i've had windows all my life. heard about ubuntu 10.0. thought i tried it out. i tried using some dual installation with windows or something (im running, well WAS running vista, btw) i dont know WHAT i did. i got ubuntu working, but Windows does NOT show up in the boot menu?

View 5 Replies View Relatedi wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

When I select the Windows Vista entry in GRUB, the screen goes blank for a moment before returning me to the GRUB menu.I have tried pressing 'e' to edit the GRUB entry before booting, and what I find is that it says the root is hd0,1Since my Windows partition is sda1 in GPartEd, should that translate to, for example hd0,0 ?The only reason I want to boot into Windows in the first place is to install a BIOS upgrade from HP, which only works with their Windows software. If someone can suggest an alternative way of doing this then I won't need to boot into Windows at all.

I've just installed 11.3 on my mother's laptop. I downloaded and installed Swiftfox, but there's no evidence of it in the menu. I can double-click the Swiftfox.desktop icon in /usr/share/applications, and Swiftfox runs properly. However, it's not listed in the KDE menu.Is there a way to manually update the menu?I didn't have this problem with the previous version of openSuse on this computer. But I did a fresh install, rather than update to 11.3.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a fresh install of Natty on my Dell Studio 17 laptop. The screen on the laptop doesn't work so I have it plugged into my Panasonic TV with an HDMI cable. The only problem is that the TV is not showing the outer edges of my desktop. So, I can't see the "Applications" menu, for example, or the button to click to Logout. I'm encountering an unusual problem with GRUB 2. Whenever I start up my system, my BIOS'es load and do their thing, and then hand the show over to GRUB, which is supposed to not appear or do anything because my GRUB countdown is set to 0, but instead I get two errors like this that appear for about 5 or 10 seconds (greatly delaying startup) and then Xubuntu, the first entry on my Grub menu, loads: (I set GRUB to automatically boot my first entry):

Have just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine.But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months!The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again.The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?

I've just started out learning to program and I'm making a "Radio Scheduler" for my brother as a mini project. I wanted to make an "install" script, which would add an item to Ubuntu's Main Menu. I believe all that is necessary is to create a .desktop file and place it it /usr/share/applications/? This seemed to work fine when I tried it out on 10.10, but I've now tried it on two 10.04 systems (one virtual) and despite it being in the applications folder (so it moved in okay), it isn't showing up at all in the menu. code...
I'm not entirely sure about some of that (categories for instance), as I just used another file as a reference. But it seemed to work fine on my 10.10 system, so I don't understand why it won't show up on the others? Should be in Sound & Video if I'm correct... I'm still pretty new to Linux, so sorry if I've got anything completely wrong.
I've got wine installed and I've been using it for a while, but I just installed adobe flash but it doesn't show up in my wine menu. I know where I can find it in My Programs I just don't know where that is. Where is the virtual C: drive in wine located?

Probably already posted before; however each case usually is somehow different. I use Ubuntu only occasionally to learn how it works.
After the latest update using Update Manager, quite a few packages were installed without any problem. However GRUB2 does not show the Windows-XP(Prof) partition in the menu anymore. Now I can't boot Windows because I can't select what is not shown.

It is already the second time that GRUB2 changes the menu items as it pleases, messing up the bootmenu. How can I repair the bootmenu in order to be able to boot Windows-XP, as before the updates ?

My system had Windows Vista initially. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit initially and everything was fine. I was able to use both the OS. Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit in the same partition as Ubuntu 10.04 by dividing it into two equal halves. Now I am able to boot into 32 bit 10.10 but when I try to boot into the old 64 bit 10.04 it says unable to mount /root/proc, and some other "Unable to mount.." messages and it gives me a command prompt. I entered into 32 bit 10.10 OS and did update-grub2 and when I restart, the boot menu has no option for 64 bit 10.04 version at all... How can I restore my Ubuntu 64 bit 10.04 and boot into it..

I installed Fedora 15 on dev/sda7 (a clean partition) and I'm using the same swap for both Linux distros. I am not that new to Linux but I still need fairly detailed instructions.
My problem: Fedora does not show in the boot menu and I'm not sure how to get it there.

I know that Windows 7 is still on the system, I just can't access it.
So, as the title says Windows 7 doesn't show up in GRUB2's selection menu, but it does show my Windows XP professional option that I had before Linux and then reinstalled. After searching very long for the problem in Linux and GRUB2 I decided to boot into XP, witch gave me the option for Windows 7 or older versions of Windows -> so I eventually can boot to it! So here is the real question: How can I make an entry for Windows 7 and for Windows XP? This is because I'd like to use a theme for GRUB and it would be to stupid to make GRUB look nice if I then come to a stupid screen of the Windows loader!

View 4 Replies View Relatedi just installed Ubuntu from an ISO about a year old and of course i updated it to the latest version and when i get that screen at startup where i have a choice of which version to load i get something like this: My current version, memtest, an old installation of Ubuntu and some really old versions. The problem is i also have Windows7 and Vista installed(vista really needs to go) but i don't have either of them as a choice in the bootloader. How do i get it back? Also before the update i had it on the list.

I tried looking through some of the other posts, but I think that I need some direct help with this one. I have tried update-grub and nothing changed.
I don't use Windows often, but it is nice to have the option.
