I've already joined the bug report on launchpad. What I want to know here is:How to I reboot directly into the GRUB menu, forced, without having to rely on the buggy sensing of the SHIFT key? I've heard mention of some variables that can be set, but the 137 mostly nested lines of grub.cfg don't exactly encourage me to experiment.
View 1 Repliesi wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 (gonna upgrade soon) and as of yesterday I haven't been able to get a capital t from pressing shift+t keys. For some reason, all other keys work fine. Yesterday, the keys were triggering as maximize window/unmaximize window. I checked the keyboard shortcuts in Gnome and shift+t wasn't set to anything. I then assigned it to something else and removed it, and now the maximize/unmaximize problem is gone, but nothing happens when I press shift+t while typing. I can still get a capital T like I just did with caps lock on.

Whenever I try to use CTRL or Shift Insert to copy or paste text, i get a dialog box that comes up and says, Could not find "/home/ken/~", see attachment, even after I click on the OK button. It used to work a long long time ago.It does not copy or paste anything. I'm on Karmic. If its a keybinding where the heck is it located. I'm sort of a noob.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been playing around with xdmx for quite a while now. Everything works fine, but my keyboard goes "crazy". I've tried all the command line options to set model etc. For example the cursor keys capture a screenshot. The letters work, but capslock/shift doesn't, etc..Today I tried to create a dummy screen in xorg.conf and then vnc into it. Then the mouse didn't show or work in the vnc client.
Is there any way to fool the nvidia driver to think that there is a second display connected? I think that would work better. The dummy driver doesn't have xrandr etc.I'm trying to get this to work on my desktop and laptop. They both have totally different hardware.I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and xdmx and vnc have been pulled from the default repos.
I have Ubuntu 9.10, PuppyLinux431 and Windows XP on a Toshiba laptop. I like Ubuntu, but the speed of PuppyLinux is addictive, so that was my default boot until I upgraded Ubuntu which included an upgrade to Grub2.
My problem: Grub2 doesn't recognise PuppyLinux. Using information from [url] I have made an executable file named 07_Puppy in /etc/grub.d and did update-grub from root. Still no luck. I can boot PuppyLinux from the grub command line using the following commands:

The problem is that grub is actually booting from a directory /boot which is in the root partition, but is invisible once the machine has booted, because the /boot partition is mounted over it. The result of all this is that the upgrade option does not appear in the boot menu, because that option has been inserted in the menu.lst (or grub.conf) in the /boot partition. is it ok for me to run:grub-install /dev/sda4(that's the device that contains the /boot partition where the upgrade menu option and data). Also, do I need the --root-directory option, given that the boot directory is the root directory of that partition.

I have removed desktop manager from /etc/init, and GRUB is configured to use console. After upgrading from Karmic to Lucid I have noticed just before login invitation all previuos console output is cleaning. As a result I can not see boot process messages with Shift-PgUp/PgDown. How to prevent console output cleaning?

Well, OK, I can live with thatAfter dragging anyting inside Netbeans (windows, menus, ETC), Unity Launcher stops dodging windows and autohiding. It just sits on the screen. It starts to behave normally only after I restart Netbeans. Now- that's pretty annoying.EDIT: Even worse: If I exit Netbeans during debugging session, I must exit Firefox as well before launcher starts behaving normally again. Now, that's entirely unacceptable. Good enough reason to remain on "Ubuntu Classic" (what's left of Gnome that is), and eventually switch do different distro or even... ungh... WAMP.

A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode.That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.
I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. I've done a clean install of XP Pro on my HP XW8200 (Boot drive is 2x73GB SCSI drives set up as RAID 1)I've run the Ubuntu 10.10 desktop installer and partitioned the drive, installed ubuntu and rebooted when requested.No OS selection screen appears after POST though. Just goes straight into WinXP. The startup options in XP only show XP.Rebooted from the Ub10.10 live cd and checked that the partition is there and the OS files are there.
Any ideas why the grub menu doesnt appear?I'm assuming it's something to do with Ubuntu not seeing the RAID drive but it did install ok..
Any word on Mint Menu working on Ubuntu 11? I couldn't get it to load. I don't have the exact error, but I did allow the error report to be sent up to Conical.

View 9 Replies View RelatedHave just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine.But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months!The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again.The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?

I am trying to streamline my boot screen/GRUB Menu. I know what I want it to look like (grub_wanted.jpg), and I think I know how to get it by uninstalling a couple of things, (synaptic.jpg). Now I have too many items on the screen, and it looks cluttered to me (grub.jpg).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu on my new desktop alongside Windows 7 (each OS is on a separate drive), I seem to have run into a small problem. Let me start with what I did:
- Unplugged 1TB drive from the PSU, BIOS was not seeing my formatted (and thus empty) 500GB drive and I couldn't put it into the boot order at all with the 1TB turned on.
- Loaded up the boot CD and was able to install Ubuntu 10.1 on my 500GB drive.
- Did a bit of configuring, shut my PC off and plugged my 1TB (with Windows 7) drive back in. I tried to see if I could now see my Ubuntu drive in BIOS but nothing is there - just the Windows drive is in the list of available drives to boot from (along with DVD-ROM and USB).
This is where I've run into my problem. What I want is to have a nice GRUB boot menu at the start like any other dual-boot system but just have the two operating systems on separate drives altogether.I did it this way because I was having issues with the advanced partition menu on the boot CD so just went ahead and followed the KISS method by unplugging the Windows drive.
I was told by a friend that if I put my Ubuntu drive into the first position in my boot order and the Windows drive in the second, then I could boot into Ubuntu and run a GRUB update command (he told me to google it) and that would create the necessary GRUB that had the entries for Windows 7 and Ubuntu.Both operating systems are 64-bit, I imagine that might make a difference in whatever help you guys can offer me. I love the hell out of both OS's and want to be able to use them interchangeably.
i am having a problem with my dual boot setup. I originally installed windows XP on a 100gb hard drive, from there i downloaded and burnt ubuntu off so i could install it on my 200gb hard drive. For a little bit i struggled to even get it to install because it wouldn't recognize my onboard nvidia graphics, i ended up having to get an alt boot disk and fix it with technique in this link:

Now after the bios boot, my screen shuts off for awhile and takes me directly to the login screen for ubuntu. No Grub, no windows boot options, nothing. I tried booting windows by choosing it from the bios boot menu but all it does is hang at prompt and doesn't boot at all. I tried the live cd fix and reinstalled grub but nothing changed. What i think is happening is that it boots the Grub menu but it doesn't display it because of graphical confrontations. It hangs for about 10 seconds, the grub default time, and then turns my monitor back on to display the Ubuntu login screen.
