on my Linux Ubuntu 8.04 machine, I recently added a new user. When ever I use it, I can't get to System~Administration~Synaptic Package Manager, for the sole reason that it does not show up in the System~Administration list. Also, some other things don't show up, such as hardware drivers.

The last one is xul-runner-1.9.2. In the past when I updated this package, the package OpenFTD which I use doesn't want to start anymore. According to the person who writes this, it depends on the way Mozilla and Ubuntu are building the package xulrunner. This could be a "cheap" answer but what to do? Do I need xulrunner when I don't use Firefox? I do use Thunderbird however.
When I don't do anything these three items will be presented as upgradeable all the time and I don't want or cannot install the upgrades.
I have asked this question several times but I think that I am not asking it correctly. I have umbutu 9.04 and Windows 7.0 on my C: drive. When I start my machine I have approximately 9 or 10 items on my boot list and I would like to have 2.It has been suggested that I determine what version of grub I am using and I am using /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-19 generic. I have no idea what that means.It has been suggested that I install some various items of software and I am sure that it would solve my problem but to me it would be like looking down a cows throat. Please, don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the input but its like when you go to the doctor you kind of wonder "just what the heck is he talking about". Maybe someone could just tell me how to accomplish what I want to do so I can understand!My daughter uses this machine and she goes to places that I didn't know I had.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a n2pap-lite motherboard with a AMD Sempron 2800+. My host clock is at 133mhz when it needs to at least be at 166mhz to be a AMD Sempron 2800+... I installed the system on 100mhz clock not thinking that it mattered.

It says on guides that it will ask me to reboot but it doesn't, so I manually did it and put the CPU Frequency Monitor on my taskbar. It does not have the options like it shows in the screenshots to set my CPU frequency..

View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I have virtualbox with a fresh install of Windows XP running in it (no service packs) and when I plug in a USB Item it shows up on the device list and it is not greyed out, but nothing happens I cannot access the device through windows XP. It was greyed out before but then I logged in as root and started virtual box and it is not greyed out anymore but nothing happens when I plug in a USB item.

However, i would like to get rid of the little enveloppe in the menu bar, more precisely in what i think is called the notification area. i have found some stuff online about how I'm supposed to delete a package and restart, quite unsuccessful method really, since the envelope is still there.
Plus whenI right click on the menu bar to pin / unpin items, it doesnt work, all the submenus are greyed out.
Is it possible to add items to the Add to Panel menu to increase it's functionality and offer more options?

but how do you add to it? I'd like to add Terminal, Calibre and some other things to the sidebar for easier access.
I would also like to move Google Chrome to the top of the bar, instead of the middle.

other than not knowing how to customize my applications in the sidebar, Unity is pretty awesome.
When I choose System --> Preferences --> Screensaver, it runs x-screensaver instead of gnome-screensaver, BUT, in /usr/share/applications, I have the file:
gnome-screensaver-preferences.desktop
And the contents are:

So it should be launching gnome-screensaver, not x-scrensaver. Where on earth is x-screensaver getting launched from? I thought the menu was determined by /usr/share/applications. (By the way, I did previously have x-screensaver instead of gnome, I am trying to put it back how it was. I have more-or-less succeeded, except this Menu item which is puzzling me.)
i recently install NTFS-Config and Auto-mount my NTFS_partitions... They are now successfully mounting in Start-up, but whenever i try to remove something(within) NTFS partition, the removing item is not going to Trash,its just deleting that item permanently,

I have a very annoying problem. I cannot move any panel items to the upper right hand corner... But I can move them to any other panel, right or left.I right click the item.Then I click Move.Then I click the upper right hand corner.Then nothing happens, except if there is a group of buttons side-by-side then the right-clicked item will move to the far right of the group

But there are some things that Ubuntu evidently thinks should never be removed from the launcherFor example I don't like "Files and Folders". It doesn't show the entire folder structure. I can't see how to remove it. Instead I prefer "File Manager".

I've successfully installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition, and I'm now stuck. How the hell do I use this? I can't figure out how to add different items to my side menu bar. I can't figure out which version of Ubuntu I have. The documentation page says, "To check which version of Ubuntu you are running, click System -> About Ubuntu. The first line of the page that loads will tell you the version number, for example Ubuntu 10.04 LTS." I DON'T EVEN HAVE A "SYSTEM" BUTTON! How am I supposed to use this clumsy OS? I can't find any sort of "beginner's guide" or help like that on the internet.

My problem is that i installed screenlet and drapes wallpaper changer but every time i start my computer the drapes application failed to load and some of the screenlets also not start. In the panels the icons automatically changes their position and sometimes. i don't know what is the problem. Please help me because it is very annoying for me every time i start some screenlets manually and click on the drapes error.

After my previous stint with 10.10 I've gone back to 10.04 because it boots in 20 seconds instead of 70+ and 10.10 didn't really seem to offer much new stuff that I need. Except one thing. When 10.10 boots, it automatically connects to whatever wireless network is set to Auto. 10.04 however, doesn't. I have to right click the tray applet and click on "Enable Wireless" and only then does it connect to the Auto networks. After a reboot, it's forgotten that I've clicked on "Enable Wireless" and I have to do it all over again.
I've found this thread that seems to describe the same problem and the only working suggesting is to use wicd instead of network-manager.
Does anybody know of a way to make it work using network manager? Do you know what command clicking on "Enable Wireless" runs - if I could just run that in an init script, problem solved. I thought it would be; ifconfig wlan0 up but that doesn't seem to do anything at all (wlan0 is definitely the right adapter)
I'm using an ATI Radeon HD 6850, and although drivers aren't enabled, 11.04 fits my resolution, and has animation/shadows. I need to enable drivers so games like Minecraft will run better. Whenever I install the drivers, 11.04 fails to load, or it'll just give me a barrage of glitches. How can I install the latest ATI Drivers for Ubuntu 11.04?

I just started using the Ubuntu Netbook Remix (9.10 Karmic) a couple weeks ago. I've added my own and removed a few of the default icons in the simplified, menu-driven desktop interface. However, the icons are in the order in which they were added (particularly in the "Favourites" tab. How can I rearrange or sort these icons?
I've tried right-clicking the tab and desktop, but no sort option appears. I've tried dragging the icons to the desired spot in the window, but that doesn't work either. Is there a control panel in the "System" tab that will let me sort the icons, or is this not possible in the netbook remix?
It's my CPU scaling and dual mode modem that aren't initializing properly on startup. The CPU scaling starts up in 'performance' mode and doesn't throttle back to 'on demand' like it should, and like it used to. Also the modem starts up as a usb mass storage device and the boot process should, and used to, toggle it into modem mode.
It certainly looks like it is a user rights issue as both devices require me to sudo the change from userspace. I'm on 9.10 64bit with a fairly new install, I havent done anything abnormal to the system except change the default lang from UTF-8 to ISO-8859. other than that I've only installed packages from synaptic, and done the recommended updates. I don't know exactly where the problem started.

Alright, after trying to organize shortcuts in Wine's menu (which did not work), I ended up hitting the 'Revert' button, which changed the names of most of the folders:

As you've probably guessed, I want to remove "wine-Programs-" from the beginning of the folder names. I've tried using the menu editor to do this, but the 'Properties' button does not seem to work on anything I did not create myself. How do I go about editing the names?
I would also like to know how to move the MS Office shortcuts into a custom folder/menu. They refuse to drag into any folder I make.
