Ubuntu :: Firefox 3.6.11 On Karmic - Menus Do Not Appear?
Oct 26, 2010
When I right-click in firefox, or click on a folder on the bookmarks toolbar (which should drop down a menu of bookmarks within that folder), nothing happens.
Clicking on 'File, Edit, View, History...' menus also does not drop down a menu.
Shutting down firefox does not restore menuse, nor does logging out, or even rebooting the machine.
I think that I may be missing tool tips as well.
Firefox version:
Code:
$ firefox --version
Mozilla Firefox 3.6.11, Copyright (c) 1998 - 2010 mozilla.org
Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 9.10
I'm not sure what caused this... I can't think of anything that I've done that might precipitate this, or even exactly when it started.

I have customized the gnome menus. I would like to backup them, to share them with a friend. Wich config file should I backup ? I tried with ~/.config/menus but it didn't worked ... (maybe I did something wrong...).Do you know if there is any file that we can edit with an text editor to configure menus instead of using the application ? The files in .config/menus are quiet obscure :
Quote:
<New>alacarte-made-4/alacarte-made-3</New>
but I don't understand how alacarte-made-x refers to an exact menu...

after a while, all my menus that pop up on Firefox 4 become unstable. When I go to click on the "file", "edit", "view", etc. buttons, they never stay when I go down the list. Also when I right click, the list will not stay either.
This is a bug that needs to be reported, so I am reporting it now. Hopefully we can get this problem fixed in the next update

ubuntu 10.04, ff 3.6.3 with some addons installed.
how to reproduce:
open firefox, download and install some plugins/addons that generate menu entries with an icon in front of them.
e.g. "downthemall" (down them all)
[Code]....
there is however space for these icons in the menu. and I can see icons in the bookmark and history menus. (web page favicons)
these icons improve the usability greatly because they offer a visual guide to the menu not only to the item they belong to but also to other items because I know that the item I want is e.g. one above the green triangle.
I have a slightly impaired vision so this a far greater issue to me than you well sighted folks may think. Just put on some glasses with lots of fingerprints on them and you will see the difference.

When running Firefox 4.0b13pre (2011-02-25) Minefield occasionally and suddenly I can't access any item in a drop-down menu. The menu appears but just disappears when attempting to move the mouse cursor into the drop-down items list. When the problem starts it applies to all menus. The only solution is to close Firefox and reopen when, of course, all is fine until next time. The problem seems to begin entirely randomly and I can't reproduce it at will.

The Update Manager told me to update my Firefox. Now the menus do not appear when I click on "File", "Edit" etc. They do not appear with the short-cut keys (Alt-F etc). Nor do the list boxes unroll for the address bar or to select different search engines.

When Unity is disabled, you can delete a bookmark from Firefox by right-clicking on the bookmark, under the bookmark menu, on the Firefox menu bar. When Unity is enabled, you cannot delete a bookmark from Firefox by right-clicking on the bookmark, since a right-click behaves the same way a left-click does. In other words, there doesn't appear to be any context menus.I reverted to the so-called "Classic desktop." There are other aspects about Unity I take issue with, but I will not go into them here.
If the Unity desktop is to be the default desktop for Ubuntu, then it must retain, at a minimum, mind you, the same functionality that was provided by the prior desktop. Access to an application's context menus is one functionality I see no good reason to forgo.

This has been happening sporadically over the past month. I thought it was a problem with 10.04, so I upgraded to 11.04 and it is still occurring.I can't seem to pin down a cause or something that I do to make this happen.Every so often, I will lose the ability to see right click context menus and I am unable to click on the menu buttons. Rather, I can click on the menu names (file, etc), but no menu comes down. I cannot use the keyboard to bring down the menu (alt-f, etc), but I can use keyboard shortcuts to do specific actions (ctrl-t, etc).I was using Firefox 3.6 and now I am using 4 and it is still occurring.

I'm running 10.04 w/ Firefox 3.6.
Often, and esp after adding something with apt-get or Synaptics I find Firefox will lose the ability to display either pull down menus or a menu from a mouse's right button.
I've been doing some initial searches for a bug report on Launchpad (but it is unclear if it is being used to actively track bugs vs some other place).
My 'hit it with a hammer' approach to a fix, at least to this point, is to reinstall from the local store or cache, the application;
Synaptic
Status Filter
Firefox (in the Quick Search field)
Mark the existing Firefox for Reinstallation
No files get downloaded, but a restart of Firefox and 'tada'; menus return.

I'm using Firefox 3.6.10 for Ubuntu 10.10 with the smooth-scaling ppa (only addons I'm using are Firebug and the Ubuntu modifications pack).Several sites with navigation menus the menu is spread over two lines when it obviously shouldn't be (eg. The Telegraph online, BBC News...) this happens no matter what the zoom level is set to. Chromium renders all these pages normally.

Somehow I manged to mess up my firefox menu fonts.I'm running ubuntu 10.04, updated as of this posting's date. Please see the attached picture of FF (ugly, thin, menu font) alongside OpenOffice (normal menu font) on the same gnome desktop. Interestingly, FF looks little better on the screenshot than it does on my monitor. Something is seriously wrong.
Symptoms:It is only the FF menus that are affected, not the content of the pages that load, or the menu I get when I click on the window title bar (Maximise, Minimise .... Close)
No other applications are affected - all their menus are normal.
No other users are affected - their FF has normal menu fonts. So I am thinking it has to be some file in ~ that is messing this up.
I liked KDE3, but it seems that is history now, and KDE4 is not for me, so I moved to gnome. I am still getting used to it, but it's functional. All was well until I installed the KDE4 desktop, because I thought I'd "give it another try". I logged into KDE4 and ran it under my own username. I managed to open firefox, but that was about it. I logged out because although KDE4 is pretty, it's still useless for my needs. So I went back to gnome, and that's when the problem with FF first appeared. My mouse-pointer cursor has also changed. Instead of a "clockface" spinning when something is waiting, I now have two small circles orbiting an invisible point. No big deal, though it might be relevant.

Whenever I want (for example) save a file from the internet with Firefox, I can't because Firefox does not open the "save as" window of Dolphin. Also, when I want to save my bookmarks in Firefox, I can't because Firefox can not open the "save as..." window.
There is no failure message, no crash, just nothing. Like as the request is simply ignored. Any Ideas what might be wrong in my system? The system is OpenSuse 11.3 64 Bit with KDE 4.6 and all current updates.

This is a problem I had in Ubuntu some years ago that just seemed to go away; sporadically I will want to select a website by positioning the cursor over the drop-down arrow to the right side of the url box- after the list is displayed it will vanish immediately when I attempt to position the cursor over it to make a selection. Minimizing then maximizing Firefox resolves it.
A minor problem yes - but it would be nice to not have to deal with it.

where to go for updates to mozilla stuff after Karmic support ends would be welcome. Karmic is where I want to stop with this old portable, I could keep it running securely enough online. For that I need the Firefox/NoScript combo.

It's happened twice recently, once in Karmic while in Firefox, and now in Lucid while in Gedit. The mouse becomes unresponsive to clicks, but when moved the pointer highlights the portion of the screen it moves across. Both times I had to alt+sysreq R-E-I-S-U-B to recover, but in hindsight I think I could've simply ctrl+alt+del and let it count down the 60 seconds to shut down the system. I'm curious as to what could be causing this and what I may try to prevent it in the future.

i've seen several posts on other forums about problems similar to this but no solutions that apply to me. i've got the latest updates for karmic that i installed this week. i'm using an ibm t60 thinkpad with 01:00.0 vga compatible controller: ati technologies inc m52 [mobility radeon x1300]. i have dual monitors and firefox 3.5.8.
when i attempt to watch a movie on hulu, it appears to work for a brief moment and then freezes and the browser window goes grey. i've left it sitting like that for over 15 minutes and eventually had to force quit it.i'm able to use the gnome desktop effects and have no problems viewing other multimedia, like videos, etc. i'm very new to ubuntu and linux in general. i'm a mac head and still love mac's but have grown very fond of ubuntu in a short amount of time.

I've been going through the Comprehensive multimedia and video howto a couple of times and never get streaming going. When testing on the Apple trailers site and this here I don't get it to work. I tried both streaming options set in the thread, (a) Gecko Media Player and (b) MPlayer Plug-in (removing the other one in between) and am getting very annoyed. Currently have option (a) installed.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala with Firefox 3.5.8 and the Synaptic touch pad driver for laptops. The problem occurs no matter if I choose to reinstall Firefox or the driver, a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10, or a combination of them. As I browse through Firefox, on no certain, but continually occurring occasion my mouse cursor distorts as I hover over links.
The distortion look as if the cursor is rapidly alternating between its normal state and the link hovering state. The thing is, this happens so rapidly it can become distracting and even downright maddening, as it sometimes doesn't click the link. The best term for the oddity is: it freaks out; it goes crazy. This has happened on various themes and preference settings, so it apparently has nothing to do with that. It does not happen anywhere else apart from Firefox, as far as I know. I think this is a generic Ubuntu-Firefox bug, but I have not been able to retrieve a solution.

This morning my Karmic desktop stopped connecting to the internet (Firefox & Evolution). Network is all ok and other machines can connect fine - in fact I am typing this from a Windows 7 virtualbox running on the offending machine. Investigation shows that this is definitely a DNS problem as I can connect to sites / mailservers by using the ip address. Have tried several reboots which did not help. PowerDNS is installed. When I restart it the ff output is send to syslog:

Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick on my HP notebook (Intel core2 CPU T5600@1.83GHZ)
I facing lot of initial hiccups in using Ubuntu as i came from Win XP.
I am not able to see any menus in the home screen. No right click is available on desktop. While searching in forum, I came to know that there will be menu in the desktop. and also run option(Alt+F2 or so). But I don't have any menu except top bar with Ubuntu Logo and status bar and Launcher Bar. Alt+F2 is not working.
I am trying windows kind of desktop/menus/look and feel. I installed Cairo-Dock. which has menu item "application menu". But it seems my system struck due to this.
I have another system with XP OS. Both are in same lan. Inorder to communicate between both I tried xipmsg. I cant find the application under applications launcher. From terminal if i give this command, small gui is opened. where there are no users found . also printing this error at closing. "XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0". after 1844 requests (1844 known processed) with 0 events remaining."
Then I installed ipmsg for windows using WINE. Its giving 3 errors in the startup and my system name only available in the users list . When I press Refresh, that name also vanishes. Then I installed Genome IPmsngr, where I could not find single entry similar to xipmsngr. sometimesstatus icons of LAN/wireless & ipmsngr coming out of status bar and showing below the status bar.
Also getting following errors while hibernate. btusb bulk complete: hci0 urb efdc5280 failed to resubmit(1).

When menus in gnome are too long to fit on screen, there appear two arrows in the menu, one at the top and one at the bottom. When I hover over the down arrow, it starts scrolling, but when I then try to click on one of the items, it jumps back to the original position as soon as the cursor leaves the down arrow.
This is very annoying, as I can't reach all entries in for example my preferences menu. Is there a workaround for this?

My son and I both have Acer AO532h netbooks, his is still running UNR 10.04 but I've "upgraded" to UNR 10.10 (quotes because it's caused a fair bit of hassle and I'm not sure the launcher is an improvement). We both installed Freeciv this morning. I was able to find in forums how to get it to behave on a 1024x600 screen using (Game > Local > Options > Interface > "Arrange widgets for small displays") but was only able to get this to work on the 10.04 install.
On my 10.10 UNR install, freeciv client has NO MENUS. Mine is freeciv 2.2.1, and once started, the client window only shows "File" menu, and its only item is "Close". His install is 2.1.10 on UNR 10.04 and he's playing away with the above setting changed. I will now try to figure out how to regress to freeciv 2.1.10.

I updated my Ubuntu 10.10 yesterday with Synaptic but didn't reboot until this morning. I can log in normally but that's it. I get a nearly blank screen with my selected wallpaper. There is no menu bar at the top of the screen (Menus for Application, System, etc; clock, cpu load, weather, network applets) and no taskbar at the bottom of the screen. I was able to get Firefox going by opening the one icon I had for an automatically mounted filesystem and going to "Get Help Online" in the Help menu. I can do little else. If I right-click on the screen, I get the menu to make folder, make document (which works), but the change background item doesn't run.
I can't switch to a terminal with Ctl-Alt-F7 and I can't see any way to open a terminal in Gnome without the Application menu.

I installed 11.04 last night and, when I found that I was having a tough time working with unity I tried to follow some of the online advice and revert to the classic desktop.
Unfortunately when I logged out, the login screen didn't have the expected menu allowing me to choose between unity and classic gnome. Then I made a big mistake. I logged in and opened the system settings menu from the drop down menu in the top right hand side of the screen (at the foot of the menu listing logout, shutdown, hibernate etc.). In there I found an option allowing me to choose my desktop environment at login. Instead of choosing Gnome, like an idiot I chose 'user defined' as my preferred environment, hoping it would allow me to choose between unity and classic at login so that i could get used to unity gently.
Now that I've restarted I'm left without any menu at all anywhere. The only way I've been able to get access to firefox is by creating a launcher on the desktop, I can't open a terminal and I'm such a ubuntu newbie that I can't think of what else to try.
All my usual files are there on the desktop, just nothing giving me access to any programmes or options.
