Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Upgrade, Now Firefox Fonts Don't Match Kde
Apr 29, 2011
So before natty, firefox 4 interface fonts matched the rest of my apps, but now they are huge! See the screen-shot to see what I mean. Anyone know how to get them to match again?
I think some of the browser fonts changed as well, but I know I can change them in the options menu.

I just upgraded a laptop from an older version of Ubuntu to 10.04.1 LTS, which included an upgrade of firefox to ver. 3.6.9. Many pages in firefox now display only some of the text, although if I hilight where the text should be I get hilighted areas and if I copy and paste them into an editor the text shows up. Other pages display normally.
An example of this is [URL] where the "Welcome to the Ubuntu Forums ..." (un-logged in) paragraph is invisible although the off-white box which should contain this text is there. A few things I've tried and discovered:
* SeaMonkey doesn't have this problem (I'm using it to write this).
* If I un-check "Allow pages to choose their own fonts", the invisible text shows up with locally spec'd fonts. Specifying local font colors makes no difference.
* Switching users makes no difference.
* I've tried re-installing a large number of ttf fonts plus fontconfig, which makes no difference.
* This problem wasn't there before the upgrade.

Fix my fonts after my upgrade. All my truetype fonts look really hazy and very off after my upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04.
This seems to only be a Firefox and Thunderbird problem.

I just finished installing a bunch of truetype fonts. After installing them, firefox is displaying "bradybunch" font when I search google.
The font settings are all serif and sans serif in both the system fonts settings and firefox settings.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.
Any idea why this could be happening?

I reduced my system font sizes from default 10 down to 8, but I want to also reduce the height of the Main Menu correspondingly. I've searched the forums and Google, but can't find a method for doing this. See the screenshots - both menu heights are exactly the same, but if I reduce the font size, I'd like the menu to shrink too.

I successfully installed Natty on my PC and everything works great. Or nearly! If I connect to a server via ssh and try to open an emacs window on the server: no fonts are visualized (only empty boxes) and I get the following warnings:
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*" to type FontStruct
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-helvetica-medium-r-*--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct
- running emacs with the "no window" option -nw works fine (but I don't like working with emacs in the terminal window).

When I try to upgrade from 10.04 to 11.04 I always get this error:
Code: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
If I run sudo apt-get dist-upgrade, I get:
Code:
~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Apparently there's nothing wrong in apt.log, but i cannot upgrade and i don't know how to fix it. Any clue?

I've just upgraded my Mythbuntu box to Natty. Now I have a completely unusable system due to Xorg taking 70% of CPU. Mouse movement is possible and I can just type but that is about it. Using MythTv is impossible.I'm running a standard mythtv build with the xfce desktop how to fix this one as it has rendered my PVR system impotent.

After going to Appearance->Fonts, in Natty, I changed the "Window title font" from Tahoma to "Arial Black". Now I can't change it back because Tahoma isn't listed in the "Pick a Font" dialog. I don't know how I originally got Tahoma. I think it did that several versions of Ubuntu ago. How do I get it to show up in the "Pick a Font" dialog? I do have ttf-mscorefonts-installer installed.
Doing:
Code:
# dpkg -L ttf-mscorefonts-installer
shows that they are in this directory:
Code:
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts
But Tahoma is not in there?

I just upgraded to Natty and some images display shifted colors, e.g. bright purple instead of yellow and bright green instead of whatever there used to be. Some images also show properly. I attached a screenshot of a bit of Thunderbird where the bug is visible. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong, or how to diagnose the problem properly? EDIT: and, to make this even more interesting, the attachment I made to the forum displays even more ridiculously once it has been attached - I'm attaching a screenshot of that, too. (although right now I have no idea what it looks like on a working machine)
EDIT2: To reiterate the problem: apparently, Firefox and Thunderbird rotate colors in indexed images for some reason. I am trying to find a way to fix this, with no luck so far.

I upgraded to Natty yesterday and my system boots into it ok but I don't get a grub menu (and so no other options like recovery mode which I really need right now). I tried purging grub and re-installing it on /dev/sda but still no joy. Here's the info from the Boot Info Script. I've also tried uncommenting GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 in /etc/default/grub but that doesn't help. How I can get the menu back?
Code:
Boot Info Script 0.56 from 8 February 2011
=> Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks at sector 1 of the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks for (,msdos1)/boot/grub on this drive.
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb .....
Devices which don't seem to have a corresponding hard drive: sdc

I've had this problem on a couple of Ubuntu server upgrades and am keen to get to the bottom of it. Basically, with an Ubuntu 10.10 server installtion where LVM has been used, running through the do-release-upgrade process works perfectly until the reboot stage. Then grub complains with "no such disk" and dumps me out to the grub shell. From here, I can see (from ls) the following:
Code:
(hostname-swap_1) (hostname-root) (hd0) (hd0,5) (hd0,1) (fd0)
I can enumerate the filesystem on (hd0,1) which seems to contain the /boot filesystem and the filesystem on (hostname-root) seems to contain the / filesystem.
If I execute:
Code:
linux=(hd0,1)/vmlinuz-image-2.6.38-8-server root=(hostname-root)
initrd=(hd0,1)/initrd.img-2.6.38-8-server
boot
It boots, but into busybox saying that the target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init.

Successfully upgraded to 11.04 over the weekend, and all seems to be working well. The only issue I've got is with the grub menu. I used to be able to run:
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
followed by:
sudo update-grub
after kernel updates, in order to change the default OS to boot (I've been dual-booting Ubuntu and xp for several years now).

My current setup was:
4 x 500 gb hard drives in (software / onboard controller) Raid 10 (1 +0) with Windows 7 x64 as the primary OS
1 500 gb hard drive with Ubuntu 10.10 installed
After upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 Beta, I hit the Grub Error. I have removed the 5th HDD but still getting it on boot into Windows 7. I am currently in the process of copying all files from my raid via a 10.10 flash drive boot (fortunately was able to mount my raid's partitions).

X is working, I get a desktop, all updates are current, just no Unity menus/window/widgets/whatever, blank desktop with single mapped network folder and no working keyboard shortcuts after initial login. I upgraded on Alpha 2 and it ate my desktop, never has given it back for 3 months. I assumed eventually the upgrades would fix it. Looked into ditching Unity and doing GDM, but thought I'd wait it out, ran dpkg-reconfigure unity and it did nothing, can't find any relevant errors in the logs, where should I be looking and/or what should I be doing? Running lots of servers on this box and have dual-boot, otherwise I'd probably torch it and start over.

If I just upgrade my 10.10 to 11.04, will it replace gnome with unity? I tried unity before and it is not satifying because it is not customizable, I feel I have less options and less power over what my interface looks like and how it behaves. Same case with gnome3.I'm wondering if when I upgrade to Naughty will I have to go through a lot of messing around with packages and configuration files to get back to gnome2 ? Do we have an option when we upgrade to choose between Unity, Gnome2 and Gnome3?

I was running Ubuntu 10.4 netbook version (with Gnome) on my Dell Inspiron 910 and yesterday it told me there was an upgrade available, to Natty. I followed the links, did the download, and left it to install overnight. When I got up today, it said it had a problem, because an application was using a file it needed. I thought I had closed everything before I started the process. I acknowledged the message, and proceeded to restart.
I ended up with the standard 10.4 Ubuntu screen, but with no tool bars, status bars, or anything. Just the wallpaper. Keyring login came up and I signed in, wireless said it was connected. So it looks like things are working, just no UI as such. Poked all the screen edges with the mouse, but nothing popped out.
Ctrl><Alt><Del> brought up the logout screen, and if I clicked on Help, I could ultimately get Firefox to run. (Note: the Help screen talks about Gnome, but it had the new popout scroll bars).
If I hold down <Shift> on startup, I get the GRUB menu. I am running linux generic 2.6.38-8 , but I am not sure where to go from there. Running dpkg didn't help.

After upgrading to Natty, my Alt/Win meta key option is no longer working.
I'm using System Settings -> Keyboard -> Layouts -> Options -> Alt/Win key behavior and selecting "Meta is mapped to Win keys".
However the Win key still just pops up the files-and-folders window, and meta is not there.
This worked fine in 10.10. Need this with Emacs...

I upgraded to natty on release day and everything went fine, but about three days ago when I went to update my sources, I get this:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
Code:
W: Failed to fetch [URL] Sources 404 Not Found
W: Failed to fetch [URL] Packages 404 Not Found
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I've looked through the forums, but similar problems are always tied to the mozilla repo, not this one. It seems important, so I'm not sure if I should just delete it or what. My sources.list looks like this:
Code:
# deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 10.10 _Maverick Meerkat_ - Release i386 (20101007)]/ maverick main restricted
# See [URL] for how to upgrade to newer versions of the distribution.
deb [URL] natty main restricted
deb-src [URL] natty main restricted

I was going to pull the trigger and do the "natty" upgrade. Before I do I had a few questions. Basically, I changed a few config settings on my ubuntu 10.10 load. I made it so I can connect to it remotely via ssh and open a secure desktop session. I changed some port settings so it doesn't use the traditional ssh 22 port and traditional xrdp port was change also. So, I'm wondering if my "tweaks" will remain intact after the update or if I'll have to go back in and reconfigure those settings? I'm running 10.10 on my PIII 600 with an old ATI Radeon 64 graphics card. I'm quite happy with 10.10 but if I can upgrade to "natty" will little problems I'd like to. Also, my default GUI is xfce. Also, here's my system as shown by lspci:
