I just installed a fresh copy of 10.10 - i used the erase entire disk and use for 10.10 option after having earlier troubles of the same booting into 10.10 after installing it over the old / partition. it says:
error: couldn't read file.
error: you need to load the kernel first.
Failed to boot both default and fallback entries.One partition, of 10.10 and no idea where to go...
when i turn on my computer it says: error : no such device : a77318a7-5f3d-4531-8d27-370f2b43c0e2.Failed to boot default entries
View 9 Replies View RelatedHave been running ubuntu for sometime now and love its functionality...However since a recent update have the following issues..When I power on the laptop I get the toshiba logo followed by grub loading with the message ' invalid enviroment block" "unable to load default boot entries". When I then try to run the laptop off a LiveCd, the ubuntu splash screen appears with the loading process bar (horizontal line) displayed..however it then appears to display a black screen with no further activity..Now all of this is via an external monitor as my laptop screen shows no activity right from the very start with just a blank screen....so am really stuck here wondering if its a harware/software issue or a combination of both...

Intel E7500 CPU / Intel G31 Motherboard
Kingston 800MHz 2GB RAM
Hitachi 500 GB SATA HDD + Seagate 160 GB SATA HDD
I initially had only 500 GB HDD. I installed two installations of Windows 7 Ultimate - one 32-bit and one 64-bit installations. Both working fine.
Later on I installed the 160 GB HDD and installed Fedora 13 in it in a partition. The rest space of the 160GB I am using with Windows for storing data.
Now, the boot entries of both Windows installations are in the Grub Loader of F13. Means, if I remove the 160GB HDD, I cannot boot into my Windows installations.
Now I want to remove the 160 GB HDD and install a new 2TB hard-drive. That way, I cannot log into my Windows. And I do not want to lose the Linux installation also.
How can I remove the 160 GB HDD and install a new one without sacrificing my Windows installations?
OR...Is it possible that I can copy complete image of F13 on to the new HDD, so that things are same for the Windows installations?
It's quite easy to change the default boot entry through etc/default/grub. However, this only allows for the first entry to be changed. I want to be able to move all the entries in any order I like. What is the best/easiest way to do this?

I installed OpenSUSE 11.3 on the second (caddy tray) drive and didn't touch the existing windows partition during install.After install completed, I found there was no boot loader entry for WinXP during startup. Only SUSE-related stuff. I opened YaST boot loader and tried creating an entry of type "other" and device of "/dev/sda1" and set this as the default entry.The /boot/grub/menu.lst file now has an entry:Quote:

These instructions assume I'm using the Cisco VPN client on Windows, but surely vpnc on Ubuntu is very similar? failed (code 126).
It then says an automatic fsck failed and a manual fsck must be performed, then the system restarted. I have done a manual fsck and it did nothing. I booted up the system with knoppix and did it, nothing.
The default image viewer in 10.10 (eog) has met its match, a ~500MB image of the moon. I just thought it was kind of funny, while browsing the software center for an image viewer that could handle it, I noticed the description of the one installed by default and thought it was kind of funny, so I snapped this screenshot and thought I'd share it with you guys. By the way I have 4 GB of RAM and can view the image just fine in GIMP, just thought this was kind of funny.

i tried updating ubuntu from 10.10 to 11.04. It didn't work out, i got just a black screen trying to load new ubuntu. Nevermind, after multiple tries to recover it i simply installed ubuntu 11.04 over it. It works fine now, but i already got some problems Mainly, i can't find a way to pick the appropriate resolution. I have a 19" monitor with 1280x1024 resolution, video card is nvidia 8500gt. Any GUI tool (nvidia driver settings or 'monitors' tool) doesn't allow me to pick what i want. xorg.cong is nearly empty, that's all what i have there

I'm running 9.10. I was installing ALSA so that I could run my EMU 1616, and when I tried to go through the steps to install, I'm running into two errors that I've noticed so far. I think. Anyway, the first is that is states that the panelw library isn't there, and that alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device or address. The alsamixer one is really odd, since it's there, but I don't know why it won't run.
I initially had it running, and now it isn't. I've yet to get sound out of my EMU. the terminal window also tells me that it can't find the snd_emu file, even though it exists on the computer as well. I need an answer for a dummy.
I have managed to get a system going where I have kubuntu installed on a partition of my external hard drive. When the ehd is plugged in, everything works well. I have the option to boot into vista (my main os) or kubuntu. However, I see no reason why it won't let me have some kind of fallback mechanism that would let me boot into vista if the ehd is not found, instead I end up with the grub rescue prompt.
If not then I'm going to have to look at other options, perhaps booting into vista by default unless I hold down escape or whatever other key my bios expects to override, because there will be times that my ehd won't be plugged in. This is the only little niggle, as apart from that everything is working great.
Using the Nvidia driver from the repo on a Geforce 6800gs. In Kde4 all 3d applications seem to be working properly so I don't know why Gnome 3 is doing that myself. It wasn't working at all at one point and I am assuming that some update or another got it going. Perhaps a repo switch. Unfortunately I am not sure of what those changes may be. I just know that it does run now but only in fallback.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI tried to do my parents a favor by installing Ubuntu 9.10 alongside WinXP on their PC -- same configuration I have on my desktop at home. The install went fine, but since I made a poor buying decision on purchasing a MSI motherboard in the past, Ubuntu immediately crashes after boot (other MSI board users having the same issue, no help from MSI).
The computer tries to boot Ubuntu by default unless something else is selected from the boot menu. How do I change the boot preference from default (choice 0) to WinXP? I tried manually changing this (editing the grub.cfg file), but the file said not to edit, that it's generated by something else...How do I have WinXP load by default instead of the broken Ubuntu?
i was just wondering if there was any way to make it only boot ubuntu from pressing a button at startup like f11 or something instead of coming up with a menu asking me to choose which operating system to boot.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.
In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.
Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.
The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.
I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.
After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!
When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.
I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!
Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".
I had a a problem booting last night when my laptop battery came loose and caused a crash during boot.It ceased loading a daemon and I turned it off with the power switch, then I received the boot error,then i checked the linuxdrives directory and it was corrupt,I then, out of ignorance, ran wubi from within windows XP and said unistall believing that it would reinstall and fix itself.Thus you can see my green behaviour.I have been searching the threads and have tried many things but have had no success, I will suffer a great loss if I lose that load of Ubuntu as I have allot of work stored there, and in my Thunderbird accounts.

When I start up the computer, it eventually opens a screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, Vista and 3 other partitions. Ubuntu is at the top, Vista at the bottom, and it gives you five seconds to pick an OS or it automatically starts Ubuntu. This is very annoying because I almost always need Vista and I have a habit of pressing power and walking away and letting the computer load. Is there a way to have Vista be the default selection?
