Ubuntu :: No Menus Anywhere On Desktop
Apr 29, 2011
I installed 11.04 last night and, when I found that I was having a tough time working with unity I tried to follow some of the online advice and revert to the classic desktop.
Unfortunately when I logged out, the login screen didn't have the expected menu allowing me to choose between unity and classic gnome. Then I made a big mistake. I logged in and opened the system settings menu from the drop down menu in the top right hand side of the screen (at the foot of the menu listing logout, shutdown, hibernate etc.). In there I found an option allowing me to choose my desktop environment at login. Instead of choosing Gnome, like an idiot I chose 'user defined' as my preferred environment, hoping it would allow me to choose between unity and classic at login so that i could get used to unity gently.
Now that I've restarted I'm left without any menu at all anywhere. The only way I've been able to get access to firefox is by creating a launcher on the desktop, I can't open a terminal and I'm such a ubuntu newbie that I can't think of what else to try.
All my usual files are there on the desktop, just nothing giving me access to any programmes or options.

How do I rearrange or otherwise customize the desktop menus and icons in the Netbook Remix? For example, I wish to combine the System Tools and System menus, and I want to rearrange the icons in the Favourites menu. There is no Control Panel (that I can find) which will let me do this.

I have 2 machines running under Lucid Lynx (one a 32-bit laptop, the other a 64-bit desktop). I created on both an account for my wife, and she wants a french environment. Now, when I installed the language packs (using Language Support from System), and I logged into her account for the first time, I selected "language = french" on the login screen, and on the desktop, there was a popup window asking me whether I wanted to translate the desktop menus to french. I said yes, and that happened. However, I did more or less the same thing on the laptop, and although the keyboard is french, and the date and so on is french, I didn't get this popup window asking for a menu translation. Changing the login language, and then changing again to french, didn't trigger this.
Is there a way (command line ?) to trigger this automatic menu translation tool?I think that the language packs are all installed.

I've been using Ubuntu for several years, and wanted to try the netbook remix on my old Acer Aspire 5050 laptop.
I tried to install and switch from desktop 10.10 to netbook 10.10, and the home page and menus didn't display properly. I took this as being due to some conflict with an exiting bit of software (I use it as a LAMP server and dev machine, so it had a lot of stuff one it). Keen to try the netbook edition, and clean down my laptop, I installed in from scratch, formatting the HDD etc.
Anyway, the issue is still the same.
It is quite hard to describe what is displayed. The left menu is just empty, with no icons. The top bar is also empty. When you mouse over the left menu, blank pop-outs appear. Also, some icons are blank or mangled. Occasionally, when I close a dialogue, or do an alt-tab, the left menu icons appear, but only for a split second.
Anyway, screen dumps (reduced to half size) will explain this better, so here are a couple...
Top and left menus showing as empty semi transparent bars.
Same with an app running
with mouse over a left menu item, and a blank pop-out with black surround. code...

I'm experiencing a two or three problems with (I think) the Unity desk top. I'm not sure they're related so I'll post them as separate threads. Here's the second.
When I boot up Ubuntu the initial desktop related menus, which should appear at the left hand side of the top menu bar, are not visible until after I've launched and then minimised an application (doesn't appear to matter which application). Once I've done that the menus reappear.

I've basically gone and messed up my entire desktop. The curious (idiotic) me was experimenting with the desktop, and went and somehow deleted all the panels. After 3 days of frustration, I've been unable to recover any form of menu or panel. So far, I've tried restoring the defaults from the terminal. Unfortunately, I can't open a terminal window. I can run it using Ctrl+Alt+F2, but it refuses to open any windows or run any programs. Most commands give me some form of 'cannot open display.' I can't minimize windows without losing them so my workspace is a mess, I can't run nautilus as root so I can't access Synaptic, and the list basically goes on and on.

Recently I have upgraded from Fedora 13 to Fedora 14 using preupgrade. Everything is working fine except menus on Gnome desktop. Sometimes menus are not cleared. They just hang on the desktop infinitely.

I am using Wheezy 7.9, Gnome Classic, gdm3 . I have two menu instances of Master PDF Editor, one instance in the Graphics menu and the other in the Office category. I have tried using Alacarte to remove one of the instances. Alacarte shows that the item has been removed but in fact it still shows up in the menu. The procedure I used was to open Alacarte as root user, delete the item, close Alacarte and re-start the computer.

Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick on my HP notebook (Intel core2 CPU T5600@1.83GHZ)
I facing lot of initial hiccups in using Ubuntu as i came from Win XP.
I am not able to see any menus in the home screen. No right click is available on desktop. While searching in forum, I came to know that there will be menu in the desktop. and also run option(Alt+F2 or so). But I don't have any menu except top bar with Ubuntu Logo and status bar and Launcher Bar. Alt+F2 is not working.
I am trying windows kind of desktop/menus/look and feel. I installed Cairo-Dock. which has menu item "application menu". But it seems my system struck due to this.
I have another system with XP OS. Both are in same lan. Inorder to communicate between both I tried xipmsg. I cant find the application under applications launcher. From terminal if i give this command, small gui is opened. where there are no users found . also printing this error at closing. "XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0". after 1844 requests (1844 known processed) with 0 events remaining."
Then I installed ipmsg for windows using WINE. Its giving 3 errors in the startup and my system name only available in the users list . When I press Refresh, that name also vanishes. Then I installed Genome IPmsngr, where I could not find single entry similar to xipmsngr. sometimesstatus icons of LAN/wireless & ipmsngr coming out of status bar and showing below the status bar.
Also getting following errors while hibernate. btusb bulk complete: hci0 urb efdc5280 failed to resubmit(1).

When menus in gnome are too long to fit on screen, there appear two arrows in the menu, one at the top and one at the bottom. When I hover over the down arrow, it starts scrolling, but when I then try to click on one of the items, it jumps back to the original position as soon as the cursor leaves the down arrow.
This is very annoying, as I can't reach all entries in for example my preferences menu. Is there a workaround for this?

My son and I both have Acer AO532h netbooks, his is still running UNR 10.04 but I've "upgraded" to UNR 10.10 (quotes because it's caused a fair bit of hassle and I'm not sure the launcher is an improvement). We both installed Freeciv this morning. I was able to find in forums how to get it to behave on a 1024x600 screen using (Game > Local > Options > Interface > "Arrange widgets for small displays") but was only able to get this to work on the 10.04 install.
On my 10.10 UNR install, freeciv client has NO MENUS. Mine is freeciv 2.2.1, and once started, the client window only shows "File" menu, and its only item is "Close". His install is 2.1.10 on UNR 10.04 and he's playing away with the above setting changed. I will now try to figure out how to regress to freeciv 2.1.10.

I updated my Ubuntu 10.10 yesterday with Synaptic but didn't reboot until this morning. I can log in normally but that's it. I get a nearly blank screen with my selected wallpaper. There is no menu bar at the top of the screen (Menus for Application, System, etc; clock, cpu load, weather, network applets) and no taskbar at the bottom of the screen. I was able to get Firefox going by opening the one icon I had for an automatically mounted filesystem and going to "Get Help Online" in the Help menu. I can do little else. If I right-click on the screen, I get the menu to make folder, make document (which works), but the change background item doesn't run.
I can't switch to a terminal with Ctl-Alt-F7 and I can't see any way to open a terminal in Gnome without the Application menu.

On my desktop, running 9.10 64 bit, when I start up, I get the error message
"cannot update ICEauthoriy /home/local" and after I hit ok to go beyond that, my taskbar and menus flash, then disappear. I get to my desktop, but have no functionality. I installed klamav yesterday, and got this on my next startup. Is there any way to save my installation, and not have to re-install the O/S.

9.10 Karmic on two different computers. Medibuntu restricted stuff installed. Both computers play some DVD's, but some give following errors:
Kaffeine:
Code:
Cannot find input plugin for MRL [dvd:/]
Totem:
Code:
Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file.
Both players will play the individual files (discs are browsable) but will not open the menu. VLC opens the menu but you can't click it.

Although have heard allot about Linux. I made the mistake of setting the top menu bar to show down the bottom and also to auto hide. I also set the bottom bar to auto hide as well. Now When I mouse over I'm unable to get the menus up. Just flashing between both menus. If that makes sense. Anyway to get the preferences up for those bars? The menu and taskbar thing?

Prior to 10.04 there was a preference for menus which allowed you to remove or position the text in menus. I can't find that option in 10.04 nor can I find this parameter in the Configuration Editor. I wish to only have icons in the menu bars of applications.

Using UNR10.04 and have an issue where menu screens are hanging off the bottom of the screen. Happens pretty regularly, but for example, a moment ago, I was trying to switch to Google Public DNS, in the network preferences, have to click apply/ok but cannot do so as the menu box is larger than the screen. Is there a way to scroll down or make the window smaller so that I can click buttons outside standard screen.

When I right-click in firefox, or click on a folder on the bookmarks toolbar (which should drop down a menu of bookmarks within that folder), nothing happens.
Clicking on 'File, Edit, View, History...' menus also does not drop down a menu.
Shutting down firefox does not restore menuse, nor does logging out, or even rebooting the machine.
I think that I may be missing tool tips as well.
Firefox version:
Code:
$ firefox --version
Mozilla Firefox 3.6.11, Copyright (c) 1998 - 2010 mozilla.org
Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 9.10
I'm not sure what caused this... I can't think of anything that I've done that might precipitate this, or even exactly when it started.

I am getting an annoying intermittent problem with my desktop/X. When I invoke popup menus (usually my cairo main menu from AWN) I get bits of it left over. This stays on top of any other window I open, but if I was to drag desktop icon over it, the image of that would replace it, this is also true for tooltips. If I open and shut the menu it eventually disappears but the timing of this is random also.

after a while, all my menus that pop up on Firefox 4 become unstable. When I go to click on the "file", "edit", "view", etc. buttons, they never stay when I go down the list. Also when I right click, the list will not stay either.
This is a bug that needs to be reported, so I am reporting it now. Hopefully we can get this problem fixed in the next update
