Red Hat / Fedora :: Computer Locked Up - X Broken After Restart

Jul 5, 2011

Something happened where my RHEL6 computer locked up and I needed to shutdown the computer manually via holding the power button. When I turn the computer back on all I see is the wallpaper and mouse cursor...no log in window or anything. I can do the alt-shift F1/f2 thing where I can log in via terminal type commands but I cant get the normal display to work. When going init 5 in the console x loads but still nothing but the wallpaper and mouse. When I go back to console it seems to be stuck at enabling bluetooth devices...but I dont believe I even have a bluetooth device.

Fedora :: Update Broke Computer - System Locked Up

Feb 12, 2010

Wednesday I went to work, docked and fired up my older Dell C840 laptop (running Fedora 12). It had a long list of updates that it downloaded and installed (it had been off for about a week). When the updates were finished, I noticed that my laptop had locked up. After waiting a while, I ended up doing a cold reboot. After that, I get the Fedora symbol that fills up, and then the screen goes black with a single cursor. You can type in anything and it is reflected- even control and ALT codes. If you hit CTL- ALT-F2, it goes into a terminal mode. You can do almost anything that you'd normally do in terminal mode. The video driver is the original off the install disk, and it's never been changed- it works fine right out of the box.

If I try to start up X-Windows, I get a segmentation fault error. I've tried deleting and then re-installing some of the packages that were updated (trying this via yum), no difference. I don't know what else to do. I need to get this laptop going before next week- it's my work computer and I do use it a lot. Is there any way to get in touch with the people who wrote the updates, and file a bug report? I'm using my main (home) system right now, that for a couple of reasons needs to stay on windoze XP for a few more weeks. I've been around computers for years, but not Linux.

Fedora :: When Do "start > Computer > System Settings > About Me" And Try To Type In Password Get The Following Error?

Jul 17, 2009

I just installed Fedora 11 (KDE) off of the Live boot CD. I made a really simple password when I was installing, but later I decided to make up a much tougher version of it. When I do "start > computer > system settings > about me" and try to type in my password I get the following error:"BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one passwd:Have exhausted maximum number of retries for service"This is weird because it seems like the system thinks I made three attempts, while I only tried once. Does anyone know what is going on? By the way I don't know why it thinks my password is too similar, It only has 3 of the same letters out of 8 Also, this is my home computer, why does fedora restrict me from a similar password? It should just warn me about it but then let me do it.

Ubuntu :: Waking Up From Suspended State?

Jun 20, 2011

I dual boot both Windows and Linux and I often put my computer to "sleep" at night so it's easy to wake up the next morning. In Windows I just need to press a few keys and my computer comes to life, in Linux this doesn't happen and I have to actually go for the power button. (This wouldn't be so bad if the computer wasn't in a hard to reach place in a cupboard) At the moment I have a USB hub which my keyboard and mouse plug into, but for the sake of testing I plugged a second USB keyboard directly into the machine itself, again neither wake it. Doing a bit of research I have discovered that the wakeup devices are stored in /proc/acpi/wakeup The contents of the file by "cat" are as follows:

Code:

monotoko@KatieIV:~$ cat /proc/acpi/wakeup
DeviceS-state Status Sysfs node
PCE2 S4*disabled pci:0000:00:02.0

[code]...

At this point I have reached a dead end, how do I tell the acpi wakeup to accept input from USB keyboard as a kickstart?

I've been investigating for a while and have found that when halting, the following is done in the /etc/init.d/halt script:

But I don't know which script must be modified in case I want the network not to be brought down when the computer is suspended or hibernated.

Slackware :: Cron Jobs Scheduled To Run But PC Suspended?

By default, cron jobs are scheduled to run at 4:40 IIRC. I have my computer set to suspend after half an hour of inactivity so, except for some all-nighters, pretty much every day at that time my PC is suspended. What happens to the cron jobs? I don't suppose they run while the suspension is in effect. Do they get run when the computer wakes up or does cron wait until the next day at 4:40 to run the jobs?

General :: Explicitly Swap Out Main Memory Of A Suspended Process?

Apr 7, 2010

I run a memory-hungry process (mkcromfs) which consumes more memory than I have physical memory on my latop, so it is paging and swappin and thrashing all the time and loadavg is about 2 (compcache is already in use with usual swap partition as well), but slowly moving forward (Although I afraid it will finally try to allocate >2GB and crash draining 2 days of thrashing).

When I want to use the laptop for something else, I stop the process, start X server, firefox and other programs. The problem is that when I start Firefox the loadavg jumps to 10 and the system becomes almost unresponsive at all (long time to turn on/off caps lock, slow mouse cursor position updates, slow switching from X server to Linux console, slow login).

The stopped mkcromfs still holds a lot of memory (464.8 MiB and slowly falling) and moves it to swap only when more memory is needed for some other program, which results in a great slowdown.

How to tell the Linux to swap out this process entirely (e.g. I'm not intending to resume it in short term), possibly waking from swap other data? Also it will be useful to be able to specify the exact swap device to swap the given process out (for example, mkcromfs's memory is useless in ramzswap).

Update: Now I just write a 400-600M of data from /dev/erandom to tmpfs and it makes mkcromfs to shrink. Is there more proper way?

Ubuntu :: Cannot Remember The Password For The Computer If It Locks

Nov 19, 2010

I am running edubuntu in one of the classes of the school i support. My problem is that the children cannot remember the password for the computer if it locks. I have it set to auto login on the class user and I have disabled the screensaver asking for a password on resume, and disabled the powerdown options. So in theory it should stay on the desktop until they shutdown. However there is still the option to lock the computer and i am sure that they will find it and manage to lock themselves out of the computer! I am a linux beginner, but i have followed a few guides on the internet. I could really do with having their user with no password, so if they accidentally lock the computer they only have to click unlock to resume their computing.

When I do an automatic on wordpress it asks for ftp credentials. I don't my ftp credentials. I was not aware that I had ftp username and password. I am not sure if that means I installed the ftp server without knowing. my root password does not work on this.

I tried searching through wordpress forums but most of them show me how to set the ftp username and password in wp-config file so that it doesn't ask for it every time.

How can I find out the ftp username and password on my computer.
