GNOME 3 Failed to Load
Unfortunately GNOME 3 failed to start properly and started in the fallback mode. This most likely means your system (graphics hardware or driver) is not capable of delivering the full GNOME 3 experience.
.The interface is now Gnome 2. I have not change screen resolution 1280720, now is 1024x768.
Result of xrandr -q

1024x768 0.0*
Is it possible to delete a panel and move the remaining one in the Fallback Gnome 2-style mode? When I tried it everything seemed locked down.
View 1 Replies View RelatedUsing the Nvidia driver from the repo on a Geforce 6800gs. In Kde4 all 3d applications seem to be working properly so I don't know why Gnome 3 is doing that myself. It wasn't working at all at one point and I am assuming that some update or another got it going. Perhaps a repo switch. Unfortunately I am not sure of what those changes may be. I just know that it does run now but only in fallback.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Debian Wheezy. However, on logging in for the first time it reverted back to what looks like gnome2. I think this is a graphics card issue...

Is this a proprietary firmware issue and am simply better off disabling the built in graphics card and purchasing a separate card or is there a simple fix for this?
I recently installed Wheezy from a DVD (that was written almost a year and half ago) to my desktop. The DVD install was a minimal one, so after installation I updated the system and installed gnome. But after reboot, my gnome always falls back to gnome-classic.
Code: Select all$ gnome-shell --version
GNOME Shell 3.4.2
$ cat /etc/issue

May be some firmware is missing, so I installed firmware-linux, firmware-linux-free, firmware-linux-nonfree, firmware-realtek, firmware-atheros (last two following a boot time warning). That did not solve the problem, so I just did Code: Select all$ sudo apt-get install firmware-* That also did not solve the problem.
Then I looked into my .xsession-errors file:
Code: Select all/etc/gdm3/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
localuser:somesh being added to access control list
openConnection: connect: No such file or directory
cannot connect to brltty at :0
gnome-session-is-accelerated: No hardware 3D support.

I also installed "libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental" from another post I found in this forum. But gnome still falls back to gnome-classic.My hardware is: Core i5-4440, Intel onboard graphics, realtek audio and network.
When I tried the liveCD a while ago, it all worked fine. Now when i do the text install following openSUSE:GNOME 3.0 - openSUSE I just get fallback mode. I cant quite understand why as the machine has an intel 3150 and n550 dual core processor. System - Acer Aspire One D255 - n55- 2gb RAM - 3150 Graphics

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell dimension 8300 dual booting with windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10. I installed BURG on it since I didnt like the text grub style. Problem is I cant change the splash screen no matter what I do, or changes I make. My screen resolution is 1280x1024 and my video card is an Nvidia card.
Originally the splash screen was a purple screen with ubuntu 10.10 white text and some dots on it. After installing the plymouth themes, now it has changed to a blue screen with Kubuntu(?) on it... Id like to know whats wrong and how can I change the splash screen?
UPDATE: Ok I went to synaptic and saw plymouth.kubuntu-logo and kubuntu-text were installed and enabled (had litle ubuntu logo to the side). So I removed those 2 files then did a reboot. Now im back to the purple screen with ubuntu 10.10 white text and the dots but I still cant change the splash screen...

View 2 Replies View RelatedI get the new boot splash with the nice little rocket and all but I seriously dislike it. While I don't stare at my computer as it boots, I do happen to see it from time to time. Unfortunately, I always see this new little rocket and I wonder where my traditional Debian blue with the swirl went. Yes, I know I am using Grub-Pc now, and I have tried to edit my /etc/grub.d file by renaming the wallpaper line to my preference.
But all my config file sees is "background-grub.png" which is the little rocket ship. So, I give. What is the secret code to unlock my grub config file or do I seriously have to muck around with Plymouth in order to have a choice in the matter? Just for those of you who contemplate counseling me on better time management instead of wasting my precious time over such a silly little thing, I agree. Not to mention that I use Debian because I like to build my system.

I just installed a fresh copy of 10.10 - i used the erase entire disk and use for 10.10 option after having earlier troubles of the same booting into 10.10 after installing it over the old / partition. it says:
error: couldn't read file.
error: you need to load the kernel first.

Does anyone knows how to do this for all users with one command?Or which file i have to edit to do this?

Boot into multiuser mode and I'm still unable to login.

1) Anyone have a 'default' /etc/pam.d/system-auth that I can replace with the system-auth that was obliterated by the pam_passwdqc update?
2) Any other ideas?
How can I change the window focus mode in compiz in F14? I prefer point focus rather than click focus, but the 'system -> preferences -> windows' cannot run in compiz environment.
Also, can I save the position of the terminal in compiz? I don't want to adjust the terminal positions manually after each logging in.
I compiled a code on a Linux cluster machine with mpich and ifort. A test run shows that the program works fine. However, it seems that the program is running in serial instead of parallel mode: reducing the number of CPU's from 32 to 3 does not increase the time it takes to run the simulation. Infact, the simulation is slightly faster with 3 compared to 32 CPU's. Unfortunately I have very little experience on the subject.
My questions are:
(1) How can I be 100% sure my code is running in parallel and not in serial mode?
(2) If the code is running serial, what do I need to do to make it run in parallel mode?
