Ubuntu :: Difficulty Connecting To Internet?
Jun 16, 2010
A few months back my previous computer went west and I've only just got a replacement, and having had enough of Windoze to last me a lifetime, I decided on Linux and and selected Ubuntu, keeping the Internet account current in the interim with a couple of topups done from Internet cafes. Problem. I'm on mobile broadband, Virgin to be exact. The machine recognizes the modem; the Virgin icon is plainly visible on the desktop, but that's as far as it goes, I simply can't connect, though I think the machine is trying to.I set up a mobile broadband connection and I've edited it every whichaway, but to no avail. It's only Basic though, I haven't tried Advanced. Should I try Advanced, and while I'm at it, what else could causing my problems?

My flatmates are all able to connect. However, I am able to connect from work both wirelessly and through an ethernet cable.

I created a Live CD with Ubuntu 10.4 Desktop, in which everything seems to work except Firefox, or internet connections in general. I've tried several other Linux distros with the same results. The DSL modem is on and working (USB Westell Wirespeed duel connect modem), works with Windows XP (native OS on this computer) but not with this live cd.
Ive been inside the network manager, and have only one connection setup which is DSL and automatically connect. But when it looks for a connection, none is found (the tab on the upper right corner of the desktop with the exclamation mark).
The live cd connects at work, but it's through a server and connected to that via ethernet, so that's a completely different setup.
I've seen countless other instances of connectivity issues, and it all seems to involve hours of testing, command line editing, and other things that more often than not produce no results.

I have chrome an it works fine, but firefox wont load any pages, just white and blank. For Chrome I have been using putty and a plugin called switchy to use internet through another computer and may have messed firefox up when trying to install a similar plugin. I uninstalled all plugins and still had the problem. I then tried:
sudo apt-get remove --purge firefox
and then re downloaded the new firefox 4.

I do a lot of work on Ancient Near East Languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Akkadian, Hittite, Ugaritic...), and I need a lot of diacritic marks. Following these instructions and using the character map, I've managed to get everything I wanted. There's just one fly left in my ointment. There is a standard for transcribing aspirated Hebrew consonants which involves putting a line below the character.I can make them using a combining character (U0331), but this is the rub: with all the other diacritics, I have to add them before the character, and with this set, I have to add it afterwards. This doesn't seem like a big deal, but it's a huge pain in the butt when your actually using it. I tried using combining characters with all my diacritics, but they don't work right with capital letters, so that was a no-go The combining characters also do screwy things with formating and spacing sometimes.
For all the dead-keys, there is a normal kind of formating that X11 uses. A grave("`") is "grave", and a dead grave is "dead_grave". A macron ("") is "macron" and a dead macron is "dead_macron"... not rocket science. Anyway, I've tried all kinds of possible names for this character with the word "dead" in front of them, and no luck. I've tried a fair number of Unicode codes, and no luck with them either. I even tried "dead_U005F" (U005F the normal symbol).

I have a problem which is connecting automatically to my spwireless. On my windows, my schools provide me the disc which contains several .cer files and a automated batch files to copy the .cer files to the root folders. I can choose to use the other network but in using that, i have to manually connect compared to using the spwireless. Anyway, my problem is that, how do i add the .cer files and to where so when i connect to the network it will look there for the cert. Because when i manually connect, only one cer can be chosen.

I recently installed XBMC and Boxee on my Linux laptop, but neither of them are connecting to the internet. Since I'd like to try XBMC first, I'll talk about that here. When I run the program, I do not have a Live TV icon or link on the side. I can see my Music, Programs, Settings, Pictures, Video and Weather links on the sidebar, but my Weather page is blank as in I do not see any weather forecasts or whatever else ought to be on that page. I thought that maybe since I was running XBMC as a user there might be some permissions issues, so I ran "sudo xbmc" and received an error message "Do_Wait: DRMWaitBlank returned -1, IRQs Don't Seem to be working correctly. Try adjusting the vBlank_mode configuration parameter." No idea what that means. I've tried connecting both via Ethernet and my WiFi.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04. Prior to this I had been using Ubuntu 9.10. In 10.04 I am just unable to connect to the net using Mozilla FireFox. But otherwise, Update Manager, Google Chromium are all connecting smoothly. Which implies that there is nothing wrong with my internet connection. So now that this is a Mozilla FireFox problem.

Before I reinstalled Ubuntu (this time allocating the entire disk to it as I never really used Windows any more) I backed up the entire contents of my /home folder using Deja Dup. Now that I am done reinstalling Ubuntu I am trying to restore the backup. However, when it actually begins restoring the backup, it says "Restore failed: failed with an unknown error".

When I set my background in Ubuntu 9.04, I cannot find a method (for dual monitors) to either replicate the same image on each screen or set separate backgrounds scaled on each screen. I am using the gnome desktop, but I'm not sure how to find out which version I am running.

I have an AWL6075 Golden N Wireless Mini USB Adapter from Airlink, and I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. (Kernel 2.6.31-20-generic) I've learned that in order to get this to work, I needed to download this firmware update: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/373876...8192sfw.bin.gz and copy it into /lib/firmware.I have also needed to download and install the drivers at http://www.filestube.com/f76673d157e2ab6203ea/go.htmlI've even Edited my connection to make it available to all users. This is great, and it gets my internet running. Unfortunately, I seem to have to make the module, and insmod the module 8712u.ko everytime I boot up. I know I had it set in 9.04 to be able to do this on boot up, but in 9.04 I didn't have to re-make it everytime.

I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday. When I see the network tab, it shows it is connected to the web via eth0. I could download all the packages for updates. But when I try to connect to internet via Firefox, or by evolution or other software,I am unable to connect. The configuration of the ethernet card is proper as I checked that via terminal window. It is a peculiar problem, where I can download update pakages but unable to connect via browser or email client.when I ping to ubuntu.com is shows it is healthy and successful.I have a Acer dual core laptop, and connect to internet via wired lan .

I setup a network bridge on pc A, with windows 7 installed on it, using windows default bridging tool. I connected computer B to computer A and Im trying to connect to the internet through the network bridge on computer A. Computer B (client) has two OS's installed, win XP and linux(tried with different distributions, didnt work). On windows XP everything is working, when i try to ping the router (after computer A) it also responds. On linux system nothing is working, and im not quite sure why.
I set up linux to receive IP adress from DHCP, which is router in this case (behind computer A), same way windows XP was configured. I decided to ask here, because I couldn't find anything on the net. My guess is windows-made bridge supports only windows-OS's but that would be kind of strange (its just a software bridge).

just recently I made the move back to Ubuntu from Windows. Upon re-installing I noticed a problem with me connecting to the internet. Previously on Windows I had updated my Ethernet Adapter driver, upon installing I would have to disable and re-enable the device to let my computer have access to the internet. My problem here is how would I go about fixing this on Ubuntu so I can have internet access on Ubuntu
