Update manager freezes when updating. I recently tried installing tor manually through wget and then gpg, as per the instructions on the website. My update manger now freezes at file 50/51, and in terminal, at [99%] Waiting for headers.... I just finished the update manager, it fails to retrieve the package then times out. Partially completes update after that.
View 1 RepliesI'm running 10.04 LTS, Lucid Lynx 64 bit. Kernel: 2.6.32-21-generic on an hp touchsmart tm2t.The issue here is this: The update manager starts and has a list of updates. I click "Install Updates" and it asks for my password. I type it in and then a window with the title "Downloading Package Files" appears, but no content is displayed in the window. It hangs here indefinitely. When I go to restart or shut down, it tells me that the program "AT SPI Registry" is not responding.The workaround I found was to simply do it from the command line ('sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade') however there are still updates that show up in the Update Manager and it looks like some of the updates are to the kernel itself.

The window goes blank, and I have to use xkill to get out of it. I'm able to update my system using apt-get upgrade just fine, but I would still rather have my update manager running. I'm using Ubuntu version 9.10.

It make sit unusable. Also it doesn't support the dual scrolling feature that came with the computer. Whenever I put more than one finger on the touch pad the cursor goes wild.

I tried to upgrade to Lucid Linx while in Karmic Koala but the installation process froze while doing something with "memtest86+". CTRL-C got it to unfreeze and finish the installation but on a restart when I chose the Ubuntu OS it kept restarting rather than booting. I decided to start fresh.
So I booted into Vista and uninstalled Wubi Karmic Koala and proceeded to do a fresh install of Wubi Lucid Lynx. The installation, including the reboot, went smoothly. However, when the Update Manager was installing software a new screen popped up saying this:

So I leave the checkbox unchecked and click on forward. Nothing happens. All the Update Manager windows remain the same and nothing changes when I hit the Forward button. The "Applying Changes" window is stuck at "Setting up grub-pc (1.98-1ubuntu6) ...".
Can I safely force quit the Update Manager installation? Why am I getting that message about Grub? I didn't choose anything like that.
I am a new user of ubuntu and have found that the Update Manager freezes when I press Install Updates button. what to do next as I am way behind with the updates.

Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit I have not been able to update using the update manager or by using the package manager. It seems when the update manager tries to download all the requests fail.Anyone else had this problem??

When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . Software center, update manager, Synaptic package manager crashes for no reason. I have not done any recent changes or downloads. I'm running a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10-64bit I don't have Hardware Manager, Update Manager or Software Resources just to name a few.I tried sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get upgrade & everything is up to date.

I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.

I have looked elsewhere for an answer and some others have had similar problems, but I have not found a reason for it happening, nor an answer. I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have been using Ubuntu for several months, can use the Terminal if I have the right commands to issue, but beyond that have limited knowledge of the system.
As the title says i updated my system which then needed a reboot. I also installed Mixxx djing software to try it out. So i thought id just restart the system. Usually when i boot into my desktop wireless automatically can connect to my router but not this time, wired only for now... i know theres tons of wireless issue threads but some more experienced users will be able to get straight to the point and run through some diagnostics with me.

However my current kernel has been updated a while ago and is now 2.6.31-17. That obviously is more recent that that backport version. What should i do? By the way that update is from a PPA repository other that the default. I am wondering the update manager has no way to tell which kernel version i have at all? Should i actually go ahead with the installation?

After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.
