I am installing a cluster which is hidden from the rest of the world and there is no router either froma general login node. I would therefore require a local repository of the updates to CentOS5.4. When I checked I only found instructions for a full mirror. As I have no room and neither the human resources to setup and maintain a full-blown mirror, this is not a solution. However if I try to find updates for 5.4 to download in a repository-type of way I fail to find a solution. Maybe I am just not looking in the right places.

OK. I've successfully mirrored the Karmic Koala repositories. Now I have, and will have as time goes on, various computers I'll want to install Ubuntu on and point at the repository mirrors (Karmic now, Lucid later). Can I create a modified Live CD that will set up out computers from the beginning with /etc/apt/sources.list pointing at our mirrors, so we don't have to edit it later or tell people to edit it later? I've looked around and not found instructions on how to do it so far.

I am trying to install apache on centos-5-i386 (# yum install httpd) and get the following error:
==========================
[root@IDK3 /]# yum install httpd
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
* base: centos.mirrors.tds.net
[Code].....
Edit: The url works if I leave out "repomd.xml" at the end; and the repomd.xml is exactly in that folder? i have downloaded the file but don't know how to use it.

Well my local LUG has developed a cooperation with the university. Their major is music. So we would like to develop a local repository to help the updates to be faster. I checked the How to set up a local Yum Repository on Fedora 8. I guess it's same with 12.
My questions are:
1. How much space do we need?
2. Since we might setup repository for another distro, is it a way to be done with other distro? The above address describes only how to make it in Fedora.
3. Since we'll have it installed and will be usefull for the university, can we make it available to the rest of the world? Maybe contact someone for this.

Last week I successfully configured a local repository for CentOS. I did it because I'm teaching a course with this distro. I am also teaching another course with opensuse, sadly, I could not configure a local repository for opensuse. I thought this would be easier. Local internet connection is very slow, so I need to configure the local repository. I have searched for information on the novell site and find nothing.

I've made a terrible mistake that I changed files in /etc/yum.repo.d and /etc/yum.conf.Now I can't get update by yum update, saying that ERROR: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: base. Please verify its path and try again. Now I'd like to reset everything to default. What can I do now?

Does anyone know if the Yum fastestmirror plugin only makes decisions based on latency to pick the best host or does it measure bandwidth? On my laptop for the last few weeks I've been getting super slow yum updates (3.5kB/sec), when I force it to use the baseurl it runs as fast as I'd expect (160+KB/sec).
So the fastestmirror plugin doesn't seem to work unless maybe it's measuring latency as fast but the actual download speed is slow. If so, fastestmirror plugin should really take both into account.

Almost every other time I run yum update, I'm getting mirror problems - this is losing all my confidence in Fedora for several reasons: a) it's wasting time - what should be 1-2 minute updates are taking 5-10 minutes and often (like tonight) not even completing b) since it keeps hanging and switiching mirrors during downloads I wonder if the updates are coming thru okay c) the fact this is not being seriously addressed makes me wonder re Fedora quality. Add to that the constant and real annoying kernel errors popping up re network manager and sierra wireless (even when my sprint card is not plugged in).

I set up a git repository on the live site of my website using git init. Then I created the same repo on my local machine using git clone command. Then I made a few changes and committed them to on my local repository. Then I tried to use git push origin alongside the ssh path to my repository on the remote machine to update my live website. However, I noticed that git-push only changes the head of my git repository on the remote machine and it doesn't change any file.
In order to update my remote repository I have to issue the following command after I use git-push.
PHP Code:
git reset --hard HEAD
This is a two-step process for committing changes to the live site. I was wondering if it's possible to merge these two steps in one to make life a little bit easier?
Note that, I'm the only one working on this project (sometimes from my laptop, sometimes from my desktop), so I trust all the commits.

We have several linux hosts at our site. I would like to set one of the servers to offer a local update service rather than have each host contact the public servers for update information. This would greatly speed the updates for each host since we only have a DSL connection (about 1.2Mbps transfer rate). Is there a tutorial somewhere that describes how to set up a "shadow" update server?

I have several servers with access only to a local network and on not to the web in general.I was wondering if it is possible so run a local update server (on open SUSE 11.3 desktop) on a machine with outside access and have the servers with only LAN access update using that machine. If this is possible can someone point me to a HOW TO or just tell me if there is a configuration panel in YAST2.I have found in google mentions of a YOU server in SUSE10 but cannot find this in 11.3

All of the 5.4 mirrors I've checked out have new packages in the updates repo added on 10/26 and 10/27, for both i386 and x86_64, but the repodata files haven't been updated since 10/19 so yum and reposync don't see them. how long this should usually take to update?

I've setup a Lamp Server for Testing, The Lamp Server is Up & Running on CentOs 5.5
I am now trying to setup a VSFTP server where local users can upload files to there home directory so that Apache can serve web pages straight from the directories of system user home/accounts giving users the ability to run their own web sites which are hosted off the main server [tutorial here: [url]
So far i have been able to serve/display index.html files from the users home directory [url] but so far i cant upload files to any user home directory, every time i try to upload a file with filezilla i get this error message: 553 Could not create file. Critical file transfer error
I have searched online for similar problems like mine and so far i've tried alot of the solution but none seem to work. I'm confused, dont know where i went wrong, i put the users in a group called ftpusers and here are the permissions on the users (test, ftpuser & testftp) home directory. have a look an tell me where i went wrong :(
Also the root directory where the web pages are served from is called public_html here are the permissions
Here is my vsftp.conf file can someone check it to see if i made any errors in there:

I've noticed that Synaptic shows VLC 1.0.6 as the latest version of VLC. Except this is not true and 1.0.6 is way out of date. Version 1.0.6 does not even have a REPEAT icon button for the control panel. But newer versions do. Running Windows I can download VLC version 1.1.5 and make use of a REPEAT icon.Is there a way to update the repository? Or a way to tell Ubuntu developers that the VLC repository is way out of date and needs updating? I'm running 10.04 LTS--I thought this was supposed to deliver longterm updates?

I have two servers. One of them has a svn server running and another hosting projects.
I have a daily cronjob updating the projects -- ie running svn update, rebuild etc.
Now, my cronjob on the remote server works.
However, a similar cronjob running on the local server for local projects (ie the same server as svn) is instead displaying a "svn: not working copy".
I double checked the paths, permissions and user info and if the script is launched manually, it works fine.
Deploying the same thing remotely works.
I even tried using file:/// (suggested here http://www.hightekhosting.com.au/myaccount/knowledgebase/90/Using-SubversionorSVN-on-cPanel-Servers.html) but still nothing.

I've been looking for a good tutorial for setting up a BIND DNS server for my local network. What I want to do is..Have BIND running on my home server receiving all DNS requests.Have certain zones (my.zone.lan) pointing to custom IP addresses (I.E. server.lan points to 192.168.{server IP})Zones that don't exist should be passed on to OpenDNS for processing.
