I just came back from a meeting with someone wo wants this functionality:When he saves a file on *his* machine, it will automatically get copied onto a server (this is on an office LAN). This is so if there's a virus attack on his machine, he will have an uninfected backup copy.
To make matters worse, the client machines will be WINDOZE. Apparently he's seen this kind of functionality at an office somewhere (he was saying something about "Microsoft" , but my brain has erased that part of the conversation ), and now wants it for himself.
I was thinking about Samba obviously, but the tricky part is doing the copying when the user *saves* a file. This will require hooks into the OS to see when a file is being saved.*If* I manage to persuade him to switch his client machines to Linux (which would be the ideal choice and make life far easier), how would it be done? I'd have to use the File Alteration MOnitor in the kernel, right?Would it be possible to write the copying code in a shell script?
Non-root user cannot launch "shortcuts" (sorry I grew up on windows, don't know the right term) from the file manager or plasma desktop manager.They have full permissions to the shortcuts, even ones they create do not work.If I log in with root permissions they work fine

1 week ago I updated my box, and after the reboot and installation of the new kernel 2.6.31.6-166.fc12.i168.PAE the desktop background and the icons of it disappear, and when i click to open the home dear, it loads and than do nothing.I can't right click on the desktop and when i shot down the system it pop's up to me "A program is still running" File Manager Not Responding Sow, first i think is a bug (spread) , and with the next update it will bee fixed but now after 1 week, i updated my system and nothing changes. Is there any quick and easy way to be viewing a giant folder of images in the file viewer and then just highlight a few that you want to resize to 800x600 (or whatever)? Currently I have to pull them into GIMP and then resize each one. Alternatively, I can pretty easily do a command line to resize the whole folder, but I don't really need every image resized. I'm mainly going through and thinking "oh, be fun to send this one to so and so" but I don't want to send them the eitire 18Megapixel image. A nice quick resize to 50Kb and 800x600 or something would be perfect but this just hasn't appeared for me yet.

Now I have the Thunar file manager opening up by default even when logged into Gnome (for example when using Alt-F2 and typing in a folder name, or when plugging in an iPod.) I've searched around for days but can't find any place to set a default file manager. The Default Applications dialogue doesn't include file manager, only web browser, video etc.)

The "starting file manager" continuously loops in the bottom panel, continuing to load forever. in the system monitor, if I kill the process "gnome panel", it resets itself, then continues the process. Only thing different I did was install that one thing that gives you System->Preferences->Windows by hitting "yum install control-center-extra".

I have downloaded the firefox 3.7a which was a tar.bz2 file. After downloading extracted the tar.bz2 into a download folder. Now I can figure out to do from there. How can update using this firefox update. All the zypper/yast ect. only use my repositories that dont have 3.7a and I can not figure out what else to do. Google searches all just say use package manager. But how do you use a package manager for a file on your hard drive?

After restoring the Windows bootloader (which I need to do every time Grub gets updated), I can no longer boot up Ubuntu. I have ubuntu 9.10 & windows 7 on my laptop. I have one 40GB Primary partition (C & 60 GB logical partition on my windows. I have given another 20GB for ubuntu.
I hibernated my windows7 & then started ubuntu 9.10. Then I copied a folder containing some PDF files from my ubuntu to that 60GB (D on windows. Then I rebooted the machine & choose windows from GRUB. the windows came up from hibernation but nowhere I was able to see that folder which I copied.
Since ubuntu supports (understands) NTFS file system it means when I copied that folder it should have updated the Directory Tree of NTFS on that 60GB (D but that folder is not shown.
When I restart the windows the folder appears (ofcourse because windows checks the file system again for consistency while in hibernation it does not).

On a KDE4 environment after downloading some music from rapidshare with JDownloader the archives self-extracted with the symbol in some of the file names. Those files couldn't be renamed or deleted, the file manager said that the files didn't exist - very weird. The files should have had some swedish characters in their file names. Now I'm stuck with those files on my machine. Anyone knows how to get rid of them?
