I have installed two OS on my PC. Windows 7 and fedora 12,but when I boot it shows 3 entries for fedora and one for windows to select. How can I remove redundant menu entries without affecting boot loader.
View 1 Repliesi have been running Kubuntu 10.04 on my primary hard drive, and i have a second 1.5TB HD that i use for storage. so shrunk the secondary HD partition and created a second 50GB partition and i installed Ubuntu 10.10 on it and told it to rewrite the mbr on my primary HD. Where i am at: i took the menu entry from my Kubuntu "grub.cfg" and the entry from my Ubuntu "grub.cfg" and put them in the 40_custom file. so now when i boot-up my computer, it shows both installations at the bottom of Grub2s menu list. with all the menu entries that Grub automatically adds.
What i would like to know is how do i make it so that the Grub2 menu only shows the entries that i add to the 40_Custom file and not the randomly generated list aswell.

I just installed Debian squeeze. I installed grub to the MBR. It uses Grub 2. Apparently I'm not supposed to edit /boot/grub/grub.cnf, but /etc/default/grub and /etc/grub.d. I looked at these and read The Readme as well as a tutorial at [URL]. I'm still not sure of what to do. When I boot up I get 4 choices: 2 for Squeeze and two for another linux distro. I would like to edit the print out I get when I boot up, as well as add the partition for XP which wasn't included.

I'm a comparative newbie, especially with using WINE. I installed it through the F12 package installer. I then found that the Applications menu entries were inoperative. Just plain dead. I tried uninstalling, then reinstalling. No improvement. Tried again from terminal using yum no change. The only way I've got anything to work is if I run from terminal as root. I know that if the .wine directory is created with root it may only work with root. I've tried deleting that directory, but I'm not sure I succeeded. I don't see the .wine directory but nothing runs with a non-root login.
When I do see errors, they are mostly that the program can't be found in a WINE "DOS" directory. I did get two MS Office apps installed (as test cases) but, again, F12 menu items don't work and I can only run them as root. I think internet access is cut off as well (can't get them to activate). I guess my overall question is: How do I install WINE in F12 such that the menu items work for non-root logins? If there's already a guide, wiki or FAQ, I'd be happy to know where it is.
I would like to be able to edit which OS is set as default on the first selection menu. I installed Ubuntu via windows xp. and have Grub 2 installed. When I start my computer, first I see is the BIOS, then I have a menu which allows me to select either windows xp or Ubuntu (windows xp is the default which I'd like to change to Ubuntu). Once I select Ubuntu, then I get the menu allowing me to select between the different upgrade versions.
From all the pages I read through on editing grub2 defaults, they only refer to the second menu that I get to pick between the upgrade versions or kernels (I think they are referred to). What I'd like to do is set Ubuntu as the defualt on the first menu screen, as Ubuntu is my preferred OS and it can load automatically, then I don't care what the default upgrade version is loaded (this i have understood how to edit).
In my Red Hat 7.2 , the /boot/grub/grub.conf has the following data :
But when I reboot my Red Hat server , I don't see the Grub menu to say edit the boot kernel .
I have a simple question, what is the best way to clean up or edit my boot screen menu on Ubuntu...? I'm running 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux. I have run about 5 upgrades and the older Kernels still show up.

I installed WINE, and decided to remove it after installing something, I was unable to uninstall, so I just removed WINE, now, I have the program stuck in my main menu. I deleted the path and stuff, but it's still there. How do I get rid of it?

I used Ubuntu a few years back. I simply was not able to make it my main OS since I couldn't get video calling to work reliably enough. Anyways I just installed and noticed my grub menu had many more entries then I have operating systems on my computer. Some reason they came up as duplicates. I have so far gathered they took away my menu.lst, they replaced it with something like etc/general/grub. It appears editing this file doesn't give me the ability to change entries. There are a few I would like to rename, and a few I want to get rid of. There is also some other file that is not supposed to be edited, will I need to edit this or is there another way around it? I found info like this, but it is only adding not removing.
Assuming that you already looked at the grub2 documentation and had trouble figuring out what to do, try this. Use sudo to edit /etc/grub.d/40_custom. It will look like this:

I need to edit the menu, and I need to set SELinux to permissive. OOo will not run with SELinux enabled for some reason, and besides, all my systems use SELinux in permissive. Current way of handling this is only moving files around and re-creating directories and placing files there in correct order (keeping in mind where are "holes" in directory list that will be filled by new file in placed to that directory).
What is the more proper way of doing it? (Apart from re-creating all directories each time or using hex editor on disk).
Does anybody know how to manually edit the main menu (gnome) launcher files? I would like to start a program as root but the only wasan get it to work is to set it up as a "Terminal Application" and put sudo in front of the command. I have finally ditched Ubuntu/Mint after 2 years and have now installed Fedora 12. I am excited to give it a spin. This was the first version of Fedora that finally recognized my intel graphics card.
I have 2 questions:
1. How do I edit the fedora/Gnome main menu? When I left click on Applications, etc. I am not given that option.
2. How do I change the login screen?
When I edit my applications menu to to hide games they stay on the menu. Everything else hides when prompted.

Intel E7500 CPU / Intel G31 Motherboard
Kingston 800MHz 2GB RAM
Hitachi 500 GB SATA HDD + Seagate 160 GB SATA HDD
I initially had only 500 GB HDD. I installed two installations of Windows 7 Ultimate - one 32-bit and one 64-bit installations. Both working fine.
Later on I installed the 160 GB HDD and installed Fedora 13 in it in a partition. The rest space of the 160GB I am using with Windows for storing data.
Now, the boot entries of both Windows installations are in the Grub Loader of F13. Means, if I remove the 160GB HDD, I cannot boot into my Windows installations.
Now I want to remove the 160 GB HDD and install a new 2TB hard-drive. That way, I cannot log into my Windows. And I do not want to lose the Linux installation also.
How can I remove the 160 GB HDD and install a new one without sacrificing my Windows installations?
OR...Is it possible that I can copy complete image of F13 on to the new HDD, so that things are same for the Windows installations?
