I can see how to add programs to the Launcher. I can also remove some things from the launcher. But there are some things that Ubuntu evidently thinks should never be removed from the launcherFor example I don't like "Files and Folders". It doesn't show the entire folder structure. I can't see how to remove it. Instead I prefer "File Manager".
I recently got Steam running under PlayOnLinux, and I notice it put in the the "Other" category. Is there any way I can move it up to games? Also, is it possible for me to add icons to the launcher?
Okay, two packages in question here: sshd and xrdp.
In the /etc/rc.d/rc5.d directory there is a K??sshd link, I'm not really sure why the default is to kill sshd in graphical mode, but it's there. I saw it coincidentally when I went to add an S??xrdp link so that I could have xrdp run when the computer starts. I restarted the computer, and of course, couldn't connect via my Windows Remote Desktop client. A quick ps -e | grep xrdp in a terminal window showed me that xrdp had not, in fact, started.
I hop back in to ??/rc5.d to see if I messed up creating my link and poof. there's no more S??xrdp link, furthermore, the K??sshd link that I had removed was back.
Okay, so Fedora doesn't like you messing with the init links manually... I can dig it, cause there's this nifty gui tool to manage startup items... I go in to that and add entries for sshd and xrdp, calling them via their init scripts so I can make sure everything plays nicely... then restart.
Oh, wait, still no xrdp or sshd running.
If I manually start these servers using their init scripts from a terminal they run fine, no issues, but I don't want to do that, and I think we can all agree that I should't have to. What am I doing wrong? What is the 'proper' way to add servers to the startup process and since entering runlevel 5 apparently kills sshd, how do I prevent that?
In gnome 3, when I go to activities>applications I either have duplicates (sometimes I do and sometimes I don't) of some programs or no icons for the ones I uninstalled, but they are still there. How do I hide/delete them?
I added Kubuntu-Desktop components to my Ubuntu 10.04 system using Synaptic Pkg Mgr, with the mistaken expectation that I would then be able to toggle between Ubuntu and Kubuntu Desktops. Of course, when adding Kubuntu-Desktop components, the dependencies feature brought in around 8 or 10 items.
I tried to undo all of this, but I fear I may have removed one or two Kubuntu named packages which may be part of the original Ubuntu installation.
Also there remains a gaggle of applications, such as Dolphin, KNetwork Mgr, Konqueror, just to name a few.
The two-fold question is, (1) How can I get back as closely as possible, to my original, pure Ubuntu installation, short of a complete re-install; and (2) Is there a document out there which lists all of the packages that come standard with the Ubuntu installation.
I have Fedora 11 installed-32bit-with xfce installed as the desktop. When I click on the fedora icon for the menu and select Preferences, there are 2 input methods listed even though I did not have any installed.Since there is no menu editor any more, does anybody know how to edit the menu so that I can get rid of these entries?
I uninstalled xmms player quite a long time ago. I think when I had hardy heron. Currently I'm on 10.04. When I right click a .mp3 file I still have the option to play with xmms player showing up. Even if I choose an "other application" the xmms player option remains stickied to the top.Does anyone know how I can remove this entry? I did a lot of searching but couldn't find a solution.
I am trying to do a comparison of two folders, let's call them dir1 and dir2 and remove any items that have the same file name in both folders from dir2.
I would like to remove the launcher (scrolling bar) which is on the left of ubuntu 11.4!Do you know how could I do it?And then I just saw that ubuntu 11.4 does not have the weather in the main panel (near the clock). Do you know a way to install again the weather?
yesterday I installed 11.04 and it looked normal as I expected in 10.10 but when I enabled nVidia drivers, it changed to the new Unity style launcher on the left side and in all honesty it is completely ridiculous and un-productive. How can I change it back w/o disabling the 3rd party graphic drivers?
I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04In 10.10, Nautilus showed all my drives/partitions automatically. The same goes for 11.04, but... all the drives/partitions are also shown in the launcher.Because it gets a bit crowded on the left side, I want to get rid of those drive-icons.I can only open them, not remove them from the launcher, except my external drive (safely remove), but than it also disappears from Nautilus Is there any (easy) way to remove those drives?
From what I gather, there's no way to remove the Trash icon from the Unity launcher, or to hide it; is this true? I noticed that if I delete ~/.local/share/Trash, the file re-appears if I click on the Trash icon in the launcher.
Is there a way I can remove the backing to the Unity launcher icons? I want to make it so that I can make them look like iOS app icons, and the Unity dock just resizes the icon and adds a background to it.
the computer, home and wastebasket launchers are on the desktop, i would like for them to leave but when i right click, move to wastebasket is greyed out, which is what google said,

how can i remove 'applications' and 'files and folders' launchers from unity in Ubuntu 11.04? Because applications and files and folders are already accessible from typing in the search box which gets opened clicking the top most left button.
For some reason the general launcher button (+ in circle) in the unity menu has disappeared. I do not know how to restore it. Which means I have great problems to start al apps that are not standard in the menu.
I get to my specific problem, I'm running Xubuntu 9.10 (karmic) on a Playstation 3 (PPC). I am attempting to install "Qemu-launcher".
1. Tried to install "qemu-launcher" via "Add / Remove Applications". it gave me an error about conflicting packages, and deferred me to Synaptic Package Manager.
2. Tried to install "qemu-launcher" in Synaptic Package Manager. error: "Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade -- the following packages have unresolvable dependencies. Make sure that all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences. -- qemu-launcher: Depends: qemu-kvm (>=0.11.0~rc1) but it is not installable"
3. Tried to download "qemu-launcher" via "apt-get" in terminal - same error as in Synaptic
4. Attempted to download "qemu-kvm" via "apt-get" in terminal: "package qemu-kvm is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source. E: package qemu-kvm has no installation candidate."
5. Found and downloaded "qemu-kvm-0.11.0~rc1.orig.tar.gz". Extracted archive.
I have asked this question several times but I think that I am not asking it correctly. I have umbutu 9.04 and Windows 7.0 on my C: drive. When I start my machine I have approximately 9 or 10 items on my boot list and I would like to have 2.It has been suggested that I determine what version of grub I am using and I am using /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-19 generic. I have no idea what that means. It has been suggested that I install some various items of software and I am sure that it would solve my problem but to me it would be like looking down a cows throat. Please, don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the input but its like when you go to the doctor you kind of wonder "just what the heck is he talking about". Maybe someone could just tell me how to accomplish what I want to do so I can understand! My daughter uses this machine and she goes to places that I didn't know I had.
I am missing the are on the top bar that u can click on to get to chat and email and inbox and compose a message it just went missing all of a sudden and it was a super help to have because im always sending mail and getting chats and now i can look at picture.
So I have virtualbox with a fresh install of Windows XP running in it (no service packs) and when I plug in a USB Item it shows up on the device list and it is not greyed out, but nothing happens I cannot access the device through windows XP. It was greyed out before but then I logged in as root and started virtual box and it is not greyed out anymore but nothing happens when I plug in a USB item.

I have a bit of a minor niggle with ubuntu 10.04. The items in my top panel seem to rearrange themselves at random whenever i logout and then log back in again. For example, i normally have indicator applett session in the top right hand corner of my screen, but if i logout and log back in again it has occasionally jumped across to the left of the active panel items.
i want to add a "Network" access to the "Files & folder" panel, so i dont have to click a folder and then inside nautilus click on network. Is there any way to do this? Also after installing UNR, the hard drive where i have UNR installed doesnt appear anymore under "volumes". However if i stick an usb memory it appears there... any workaround?
I installed a dual boot Windows 7 / Ubuntu netbook remix 10.04 yesterday. So far so good, everything works fine.
However, i would like to get rid of the little enveloppe in the menu bar, more precisely in what i think is called the notification area. i have found some stuff online about how I'm supposed to delete a package and restart, quite unsuccessful method really, since the envelope is still there.
Plus whenI right click on the menu bar to pin / unpin items, it doesnt work, all the submenus are greyed out.
