Dec 4, 2010Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.

Jul 3, 2010I have a bit of a minor niggle with ubuntu 10.04. The items in my top panel seem to rearrange themselves at random whenever i logout and then log back in again. For example, i normally have indicator applett session in the top right hand corner of my screen, but if i logout and log back in again it has occasionally jumped across to the left of the active panel items.

Apr 1, 2010Items in my xfce panel are disappearing. First it was the networkmanager launcher which disappeared in xfce but still appeared when I used GNOME, then it disappeared in GNOME. My "x updates are available" icon and volume control icons are also gone, and just now my entire "applications" drop down menu disappeared. I frequently use xmonad so I know all the /bin/ commands for critical programs, but this is really annoying. Also, my desktop keeps changing back to a certain image without me changing it. If I was on windows I would think I had a virus. Maybe I dowlnoaded some bad games I was trying to play in wine? xubuntu 9.10, not updated for a little while since the icon disappeared, Thinkpad T61...

Notice the two pictures below, one running Comsol in Unity, the other one running in Gnome 2.32. Where my File>Edit>Options>Help at Unity

Ubuntu :: Shortening The Width Of Items On The (start) Panel
Jun 10, 2011I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and on my laptop I'm finding it very inconvenient to manage multiple running application interfaces and windows because of my screen being so small. Between the whole Applications, Places, System menus and system tray I don't really have much room to work with. I know thats why Ubuntu's Gnome environment comes with two pannels, but again, I need all the screen space I have and shortening my view of my windows would be counter-productive thats why I'm only using one. So my base question is: Is there a way to shorten the width of the minimized windows to a more manageable size, and how? I would also be fine with just an icon for the indicators instead of the text.

May 23, 2010I was playing around with the default panel that has the power icon (wrong lingo maybe) and the network/sound icons, etc.I deleted some items including the power icon and now for the life of me can't find it in the panel applets list in lubuntu.Is there a way to restore the default panel with the settings as when I first installed lubuntu.I also played with some spacings and other settings so would rather just get it back to normal/restore it vs add all the items back on and then play with the spacings again.

Mar 7, 2010First off, I have spent several hours searching this and other forums looking for an answer to this, and have tried several things, none of which have fixed this issue. Here is what I'm seeing:I performed a new install of FC12 on a Thinkpad R40, 512Mb RAM, with a 40Gb HDD, 38Gb useable, from a live CD. That leaves a little over 9Gb free for expansion. All went well with the install, but the post-boot upgrade would not complete due to an error with the abrt files. I found a thread discussing this and used the suggested method of performing the updates from a shell, which worked fine. There were LOTS of installations, updates, and replacements, and finally the shell returned "Complete!". After a reboot I was going through the Fedora_12_ User_ Guide.pdf and noticed many items missing from the System Menu as described in section 3.1.1.3 "The System menu". Another thread seemed to address a similar issue with su - then yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment", which I did. It updated over 870 items, then completed with no errors. At this point I logged out and back in, no change, and then tried a reboot, which also did not change anything. Finally, I'm appealing to the community.

Sep 4, 2011Recently my GNOME (bottom) panel started reshuffling items after reboot.
I tried removing the panel, recreating it and placing new items on the panel. After rebooting the PC everything is undone. The panel reshuffles the items (even when the "Lock To Panel" is used). Also the items that are moved to the top panel, after rebooting return to the bottom panel.
Does anyone have a solution for this issue?

Nov 27, 2010Recently I have installed DockbarX and Cardapio. After installation they are supposed to be found in the Add to Panel items, but both of them are not there.I can run them directly without any problem. Is there anything else I should do manually? I have tried pkill gnome-panel to restart the panel as well.

Feb 23, 2011so I'm using Xubuntu 10.04.2, and I would like to add the network manager to the GDM Panel.
I know it must be possible somehow, since the Gnome version lacks the battery monitor, and the Xfce version has it present. I'm just not quite sure how to get it done.
I do not have Gnome installed, I have only XFCE, LXDE, and Openbox.

Apr 21, 2011I'm currently using Unity 0.2.46 on Ubuntu 10.10. Installed from a ppa. The only way I have found to add an application launcher to the panel is to actually launch the app, then right click it's icon on the panel and click "Keep in Launcher". This is great but I've noticed at least one of my applications (Mumble) doesn't give me that option. Is there an alternative method? (see screenshot for example)

May 14, 2010I'm running an up-to-date Lucid Lynx but now getting irritated by a bug or problem (I'm not sure whether it's a bug) in Gnome-panels. The problem is whenever I add a new panel in Gnome Desktop, the new panel doesn't appears on screen and needs to be re-logon to appear. It seems a known issue when I checked for the same at Launchpad, but it existed in betas.
I found this trouble since I have made a clean install of Lucid but thought it'll be fixed in any of the updates, but it didn't solved even after the most recent update I made this morning. I wanted to report this bug but didn't knew how to file bug for gnome-panels as there's no option like 'Report a problem' for gnome panels.

May 1, 2011I like Unity, and I appreciate Canonical's work in making the desktop cleaner-looking and more intuitive.I think that being able to customize the top/application(?) panel would be very powerful. By this, I mean both adding and removing indicators.I guess the developers are aware of this, and it's easier said than done. I don't know.Personally, I miss the weather and CPU temperature applets of the old Gnome layout.I tried to apply the best guide I've found to modifying the top panel, to no avail.
After I followed the instructions for the addition of three different indicators (weather, cpu frequency and CPU and RAM % usage), my top panel remained the same.I don't know whether the indicators should show up right away or only upon restart. Slackware :: Xfce4-quicklauncher Plugin Not Showing In The Xfce Panel's "add New Items" Menu?
Jul 4, 2011I installed the xfce4-quicklauncher plugin from a tar file in Slackware 13.37. It is showing as installed in gslapt, but it is not showing in the xfce panel's "Add New Items" menu. (see attached images) I tried rebooting and a few google searches. What must I do to get the xfce4-quicklauncher plug-in to appear in the xfce panel's "add New Items" menu?

May 2, 2011I've done a quick google search and didn't really find anything that I understood. I DID find a reference to the bug on launchpad, but supposedly it was fixed as of version 2.1 and I'm running the latest version I could find which I believe is 2.9 so I'm a bit lost.
Any help would be great, if you need more info, just tell me how to get it and i shall do so as I really am missing gnomenu. If it makes any difference, I'm on ubuntu 11.04 64bit running in classic mode
Ubuntu :: Adding The Panel - Gnome Crashed And Computer Won't Boot Correctly
Dec 8, 2010I have a desktop computer running Linux Mint 9 with the Gnome desktop (not sure what version -- though by default Mint 9 comes with Gnome 2.30). Last night I tried adding a panel to the desktop by right-clicking on the existing bottom panel and selecting "New Panel". Please note that I've already got another panel at the top of the desktop on the left side on autohide and no expand.
When I added another panel, it placed a normal panel on the right side of the screen without any problems. When I right-clicked on the new right-side panel and selected "Properties", I changed the orientation to "top" (where there was already a panel, if you remember). After that moment, it seemed like the entire desktop environment crashed. Everything was completely unresponsive -- the only thing moving on the screen was the mouse. I couldn't do anything with the gui, not even shut the computer down.
Since the gui shutdown wasn't working, I switched to a different tty screen, logged in, and ran a shutdown command with the option to reboot. The computer shut down fine, and when it woke back up, the same problem was still there: Nothing loaded on the screen except for the background image and the mouse, which was still able to move but nothing else. I have the computer set up to automatically log me in, so I know it's not crashing before the user prefs are being loaded...
After restarting it again and getting the same result, I switched to a different tty screen, logged in, and tried messing around with stuff to no avail. I did notice, however, that the computer was becoming evermore sluggish, and something printed on the screen stating that a program had been terminated because of "not enough memory". It seemed like some process was consuming WAY too much RAM by itself or a program was accidentally forkbombing the computer. ...All because I added a panel...?
