CentOS 5 :: GNOME Desktop Drop Down Menu Missing?
Apr 15, 2011After I upgraded from 5.4 to 5.6:
I can see the desktop drop down menu when I log in as user root
however I can not see any of the desktop drop down menus if I log in as regular user

Fedora :: GNOME Tool Missing In Desktop Menu F13?
Aug 22, 2010F13 just installed for me on a server back in the states for me. I VNC into it to setup my personal website. The GNOME menu listings do not have the tool I am familiar with that tells me which process are running, allows me to stop and start them, and to install them I believe if they are on the machine. I can see that MYSQL are on the machine with the Add/Remove tool. I also see myphpAdmin. I need to get both of these up and running. I should be able to do this with out going back to 1980's terminal commands right?

Sep 8, 2011When I right-click on firefox, the menu that appears is sometimes quite long depending on where on the screen I click, and usually the top option dissappears under that top Panel of Gnome shell, so that I have to guess and click on the panel to get an "Open in New Tab" (which is usually my first option.) Is there a way to make it remain within the visible area or something? I'm on Fedora 15 64-bit.

Sep 7, 2010I want to record a streaming-audio (not capture), to use an alarm sound. I opened up gnome-sound-recorder, but I don't see input drop-down menu. I tried Audacity, but it's missing the menu, too.I saw the specification sheet of my laptop, but it only says Mobile Intel� GS45 Express Chipsets, I'm not sure if it manages sound, too, but the sheet doesn't have any information about sound chip set.dd: It seems like I can't change this to 'solved'. I cannot say it is solved, as I don't yet see the drop-down menu in gnome-sound-recorder, but with PulseAudio I can perform the task, so it can be regarded as solved?

Apr 29, 2011i have an old p3 compqa desktop install 10.04.2 lts on it. install went ok. set to autologin. when it does so, gnome starts but there is no bottom or top menu bar. keyboard shortbut for terminal works and keyboard shortcut alt-f1 for running programs works but i would like to get the top menu bar or at least know a shortbut to get to network preference because i can't seem to get the machine configured for net access...

Feb 12, 2011I have a recent install of squeeze. Beside applications from the squeeze repos, I have installed a few applications from their own deb files / repositories, such as Skype, Google-Chrome (not the chromium in the squeeze repos), Opera and Teamviewer.
All those placed their menu entries in the gnome menu, however periodically, at a new login, the Google-Chrome and Teamviewer menu items are missing. The applications are still there, but they dont show anymore in the menus. Only way to get them back I found so far is to reinstall the application.

However, I'm unable to change from one desktop to another - from what I've read, there's meant to be a drop-down menu at the login page allowing you to select the desktop but I don't have one.
I am a beginner with Fedora (mostly used Ubuntu in the past few years, but figure it's time for a change) so I may be missing something obvious.
Not sure it's relevant in this case but specs: Intel Core 2 Duo, ATI 4850, 4gb ram, 320gb HD.

Jun 19, 2010I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

CentOS 5 :: Desktop Environment Missing - GDM Is Failing
Jun 26, 2010I am running CentOS-5x as guest OS in VMware workstation environment. Till, yesterday everything was fine... Today, when i start up I don't see the Desktop coming up, may be the GDM is failing in some way ( guess though). Xserver is working, coz I could see xclock/xyes are loading, also i have checked /etc/inittab, runlevel is set to 5. I did not see any entry in /etc/sysconfig/desktop, thus it shows DESKTOP="" I tried to change it to DESKTOP="GNOME", but it has not worked.

CentOS 5 :: Desktop - No Background Or Menu Bars
Apr 15, 2009i just installed centos 5.3, after the install was complete i decided to remove the productivty apps (word processor, spreadsheet etc). that part went succesfully until i restarted the server. i must have removed something related to the desktop beacause when i log in now, all i get is an analog clock, a console window and a firefox window. no background or menu bars. i attached a screen shot so you can see what i mean because i cant quite describe it.

Jul 28, 2009Sorry if this is in the wrong group but its a bit of an odd one but I think comes under Server Support.. I've set up both x11vnc and freenx in an attempt to eliminate either as a cause for this issue. The problem is that when I log in with either, I can get into the desktop and run things from the menus but when I make the System menu active - the session hangs and you have to killall for the freenx or vnc processes.
I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me investigate this and hopefully fix it as I'm not sure where to look given that both types of remote connection seem to have the same issue.
