Apr 12, 2010I seem to have lost/deleted/removed my title bars. This occurs on all applications. Does anybody know how to get them back?

Ubuntu :: Firefox Title Bar And Menu Bar Missing
Jul 5, 2011I am using firefox 5.0 under ubuntu 11.04. I have attached the screenshot of my firefox window. There is no menubar, no title bar, no close, minimize, maximize buttons. I am sure I am not in fullscreen mode.Moving the mouse to the top left corner does not bring out the launcher. Pressing Alt+Tab does not bring out window selection dialog (to switch to another application). I killed firefox from tty1 and restarted firefox. The problem persists.

Nov 24, 2009I just got F12 and installed it on a new hard drive on my Dell Inspiron 1501. I have an AMD 64 x2 and an ATI Express 200M video card. I installed CompizConfig setting manager, which did nothing. I then installed Compiz Fusion Icon. This makes compiz work but once I start it all of my windows are missing the title bar. I'm noob and not a programmer but pretty good and figuring things out.In Emerald Theme Manager I can view available themes select them, edit them, etc. There seems to be no way to apply them. Am I missing something or is it just not working?

Feb 24, 2010After a week or so i noticed that the title bar (the one with the minimise and close buttons) is missing. After a little search i found that in terminal if i type metacity --replace it would come back.And that it did.However, everytime i reboot i need to do it again.Starting to get a little annoying now.

Mar 23, 2011The title bars / window decorations are missing since the last update done about two days ago. I have AMD64 / nvidia 6600 / 2GB / compiz. Latest driver is installed for nvidia and it was working without any problems since 9.04. Now I find that desktop visual effects are selected as 'None' and I am unable to make it 'extra'. Earlier it was set as custom and I had no problems. I have searched the forums and tried many solutions without any success. Now I am running metacity (metacity --replace)with no visual effects, 'compiz --replace' brings back the problem . Is there any way of enabling visual effects // compiz now? Or do I have to re-instal the whole thing

All applications that i start do not have title bars, and the Appearence->visual effect->which was always set to Extra, now boots with None.

Apr 22, 2010when I connected to the L32 HDTV over the HDMI cable, picture came up, and I thought great, plug & play. But the title bar and taskbar were missing and I soon learned that this cheap Vizio TV has a native resolution of 1366x768 and simply upscales and chops off what it considers "overscan" when you drive it at the proper 720p 1280x720. To add to the problems, it doesn't report the correct EDID modes (look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see the probes or install and use the read-edid package) so 1366x768 isn't an option out of the box. I spent days mucking around with /etc/X11/xorg.conf with custom Modelines, strange options and copying confs from other threads, trying to get it working at 1366x768 or 1360x768 or 1368x768 (some variations seem to work for some people)
In the end, I didn't have to touch xorg.conf at all =) All I had to do was install the newer NVIDIA 195 drivers!!! Then you get the lovely Overscan Compensation slider in nvidia-settings, and all is well. First, you will have to apt-get remove the old drivers (probably -185 or -180). Install apt-show-versions for an easy way to do that. I had a bunch of junk, I just removed all packages that had nvidia-someversionnumber in the package name.

May 2, 2010after upgrading from Karmic Koala 9.10 to Lucid Lynx 10.04, i notice something different with title bar on every window opened.
for example:
"Google - Mozilla Firefox" is not at the middle of the window title. and on Lynx it's on the left.
Slackware :: Terminal Xterm Title Is Too Dynamic (title Doesn't Change Manually)
Aug 21, 2010So when I upgraded to Slack64 13.1 on my asus MB homebrewed desktop and Slack 13.1 on my compaq presario a900 laptop, I started having issues with the xterm title (in Terminal--not Konsole) being too dynamic. By "too dynamic" I mean that I can't actually change the title. The dynamic title (from my .bashrc) is basically just pwd. Whenever I try to set the title (via terminal->set title (menu)), I changes it for a split second, and then reverts back to the dynamic title.
This is merely a petty annoyance, so to get around it, I added an xtitle function that I grabed somewhere online (just echos "�33]0;$*�07"). So for nano-ing some file, I'd type:xtitle some_file.txt; nano some_file.txt
That works just fine (kind of annoying to type though). running xtitle alone won't actually change the name either though (I'm pretty sure it's the same command as what terminal does anyway). That is, running: xtitle some_file.txt
changes the title for a split second, and the reverts back to my old pwd.What I really want is to have it dynamically name it "some_file.txt" whenever I use nano, but that appears to be a functionality of zsh (with the preexec() fxn).I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if you have a fix for it.

Changes to xorg.conf file: Firstly, I saved it at 16 color depth with the sudo nvidia-settings and by clicking on the save to xorg.conf file Button. Rebooted computer....... It worked, saved file, and I got the following bugs:
*Cannot move windows by dragging their title bars.
*Cannot see close "X" Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Minimize Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Maximize Button in the title bar.
Went back to 24 bits and problem got resolved. Then i tryed: I did sudo gedit xorg.conf I changed all the 24's with 16's ... Rebooted computer....... It works GOOD... BUT: I got the same bugs from before. I will retype them below

May 8, 2010I'm new to Ubuntu and recently just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid (10.04). However after upgrade, Gnome seems misbehave every time I boot-up my machine.
On every boot, the following problem occur:-
1- Missing Title bar on all window.
2- Mouse pointer display as 'X'.
My current workaround was to set [Appearance Preference] > [Visual Effect] to 'EXTRA' on each boot.
I tried to set Visual Effect to 'NONE' before reboot but no luck. Reseting Gnome to default

rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity
also not helpful.
Is there a way to fix it, say: reinstalling Compiz, Flushing FastBoot or the like.

Sep 16, 2010I am completely new to linux and ubuntu. I burned the .iso of ubuntu to a DVD-R, and put it in my computer and rebooted it. It seemed to be working fine, but then the installation crashed, and I had to manually turn off my computer. So I took out the CD with ubuntu on it, and now my computer won't start! It says "NLDTR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." I can't do anything, because ubuntu never finished installing, and now my windows xp won't run either! It's really scary, if you could offer any advice or help at all, I would appreciate it so much. I'm completely new to this, I'm not even sure if I am posting in the right place.

Oct 31, 2010Stupidly I followed this guide to installing Awn- not noticing that the instructions for removing the panels would bork my system. I have tried the recommended fix code...
If it doesn't work for you, you can always go back by opening up a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and lauching gconf-editor then changing the value above back to gnome-panel. Log out and back in again by using the command sudo service gdm restart in a terminal.
but that didn't work.
In the end I decided to re-install but I still have the same problem. Therefore the problem is somewhere in my config files in /home.
Any thoughts as to how I get this one sorted?

Nov 29, 2010I have version 10.10 installed on both a desktop and a laptop. They are both close in how I setup the themes etc. However on the desktop I notice that I am missing some of the background colors on windows and in some websites. It seems to be anything using a blue/gray color. And it is White. It is noticeable on my Firefox on the laptop the borders around everything is gray, but on the desktop these are white. This seems to be not limited to the browser, as I investigated it is on all apps. I have googled this but cannot find a similar situation. I am also new to Ubuntu/Linux, which adds to my dilemma.

I decided I didn't want to fiddle with it too much to get it working so I uninstalled the ubuntu-netbook package. Mutter was still hanging around though (and lot of other things I assume) so I uninstalled that as well. Now gnome-panel is gone and I don't know how to get it back. Any way to uninstall all those packages and put it back?

May 5, 2011After playing around with Ubuntu Tweaks to remove the "Recent Documents" logging, I somehow ended up losing the icons for "Applications" and "Files & Folders".
I tried lots of different things but the only thing that seemed to sort it was this:
Log out. Log in under Ubuntu Classic (for some reason dropping back to tty with Ctr, Alt and F2 didn't do it). Bring up the terminal and do code...
Log back into Ubuntu (not classic) and hopefully, you should end up with all icons back as they were.
This worked for me but I can't remember if I'd gotten rid of the ".recent-documents.xbel" file in my home folder first, so if all else fails you could try that before you start removing and re-installing Unity.
Fedora Installation :: F14 Gone Missing / What To Get It Back?
Dec 6, 2010I have just installed Fedora 14 on a machine which already has Windows XP on one hard drive and Ubuntu 10.10 on another. Fedora was supposed to be installed alongside Ubuntu
The installation appeared to be successful in that the process came to a natural end and I was told to reboot. However on rebooting I found that the boot menu did not contain an option to choose Fedora and was the same as it had been before I installed Fedora.
I opted to boot Ubuntu and then opened a terminal and typed 'sudo update-grub' and got a message to the effect that grub.conf was being created. When I rebooted again, there was still no sign of Fedora.
Is there any way of getting Fedora to boot? I am not sufficiently experienced in Linux to try anything else as the computer that I am using is not mine and I don't want to wreck the data of the owner. I did do 'sudo fdisk -l' whilst booted in Ubuntu and I saw that there are Linux partitions on both hard drives but I don't know how to tell which is Ubuntu and which is Fedora

Jun 5, 2011just recently, while attempting to boot to windows 7, i happened to select the wrong boot option by mistake, that is the windows 7 recovery (something like that, cant remember it specifically, but the word 'recovery' is there). the option has been there eversince i installed ubuntu 11.04 on my system, of which i cant find the answer as to why it existed there. so once i selected it (which was by mistake), it took me into some recovery process which i abandoned as quickly. it restarted and the windows 7 option was no longer there. the windows 7 recovery option, however, is still there. How to get my windows 7 boot option back?
