I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop, which also has Vista installed. HOWEVER... On boot I only get five options: Ubuntu, Ubuntu (Rey), both MemTests and a Windows Recovery.Where's my Vista gone? View 5 RepliesHave just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine.But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months!The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again.The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?
Is there a way to modify the grub.cfg file to stop this problem ( all posts say dont touch this file??Or install a script to delete the grubenv file on shutdown as a workaround for me, (I have no idea how to do this whatsoever, I'm not familiar with linux at all)I did read that this problem was fixed/patched in Grub version 2, but dosn't seem.so on my system afetr I updated it when I got into Ubuntu.I couldnt find the patch or fix, I got the information I am on about from this post:URL...It seems to say it was fixed or patched by Colin Watson reading through, but I don't really understand whats being said or how to get the patch on my system if indeed there is one?Sorry for being a bit thick about all this, its a bit beyond my brain now, hope somebody can help out as I have enjoyed my brief bit of fun in Ubuntu.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my second hard drive, and now I can't boot into Vista (installed on hard drive #1). Grub2 just doesn't seem to be recognizing that there is a Windows Vista installation on the first hard drive.
I followed this guide (with Fabien's changes) because it seemed like they were having the exact same problem. But after rebooting, Vista is still not showing in the GRUB menu. In fact, the GRUB menu doesn't even show up unless I press Shift because it thinks that Ubuntu is the only OS installed on my computer.

When I was installing Ubuntu to HD2 (the 500gb one), I got a peculiar message saying that Windows was installed on it. There wasn't anything on HD2 though, because Windows Vista was most definitely installed on HD1.
However, if I chose to overwrite HD1 with Ubuntu, the message wouldn't come up. It seemed like the installer was confused as to which hard drive actually held my Windows Vista install.
I tend to update stuff slower than most - I'm still using Hardy and I probably won't upgrade to Lucid until June-ish. I wanted to test drive GRUB2 so I upgraded following instructions here:When I chainloaded GRUB2, I got a menu that only contained Ubuntu; my Windows Vista bootloader entry had disappeared. I couldn't find a sample "40_custom" entry to modify when I tried to create an entry for Vista myself. Had no problem booting into Ubuntu and I could still boot Vista from the old menu. Spent about 20 minutes on it, then I gave up and reinstalled legacy GRUB.

I've just installed 11.3 on my mother's laptop. I downloaded and installed Swiftfox, but there's no evidence of it in the menu. I can double-click the Swiftfox.desktop icon in /usr/share/applications, and Swiftfox runs properly. However, it's not listed in the KDE menu.Is there a way to manually update the menu?I didn't have this problem with the previous version of openSuse on this computer. But I did a fresh install, rather than update to 11.3.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a fresh install of Natty on my Dell Studio 17 laptop. The screen on the laptop doesn't work so I have it plugged into my Panasonic TV with an HDMI cable. The only problem is that the TV is not showing the outer edges of my desktop. So, I can't see the "Applications" menu, for example, or the button to click to Logout. I'm encountering an unusual problem with GRUB 2. Whenever I start up my system, my BIOS'es load and do their thing, and then hand the show over to GRUB, which is supposed to not appear or do anything because my GRUB countdown is set to 0, but instead I get two errors like this that appear for about 5 or 10 seconds (greatly delaying startup) and then Xubuntu, the first entry on my Grub menu, loads: (I set GRUB to automatically boot my first entry):

I've just started out learning to program and I'm making a "Radio Scheduler" for my brother as a mini project. I wanted to make an "install" script, which would add an item to Ubuntu's Main Menu. I believe all that is necessary is to create a .desktop file and place it it /usr/share/applications/? This seemed to work fine when I tried it out on 10.10, but I've now tried it on two 10.04 systems (one virtual) and despite it being in the applications folder (so it moved in okay), it isn't showing up at all in the menu. code...
I'm not entirely sure about some of that (categories for instance), as I just used another file as a reference. But it seemed to work fine on my 10.10 system, so I don't understand why it won't show up on the others? Should be in Sound & Video if I'm correct... I'm still pretty new to Linux, so sorry if I've got anything completely wrong.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy system had Windows Vista initially. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit initially and everything was fine. I was able to use both the OS. Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit in the same partition as Ubuntu 10.04 by dividing it into two equal halves. Now I am able to boot into 32 bit 10.10 but when I try to boot into the old 64 bit 10.04 it says unable to mount /root/proc, and some other "Unable to mount.." messages and it gives me a command prompt. I entered into 32 bit 10.10 OS and did update-grub2 and when I restart, the boot menu has no option for 64 bit 10.04 version at all... How can I restore my Ubuntu 64 bit 10.04 and boot into it..

I installed Fedora 15 on dev/sda7 (a clean partition) and I'm using the same swap for both Linux distros. I am not that new to Linux but I still need fairly detailed instructions.

As I've heard stories of using Gparted to resize a Windows partition doesn't allow Windows Vista to boot up as it removes a crucial part of the operating system? I have adequate space to give to Ubuntu on my NTFS partition. May I also add that to install Ubuntu I had to use the partitioner that came with the installer, because the Windows Disk Manager wouldn't let me partition the NTFS drive, because it Denied my Access.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm fairly new to Ubuntu and I like it a lot. However, there's a graphical error which started to happen after the very first bootup. The startup screen (the purple one with the 5 dots that appear) isn't showing anymore. It is replaced by some console technical guff scrolling down my screen (which isn't a problem, because Ubuntu itself works fine, but it just looks a bit rough). Again, on shutdown, it displays some amalgamated mix of more technical jargon, and a terribly lo-res version of the shutdown screen.
Is there any way I can fix this?
Recently I had to a complete system install of ubunty 11.04 and win7. I installed unbutu first, then win7. Well when it was all said and done, I figured when I started, I would get the option to either boot in to ubuntu or win7,all I get is win7.Now I downloaded and installed EasyBCD2.0 configured it, but when I boot again I get either win7 or ubuntu. But when I choose ubuntu it doesn't show nothing. So how to I find ubuntu and get it to boot.

During installation, LILO gave an error (I tried installing both to MBR and root, both times the error was about something like "root: (N6").
Then I did the following

Each time I boot I have to restart samba to see the shared printer on other windows machine. I tought it was the cups problem listed on the forum, but I'm not sure anymore if it's related!Could it be related to the service sequence? I don't know how to look at the service load sequence in ubuntu?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI created a Fedora 13 x86 live image on USB using [URL] I've set it to boot using the USB and when it does I see the 10 sec countdown (or the options if I press a key), I tried all the options to boot the image but the screen just turns black for a few seconds and then the the monitor goes into "power saving mode" and nothing happens (I waited like 10 minutes). What's going on? I am trying to install fedora into an empty (secondary) HD, in the main HD I only have a win XP, and I don't want to burn a cd/dvd that's why I am trying to boot the USB.
