accessing the desktop through a touch-screen (via vnc on an android phone) and I don't have an alt button to hold, dragging is also kind of tough.. I realize it may just be the limitations of my device, but it can't hurt to ask!

On Slackware64 13.37 with a Geforce 6150LE + Nvidia 275.09.07, the contents of a window turn black when I maximize it.
For now I've worked around it by disabling desktop effects.

After finally fixing a problem with screen resolutions on my son's PC, (it was stuck at 640x480), now the Terminal window comes up as blank space. I can still type command lines, but can't see what I'm typing nor the response - it's all a white box

I have just installed kubuntu 10.04 (64 bit) on a moderately new Lenovo R500 laptop (dual-booting with Windows XP).
Problem: several times per working day the screen goes blank. It remains backlit, and I can still hear music or games if they were running beforehand. The only way I have found out of the situation is a full restart.
The problem occurs somewhat randomly, but is usually associated with movement of the mouse. Switching to a new user often causes the problem. Sometimes the screen freezes for 1 second before going blank. I have tried messing with the screensaver settings and the permissions for libusb (which are flagged in the mouse system settings page) without luck.

I have windows 7 on my laptop (Dell Studio model). I have installed fedora 12 onto my machine in the unallocated space, the installation went smoothly. If I login to the fedora directly then every thing works fine. but if I login to Window 7 and again try to re-login into fedora 12 after shutting down the winows 7 then the booting screen will become black (almost invisible) even though I can be able to login and can go to the desktop (which is also very least visible) if i click on suspend and then click on the power button then the screen will become properly visible.

I just updated the kernel to fix nvidia video problem. But now I have problem of no sound. I think it may be unrelated to the upgrade of kernel because most or all of the symptoms were already present, or the upgrade may have complicated things even more. Another recent symptom in conjunction with this problem is that "restart" and "shutdown" from panel dropdown do not work -- they just log out. May or may not be related at all.
Here is link to output of alsa-info.sh: [URL].
I saw this thread about upgrading alsa, but it seems to indicate that later than 2.6.32 kernel not supported (????): [URL]
Here is my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. The last line, "options snd-hda-intel model=basic" was from suggestions I found in other threads.
Code:
# autoloader aliases
install sound-slot-0 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-0
install sound-slot-1 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-1
install sound-slot-2 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-2
install sound-slot-3 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-3
install sound-slot-4 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-4
install sound-slot-5 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-5
install sound-slot-6 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-6
install sound-slot-7 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-7

I have two systems, both running Squeeze, one (desktop) executes Java applications perfectly while the other (laptop) doesn't.
I found two small examples:
http://www.x2d.org/java/projects/fluffschack.jnlp
works well on both systems
[Code]....
All the online Java tests I have found tells me that all is fine. I've browsed around quite a bit, and some are suggesting incompatibilities between Java and certain display drivers, but unsure of how to proceed.

I booted the 11.3 live cd (KDE) and it worked great, so I installed openSUSE. After installation my video acted funny - the screen would occasionally blank when I opened a window, moved or resized a window, etc. It's as if the video driver decided to redraw the entire screen.
So I rebooted the live CD to see what was different and noticed this:
So it seems the 3D driver is an issue. Is there a way I can tell SUSE to just use the swrast 3D driver?

I'm resizing an ext4 partition from 100gb to 40gb (I only used 20gb of it or so). Lets say partition is at /dev/sda1. I used
Code:
efsck -f /dev/sda1
to check it
Then I did
Code:
resize2fs -p /dev/sda1 40G
to resize it
When I check fdisk -l, the partition is still 100gb. I have a feeling I resized ONLY the filesystem to 40, but the partition is still 100gb. How do I finish this?

Well for those following my other thread dealing with net access, I'm now connected...Well that party lasted a minute as my first task was to take advantage of "System>Preferences>Driver Hardware", and fetch me some drivers for my newly built mobo (with on board Nivadia Graphics) & friends...aka; hardware. After uploading the new graphics driver(s) I rebooted to activate....now the screen is sooo BIGGGG that I can't reach any of the normally accessible buttons (like System) to control what occurred.I'm a Linux newbie, having only a few hours on this OS, as yet I don't know how to work around a problem without access to the controlling mechanism. If this were windows I'd just go to START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>DISPLAY and fix it. Right now? I can't even see the start button or anything similar let alone use it!!

I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

I installed openSUSE 11.2 RC1 yesterday. (It was a fresh install.)I installed to a 5 GB logical partition at (hd0,10) which is /dev/sda10. (BTW, that's grub2 numbering). There is a 300 MB boot partition at /dev/sda1 or (hd0,1).After I got everything set up in openSUSE exactly the way I wanted it, I realized 5GB is way too small for openSUSE KDE, even though ALL data is on another partition.Next step: booted to a live CD (with grub2) and used gparted to remove /dev/sda11 (another 5GB logical partiition), then resized the openSUSE partition (/dev/sda10) to 10GB in gparted.

I have already done the installation process following the guide on Ubuntu's site, got everything up and running but the partition that I made in the installer was too small. I was then directed by a friend (a slightly less inexperienced newbie) to modify this through Easeus Partition Manager. I shrunk the Windows 7 partition to only the space that was in use, giving the newly unallocated space to the Ubuntu partition. Set the changes and rebooted the computer, then got the message "unknown filesystem, grub rescue". Now have no idea what to do with this. What happened??
I've been scouring the forums for something helpful but I can't find anything that is a comparable circumstance.I can still access Ubuntu through my flashdrive.

The Mrs is not so accurate with the mouse and playing kpatience etc.. she seems to click the top or bottom edge of the maximized window ( as if to drag a card ) but ends up dragging the window, which moves and re-sizes
I tried it in Gnome and my maximized windows don't drag.
So is there a solution for kde. I guess it's a feature. I had a stab around in systemsettings, but couldn't put my finder on it.

how big and widespaced the fonts on Clementine playlist are and how good they look on the appmenu (where my mouse pointer is). This is not because Clementine is QT4, I've got the same problem with Chrome, Opera etc. I've been messing with system-settings (KDE settings tool) a day before the fonts become that widespaced in order to make my KDE apps look more native on my GNOME, but I haven't touched the fonts settings there.
