Feb 9, 2011In the past week or so I've noticed some weird network behaviour. I find accessing some sites such as Amazon, Paypal, and Bigstockphoto really slow. Sometimes the page will not load at all. Other sites are fine. The problem sites are not a problem for others on my LAN at home. When I try to open the problem sites, I can see in Firestarter blocked connections coming from 2.1(8/9).xxx.xxx on various ports such as 36007. This only happens for the problem sites. I attached a typical output from firestarter.
This happens with Firfeox or Chrome. Using Ubuntu 10.10

Apr 23, 2010I am now very confused as to why i cant login on any secured sites since my firewall is setup to masquerade technique in iptables. Of course i can browse normally to any normal http connection. I attached my firewall script.
I setup squid on the same box and configured browser to use that proxy. All is well, i can browse and login both normal and secured sites (ie yahoo mail)

Apr 27, 2011I have just installed ubuntu 10.1 along side my windows xp. It installed nicely and boots up promptly. When I try to go to a web site, it takes forever to load. It can take up to 1 minute to load a page. Why is that. I thought that Linux was supposed to be faster. When I go back to windows, I don't have this problem.

Jan 14, 2011I dual boot XP and FC14 and have 2 routers. I can connect and ping one of these routers when I'm in FC and I have an IP address I just can't load any websites. When I connect to the other router (my main router) it works fine. When I boot into XP and connect to the problem router I can load pages fine. It's only when I'm on FC14 and connect to the problem router that I can't load pages even though I have an IP and can ping around.

Jun 16, 2010A few months back my previous computer went west and I've only just got a replacement, and having had enough of Windoze to last me a lifetime, I decided on Linux and and selected Ubuntu, keeping the Internet account current in the interim with a couple of topups done from Internet cafes. Problem. I'm on mobile broadband, Virgin to be exact. The machine recognizes the modem; the Virgin icon is plainly visible on the desktop, but that's as far as it goes, I simply can't connect, though I think the machine is trying to.I set up a mobile broadband connection and I've edited it every whichaway, but to no avail. It's only Basic though, I haven't tried Advanced. Should I try Advanced, and while I'm at it, what else could causing my problems?

Jul 4, 2010I do a lot of work on Ancient Near East Languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Akkadian, Hittite, Ugaritic...), and I need a lot of diacritic marks. Following these instructions and using the character map, I've managed to get everything I wanted. There's just one fly left in my ointment. There is a standard for transcribing aspirated Hebrew consonants which involves putting a line below the character.I can make them using a combining character (U0331), but this is the rub: with all the other diacritics, I have to add them before the character, and with this set, I have to add it afterwards. This doesn't seem like a big deal, but it's a huge pain in the butt when your actually using it. I tried using combining characters with all my diacritics, but they don't work right with capital letters, so that was a no-go The combining characters also do screwy things with formating and spacing sometimes.
For all the dead-keys, there is a normal kind of formating that X11 uses. A grave("`") is "grave", and a dead grave is "dead_grave". A macron ("�") is "macron" and a dead macron is "dead_macron"... not rocket science. Anyway, I've tried all kinds of possible names for this character with the word "dead" in front of them, and no luck. I've tried a fair number of Unicode codes, and no luck with them either. I even tried "dead_U005F" (U005F the normal symbol).

I managed to download jre-6u25-linux-x64.bin and saved it on my desktop. Then a ran jre-6u25-linux-x64.bin and it created a directory on my desktop called jre-6.0_25. Within the directory there the following subdirectories: bin, javaws, lib, man, and plugin.

Mar 15, 2010I am running Ubuntu 9.04 32bit on a dual boot (XP) computer. No internet problems in windows, and I am currently typing this post on my wifes HP laptop running 9.10. I have no browsing ability on the desktop running 9.04, and updates don't work (in details, every other line fails) But, I can bring up Google, and search it, pictures and all, but cannot go to different sites (ebay, hotmail, amazon as the first few i try). Also, my pidgin works fine, as I am talking on it now. I have tried to turn off ipv6 in Firefox and ubuntu, neither doing anything noticeable.

Feb 2, 2009I have an odd Linux problem. Changed ISP recently -- Windows NT4 & W95 work fine. Linux has worked fine on previous ISPs, but on the newest ISP, I can connect successfully on Linux, but can only communicate w/maybe one out of 10 sites (Google, for ex.). Mostly I get "cannot connect to site". Some points:
-Linux is Slackware w/kernel build 2.4.26.
-No settings changed from Linux setup that worked fine on previous ISPs.
-/var/log/Log file says PPP connects via CHAP successfully & no problems..
-I don't see any similarity on the few sites I can connect to -- seems random.
-ISP is useless -- say they "don't support Linux".
-Using Firefox & Konqueror browsers.

It's possible to block some sites using DNS in Windows Domain controller, but users have the rights to change DNS and bypass the rule. Editing HOSTS file doesn't workThen I tried using Avast antivirus Site Block feature, but that doesn't work on any browser except Mozilla. We have to use Epic and Mozilla Firefox.We can't use a dedicated hardware firewall due to budget constraints and the fact that we have multiple ADSL lines for internet. No single gateway.

Jan 25, 2010I'm a recent convert from windows machines to linux. From the first distro I tried I was blown away by how great linux is. But opensuse, while it has taken me a little bit longer to figure a few things out, has by far the best. It even allows me to configure my touchpad so it doesn't drive me insane.On to my actual problem. the portable harddrive placed all my files on to when switching from windows mounts but shows up empty.I know the files are there because they show up when i plug the harddrive into my ps3.
I put the all the files i wanted to save from windows into a folder called portableharddrive (i think) and put that folder on to the portable harddrive.if i do a directory search by running the drive in terminal this is what i get.Can anyone help me find my files or do i have to wait untill my girlfriend gets her computer back?

Now I have one asterisk server which is behind that gateway I mean on my local subnet which pass through my linux gateway. Voip server having 4mb up n 4 mb down limit. Clients having 512kbps and upload 2mb.

Now my question is regarding skype calling. Since skype uses port 80, does it mean that it passes its request via proxy or direct and for safe side I've changed skype incoming port to 443 which squid does not see it. How much and width does skype use for calling in that case. Some one told me that it using squid to pass its request which I don't agree.

Apr 13, 2009I can ping certain websites, such as Adobe.com, but I cannot access them via http (i.e. through firefox or yum). Some websites work through http, like Google, while others don't. The ones that don't are always the same.
What really hurts here is I cannot yum to all repos i'd like to. Since the same sites cannot be accessed through firefox, I imagine there is some underlying problem with my system's HTTP setup.
My windows machine on the same network works fine. I have had this problem since I installed Fedora 10 about 4 months ago. I'd rather not reinstall as nothing really seems broken (aside from this http issue), my system is completely up to date.
If I use a public proxy website I can get to the sites I can't connect to directly. I've followed a FAQ from mozilla for Firefox that hasn't helped, but I don't think its a Firefox issue since yum suffers as well. I also followed the fedora FAQ and I have been using OpenDNS servers.

Nov 9, 2010For a while now I've got a problem when surfing the internet. Everythings fine for let's say 15 minutes and then all of a sudden it takes about 1 minute to load a -random- page, once it has loaded, everthing's fine again. Transmission does not seem to have this problem. I'll double check this. Looking thru the forum I found the following "solutions". None of which has worked for me up to now:
- disable ipv6 in firefox
- set method under network manager to "Automatic (DHCP) addresses only" and use google or OpenDNS dns servers
- change resolv.conf (comparable to the second one I guess)

Sep 1, 2011Strangest thing...yesterday my 11.04 box lost the ability to access anything external. I can ssh to the box from outside my network, and all other boxes on my network are fine, but this one box can't hit anything external. If I attempt to ping a site it's doing the same resolution, but no packets are delivered.
Up until yesterday it was running fine, and I didn't make any changes to my home network or install any updates. Totally stumped.
Edit: this is a wired connection with a static internal IP.
