Ubuntu :: Gnome-panles Missing / Get That Back?
Oct 31, 2010
Stupidly I followed this guide to installing Awn- not noticing that the instructions for removing the panels would bork my system. I have tried the recommended fix code...
If it doesn't work for you, you can always go back by opening up a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and lauching gconf-editor then changing the value above back to gnome-panel. Log out and back in again by using the command sudo service gdm restart in a terminal.
but that didn't work.
In the end I decided to re-install but I still have the same problem. Therefore the problem is somewhere in my config files in /home.
Any thoughts as to how I get this one sorted?

I installed ubuntu netbook edition on my desktop (from the Ubuntu Software Center) to test out Unity. It looked pretty cool, but every time I went to the sidebar it flashed black. I decided I didn't want to fiddle with it too much to get it working so I uninstalled the ubuntu-netbook package. Mutter was still hanging around though (and lot of other things I assume) so I uninstalled that as well. Now gnome-panel is gone and I don't know how to get it back. Any way to uninstall all those packages and put it back?

Sorry, serious Ubuntu noob here. I was messing with the bar at the top (I think it's called the panel?) And now it's gone. I'm sure there must be someway to get it to show up again.

I'm new to Ubuntu and recently just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid (10.04). However after upgrade, Gnome seems misbehave every time I boot-up my machine.
On every boot, the following problem occur:-
1- Missing Title bar on all window.
2- Mouse pointer display as 'X'.
My current workaround was to set [Appearance Preference] > [Visual Effect] to 'EXTRA' on each boot.
I tried to set Visual Effect to 'NONE' before reboot but no luck. Reseting Gnome to default
Code:
rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity
also not helpful.
Is there a way to fix it, say: reinstalling Compiz, Flushing FastBoot or the like.

I am completely new to linux and ubuntu. I burned the .iso of ubuntu to a DVD-R, and put it in my computer and rebooted it. It seemed to be working fine, but then the installation crashed, and I had to manually turn off my computer. So I took out the CD with ubuntu on it, and now my computer won't start! It says "NLDTR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." I can't do anything, because ubuntu never finished installing, and now my windows xp won't run either! It's really scary, if you could offer any advice or help at all, I would appreciate it so much. I'm completely new to this, I'm not even sure if I am posting in the right place.

I've been using BOINC Manager to run Einstein@Home for about a week now on Ubuntu 10.04
Before I started using it I installed the Cuda 3.0 toolkit driver downloaded off of nVidia's website. BOINC ran flawlessly until today. I don't know what changed, but now the status of my tasks is
"GPU Missing, Ready to Run(1.00 CPUs + 1.00 NVIDIA GPUs)
My card is a Geforce 9800m GTS

I have version 10.10 installed on both a desktop and a laptop. They are both close in how I setup the themes etc. However on the desktop I notice that I am missing some of the background colors on windows and in some websites. It seems to be anything using a blue/gray color. And it is White. It is noticeable on my Firefox on the laptop the borders around everything is gray, but on the desktop these are white. This seems to be not limited to the browser, as I investigated it is on all apps. I have googled this but cannot find a similar situation. I am also new to Ubuntu/Linux, which adds to my dilemma.

After playing around with Ubuntu Tweaks to remove the "Recent Documents" logging, I somehow ended up losing the icons for "Applications" and "Files & Folders".
I tried lots of different things but the only thing that seemed to sort it was this:
Log out. Log in under Ubuntu Classic (for some reason dropping back to tty with Ctr, Alt and F2 didn't do it). Bring up the terminal and do code...
Log back into Ubuntu (not classic) and hopefully, you should end up with all icons back as they were.
This worked for me but I can't remember if I'd gotten rid of the ".recent-documents.xbel" file in my home folder first, so if all else fails you could try that before you start removing and re-installing Unity.

I have just installed Fedora 14 on a machine which already has Windows XP on one hard drive and Ubuntu 10.10 on another. Fedora was supposed to be installed alongside Ubuntu
The installation appeared to be successful in that the process came to a natural end and I was told to reboot. However on rebooting I found that the boot menu did not contain an option to choose Fedora and was the same as it had been before I installed Fedora.
I opted to boot Ubuntu and then opened a terminal and typed 'sudo update-grub' and got a message to the effect that grub.conf was being created. When I rebooted again, there was still no sign of Fedora.
Is there any way of getting Fedora to boot? I am not sufficiently experienced in Linux to try anything else as the computer that I am using is not mine and I don't want to wreck the data of the owner. I did do 'sudo fdisk -l' whilst booted in Ubuntu and I saw that there are Linux partitions on both hard drives but I don't know how to tell which is Ubuntu and which is Fedora

just recently, while attempting to boot to windows 7, i happened to select the wrong boot option by mistake, that is the windows 7 recovery (something like that, cant remember it specifically, but the word 'recovery' is there). the option has been there eversince i installed ubuntu 11.04 on my system, of which i cant find the answer as to why it existed there. so once i selected it (which was by mistake), it took me into some recovery process which i abandoned as quickly. it restarted and the windows 7 option was no longer there. the windows 7 recovery option, however, is still there. How to get my windows 7 boot option back?

I have been a BSD guy for years, but I am now shifting over to CentOS for my first server build.
So far so good, all has been relatively painless and in fact a heck of a lot simpler than I anticipated!
Everything seems to have gone ok except a small problem with Bind. At some point during setup, I accidentally ran "yum remove bind-chroot".
When I tried to run "yum install bind-chroot" I got told "No package bind-chroot available" which was odd.
Anyway, I managed to find the rpm for bind-chroot and installed it that way. Now I see that there is a bind update available
Unfortunately the rpm I installed now has a dependency for the current version of bind which I can see being a headache everytime bind needs updating.
So, can anyone help me get back bind-chroot the proper way? code...

The Volume control and network manager icons are not visible in the notification area..
I sure its has nothing to do with
Add to panel-->Notification area....beacuse the notification area is already there..
but the icons are not visible
the only way that I can make the visible is by typing code...
for volume control.. Only then they become visible in the notification area
Both, the network manager and volume control are mentioned in the "Start-up programs"

Seems that i have totally ****ed up my sony vaio (vgn-fz21z). I've been doing some partitioning and formatting without really knowing what i was doing. Now it is a mess. The vaio comes with pre-installed windows vista, which is no longer installed. I want it to be.Ubuntu 10.4 is installed. In grub I can choose vista but that is only vaio recovery tool. Which is not working. When I try the format cption and take it all back to the original settings, it says that c: is too small or missing.
I also have some cd:s with windows 7 and xp on, but they can't be read. Now the vaio is not even accepting my ubuntu live-cd. I have nothing of importance on the computer, so there would be no problem re-formatting the whole thing. Can it be done? I would prefer is the vaio recovery tool could be left untouched, it has its own partition. I guess I'm asking: is there a way from inside ubuntu to make a total system re-installation, get rid of different partitions and reconstruct c:, so win can be installed again?

I seem to have a major discrepancy between what df reports and what du reports. df tells me that I am using 20G, but I am only able to find 9.5G using du. What follows are the ls -l of root, a df of my system, and the du for every directory in root that is not a symbolic link, mnt, or proc. I would appreciate any suggestions on where to look for the remaining 10.5G that seems to have disappeared.
I am running under VM Player code...

I'm running Sabayon Linux, and recently when through a major upgrade where a lot of packages were upgraded.
After the upgrade, when launching firefox, the back and forward icons are missing. The buttons are actually there, as I can still select an empty grey rectangle. I also checked and it's happening for all users on the system.
I was using the persona's theme, but I stopped using that (for performance reasons). I just disabled it, I haven't actually removed it.
I tried re-installing gnome-icon-theme package from a suggestion on another linuxquestions.org thread, but that didn't help.
It's not a big deal as I can still use the buttons, but curious if anyone has any insight into what I can do to get the icons back.
