Ubuntu Networking :: DNS Died - Karmic Desktop Stopped Connecting To The Internet (Firefox & Evolution)
Apr 1, 2010
This morning my Karmic desktop stopped connecting to the internet (Firefox & Evolution). Network is all ok and other machines can connect fine - in fact I am typing this from a Windows 7 virtualbox running on the offending machine. Investigation shows that this is definitely a DNS problem as I can connect to sites / mailservers by using the ip address. Have tried several reboots which did not help. PowerDNS is installed. When I restart it the ff output is send to syslog:

I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday. When I see the network tab, it shows it is connected to the web via eth0. I could download all the packages for updates. But when I try to connect to internet via Firefox, or by evolution or other software,I am unable to connect. The configuration of the ethernet card is proper as I checked that via terminal window. It is a peculiar problem, where I can download update pakages but unable to connect via browser or email client.when I ping to ubuntu.com is shows it is healthy and successful.I have a Acer dual core laptop, and connect to internet via wired lan .

I have a wireless router, but my desktop computer is connecting to it, or maybe to the modem, by an Ethernet cable. It has a built-in wireless card, so just as an experiment, I tried to connect to my network wirelessly. It didn't work. And not only did I not get any internet connection, I can't get any internet through the wired connection either. The internet works fine with Windows Vista (I'm dual-booting), as well as when I boot up Backtrack off of a Live DVD. I can still access my router's config page by going to 192.168.2.1 on a web browser, but I can't access anything else.

I have a laptop with win7 and I would like to connect to the internet through my desktop pc's connection. I have Karmic on the desktop and use a cable modem and I'm thinking about buying a router to solve this problem but I wouldn't know how to set it up in Ubuntu nor which router would be the best or easiest to set up. I saw this site [URL] and I'm torn between the TP-Link TL-WR741ND Wireless Lite N Router and the D-Link Wireless N Router DIR-615, because these are the cheapest ones and I can't afford much more than that.

I have an old desktop computer that I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on. I also have a laptop with Windows 7 Pro which is connected wirelessly to the internet. The desktop does not have a wireless card and the modem is in another room. I have a spare ethernet cable, is it possible to connect the Ubuntu desktop to the internet by connecting it to the laptop with the cable? I'm not very good with computers. If this isn't possible, how would I go about connecting the desktop to the internet?

I have chrome an it works fine, but firefox wont load any pages, just white and blank. For Chrome I have been using putty and a plugin called switchy to use internet through another computer and may have messed firefox up when trying to install a similar plugin. I uninstalled all plugins and still had the problem. I then tried:
sudo apt-get remove --purge firefox
and then re downloaded the new firefox 4.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04. Prior to this I had been using Ubuntu 9.10. In 10.04 I am just unable to connect to the net using Mozilla FireFox. But otherwise, Update Manager, Google Chromium are all connecting smoothly. Which implies that there is nothing wrong with my internet connection. So now that this is a Mozilla FireFox problem.

Today my wireless has stopped working. I have a laptop hp6720s with network controller: Intel corporation PRO/Wireless 3945 ABG [Golan] Network connection (rev 02), dual boot vista/ubuntu 9.10, fully updated (kernel 2.6.31-17). I use a router edimax BR-6204 wg to use the net with other laptop. Till now i have using wicd for controll wireless without any problem, internet was quick and responsive. (Quick connection without any failure).
But today the internet was very slow and wireless starts to connect and disconnects intermitently, doing it unusable. This was what occured when i upgraded from jaunty to karmic and used the network manager from gnome, but then i fix the problem installing wicd. Now wicd behaves in the same way as gnome-network-manager. If i connect directly the computer to the router by wire, i have internet and everything works perfectly. How i can fix the wireless?. How i can do it works with ubuntu 9.10 and?.

I don't know why but show Desktop Ctrl-Alt-D suddenly stopped working for Firefox only (in all workspaces).
Any ideas what might have caused this? Any work-arounds? (apart from Ctrl-Alt-(arrow) / switching to a different workspace - which is a fair workaround)

I have been messing around with Ubuntu on an old PC I have and I really like it so I wanted to dualboot the family PC with Vista and Ubuntu to see if I could also convert my parents into linux lovers too. I got ubuntu installed on a seperate partition and everything boots fine, but when I'm in Ubuntu, it won't connect through our wired internet but if I'm in Vista, the internet is fine. I really want to start using Ubuntu on this computer but there is virtually nothing I can do in Ubuntu without the internet working. I also posted on ubuntuforums but they have only asked me to get them a bunch of codes from the terminal, that unfortunately I can't read.. but maybe some of you may know whats going on. [URL] This is the link to the other forum with all the information. The computer is a Gateway GT5622 with a Integrated Realtek 8111B 10/100 Mbps Ethernet LAN.

I have Jaunty 9.04 and I was sitting online yesterday and the update manager came up. I let it do its thing as usual, but it seemed to have an issue with some firefox related package (having to do with branding?) and then the little flipping-out icon showed up in my tray saying that a package broke. It did not, and the firefox launcher turned into a missing puzzle brick and clicking it causes a small window to come up with the following message:
XML Parsing Error: undefined entity
Location: chrome://browser/content/browser.xul
Line Number 31, Column 1:<window id="main-window"
^
So I might have tried to uninstall firefox from synaptic or something, but this just created more errors and I don't think it worked properly anyway. Inside Synaptic, there is one listed as a "broken" package in the broken filter. It is something to do with Firefox Branding AMD64 and all that goodness.

I'm using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx on a MSI Wind U100 Netbook, and most of the time (say 9 times over 10), my computer can't connect to Internet, be it with an ethernet cable or wifi. I have heard of similar problems with Ubuntu Karmic and kernel 2.6.27, but mine is 2.6.32, so I didn't try the solutions I've found across the web, fearing to break more than anything else.
What I can say is that before running Lucid, the netbook was running Hardy, and ethernet used to work fine whereas WiFi absolutely not (but I didn't try too hard to make it work).

I have a problem which is connecting automatically to my spwireless. On my windows, my schools provide me the disc which contains several .cer files and a automated batch files to copy the .cer files to the root folders. I can choose to use the other network but in using that, i have to manually connect compared to using the spwireless. Anyway, my problem is that, how do i add the .cer files and to where so when i connect to the network it will look there for the cert. Because when i manually connect, only one cer can be chosen.

I had shut down my laptop at work last week and when I booted it up the wired internet connect was not working. The wireless connection is working (I'm typing now via wireless).I have WinXP Pro on this machine (but I've never used it--I'm all Linux now). So I booted into WinXP and turned off the wireless and got internet connection through the ethernet cable, so it doesn't seem to be the cable or my ethernet card. Here is the output of "ifconfig"
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1c:25:7a:fa:b6
inet addr:xxx.xxx.xxx.xx Bcast:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Mask:255.255.255.0

I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

After trialling ubuntu on my home comp, and getting brilliant results, i've now migrated my work computer too. Now, i can't connect to the internet or office network. I'm on a small office wired network. When i was on XP all the settings were on 'utomatic' - didn't need to input an IP, DNS, subnet etc. Now i Can't even ping the router.I've browsed around various other threads and can't find a working solution. I've tried inputting various settings in ubuntu connection settings, but still cannot get it working. (was hoping it would be automatic, as it was on my home comp).
