Ubuntu :: FIrefox 4 In Gnome (on Natty)?

Jun 9, 2011

I am running into a weird problem: Firefox 4's new layout loads and appears just fine in Unity, however when I login using Ubuntu Classic (Gnome 2.3) Firefox goes back to its old pre-firefox 4 layout: the menu bar still shows and the tabs don't appear in the title bar.

Ubuntu :: Firefox 4 - Natty - Adobe PDF Plugin

Jun 18, 2011

I am having problems with the Adobe PDF plugin to load and display PDFs within the browser.

This is a plain Natty-installation with Firefox 4. Adobe Reader 9 is installed with the deb package from the adobe - homepage.

The PDF seems to load when the file is actually stored on a webserver. But when the PDF is kind of dynamically generated, the file is not opened by the plugin but a file-save/open dialog appears.

Can reproduce this behaviour? To test, for example, to

[url]

If you click the PDF button unter "cached", the PDF is not loaded within the browser on my system.

If you however click, for example the second link under "Downloads" everything works as should.

Things I tried that failed:
- completely removing Adobe Reader 9 and the plugin and try to use Reader 8 + plugin instead
- using Mozplugger/evince instead of the Adobe Reader 9 plugin

In all cases, the PDF under "cached" is not loaded within the browser.

As comparision, for example in Windows 7 using Adobe Reader X, everything works as should.

I am not sure which one is the culprit here, my suspicion is Firefox 4...

Do you know of existing bugreports either in launchpad, firefox bugzilla etc?

I have an fglrx driver, but opengl animation doesnt slowdown pc as much as favicons does on firefox.

Ubuntu :: Remove Last Gnome Panel In Natty?

Apr 27, 2011

In Maverick I could remove the last Gnome panel by editing gconf and removing gnome-panel from desktop > gnome > session > required_components.I've just updated to Natty and doing this makes no difference. I assume Unity is doing it now, or maybe zeitgeist?I've grep'd through .local and .config, and checked Startup Applications but it still loads gnome-panel every session.

Ubuntu :: Natty - Gnome And Wobbly Windows

Jun 7, 2011

Upgraded to 11.04, tried Unity for a month but hated it, reverted back to Gnome today, now I have no wobbly windows.

I've enabled WW in CCSM and all the settings are defaulted. I've tried removing all traces of Unity using synaptic, but it just doesn't seem to have made a difference.

I've read a few threads about this, but so far haven't seen a fix other than "it just started working", so any pointers or ideas would be great as it hasn't just started working for me.

Dell Latitude D620 with current nVidia proprietary driver installed.

Ubuntu :: [Natty With GNOME] Gaps In Panels / Cause Of This?

What could be the cause?

Ubuntu :: Firefox Won't Redirect To Webpages From Bug Report & Others (11.04 Natty Narwhal)

Apr 6, 2011

I think from upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. Whenever programs ask me to send reports (bug reports) they fail to redirect me to the proper launch pad bug report page. It just loads up my home page and acts like it's finished. Even if I have Firefox previously open, nothing happens.

Liferea was doing the same thing until I changed it from using the Gnome Default to Firefox. Perhaps this is a gnome default failure or something?

Ubuntu :: Should Unity/Compiz Be Removed If Using Gnome 3 In Natty

Apr 22, 2011

I've played around with both Unity and Gnome 3 and I love them both. I've decided for now I'm using Unity on my laptop but I was thinking I'll use Gnome 3 on my desktop for particular reasons (I may switch to Unity if I find I'd like it better). My question is, if I install Gnome 3 via the ppa, wouldn't compiz no longer be supported with Gnome 3? Matter of fact I probably wouldn't use anything from compiz even if it could. Hence would it be safe to remove unity and all of compiz or do things in Ubuntu still depend on them? I also wouldn't want them still running in the background or anything. Perhaps now that Ubuntu decided to go the Unity way, that they should support a Gnome-shell build? Like Kubuntu/Xubuntu, even though regular Ubuntu still uses Gnome.

Ubuntu :: Menu Editors Not Working In Natty KDE & Gnome?

May 6, 2011

I installed Ubuntu Gnome fresh yesterday. I quickly decided Unity wasn't to my taste, especially when I seemed to hose it by trying to customize my compiz settings with ccsm (don't mess with compiz if you use Unity in any way). Anywho, I retreated to standard Gnome and also installed KDE. Mostly OK, but I noticed neither of the menu editors are working properly. When I install an application from the repositories it creates a proper menu entry, but when I install a Wine application nothing appears in the menu. Attempting to edit, add, or delete menu entries with the Gnome menu editor doesn't work. Hitting the New or Properties buttons produces no effect. Using the KDE menu editor from the Classic (non-slab) menu is likewise unsatisfactory. I can add or modify entries and apparently save them but nothing appears in the menu and when I re-open the menu editor my entries are not there. I can manually create application shortcuts on the desktop or on the Gnome panel, but I can't add those to the KDE Quick Launch bar in the panel (I think that's what its called, I'm in Gnome now).

Ubuntu :: Proxy Switch In Natty / 11.04 Gnome Classic?

Jul 7, 2011

Ever since I upgraded to Natty / 11.04, the quality of my desktop experience has dropped sharply.

One thing that effect me greatly is that I can no longer conveniently switch my network proxy on or off system-wide with single click.

Back in Maverick / 10.10, I could launch gnome-network-properties and switch it back and forth depends rather I am at work or at home.

I have found a similar application, "gnome-control-center network," on the surface of it, it seems to replace "gnome-network-properties" in Maverick. Except that this application doesn't seems do ANYTHING.

As result, I am having the hardest time switching my proxy settings, as I have to do so per application basis (gpodder, pidgin, aptitude, thunderbird / firefox, etc).

ps. I am using Gnome "classic" but Gnome 3 suffers the same issue

Ubuntu :: Name Workspaces In 11.04 (Natty) Running Gnome Without Unity

May 3, 2011

I've just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my netbook. Having had a bit of a play with Unity I found it not to my taste, so I've switched to "Ubuntu Classic" - Gnome without Unity - on the login screen. For a while now I've organised my work using the Workspace Switcher Gnome applet. I use five workspaces, each named to identify the type of stuff that goes on in it.

11.04 comes with Workspace Switcher version 2.32.1 - right clicking it and clicking on Preferences gives a stripped down preferences dialogue, no longer including fields allowing the user to define workspace names. Ubuntu 10.04, for example, uses Workspace Switcher 2.30.2 which did allow for workspace names to be defined via the Workspace Switcher Preferences dialogue. I'd really like to be able to define workspace names and have them show in the Workspace Switcher in the panel.

Fix was: Comment out anything in ~/.bashrc that references xterm. BOOM less than 1s total to prompt.

If it's faster than I can get my mouse hand back to the keyboard to start blasting CLI, it's good enough

The only problem is that it does not search my Firefox bookmarks. Every other search seems to work just fine. I ran Do in a terminal and this is what came up:

Firefox.PlacesItemSource "Firefox Places" encountered an error in UpdateItems: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object

After that, I went in a disabled the Firefox plug in and ran it again and the only alert was the "Wnck-CRITICAL" message, which seems to always be there.

I am running 10.04, with Compiz.

Ubuntu Security :: Firefox Asking For Gnome-keyring ?

There is one applet i know of on my system that wants me to enter my keyring pw twice "CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor" (i have a core2-duo cpu, a monitor for each cpu), but i have no clue why ff would be invoking a change in how ubuntu controls that app.

Is there any way of finding out, which application (or perhaps an add-on?) is actually asking for my keyring-pw (the input window just says "an application..." not like e.g. "synaptic package manager...".

Ubuntu :: Firefox Change Locales With Gnome Automatically

Apr 25, 2010

I have my 10.04 set up with english (us and gb) as well as spanish languages installed.

I have firefox 3.6.3 compiled and installed for a 64 bit system. The firefox source code comes only with en-US locale, so I obtained en-GB.jar and es-ES.jar (as well as their manifests) from firefox.com and added them manually to my chrome directory.

This had worked in the past, when I'd logout and switch the gnome locale to es-ES firefox would come up in es-ES etc, but for some reason firefox will only start up in en-US now.

How can I fix this to match the desired behaviour?

Fedora :: Firefox 4 Freezes On 15/Gnome 3?

Firefox 4 becomes completely unresponsive for about 5 seconds. It seems to be happening mostly but not exclusively when switching tabs.
