Ubuntu :: Black Screen After Running Apt-get Update?

Aug 2, 2011

I got sick of unity yesterday and tried to install Gnome3. While doing this, i ran apt-get update. I believe that this updated my xorg to 1.1+ (or whatever) making it incompatible with the proprietary ATI drivers I'm running. So I tried a whole bunch of stuff, from reinstalling the drivers from the ttyl1 prompt, to doing startx from the command line and using synaptic to remove the proprietary drivers and install radeon, etc, etc.I think the issue right now is that there are bits of the proprietary driver left that are messing with the open source driver. Whenever I do startx, i get artifacting all over the screen, which never seems to go away.

Ubuntu :: Black Screen In Lucid (10.04) After Patch Update?

Sep 2, 2010

Yesterday, 9/1/2010, I received a bunch of patch updates for 10.04 (64-bit) and applied them to my laptop (Dell Latitude E6510, Intel Core i5). After they applied, it asked me if I wanted to reboot now or later. I chose later to finish my work and then shut my laptop off. This morning, I turned it on, only to get a black screen during bootup and also during login. I know it's working behind the scenes because I can hear the drum sound when it's ready to login and I can still press the power button and hit enter to shut it down. I tried using Alt+F2->F12 but it would only show a black screen.

My temporary workaround was to hold the shift button during startup to get the grub menu and then select the older 2.6.32-23 kernel to bootup instead of the newer 2.6.32-24. I am able to boot ok in the older kernel and it's working fine, but I don't know what is causing the problem for the newer one and cannot boot into that one.

I believe I was running 2.6.32-24 fine up until I received a bundle of patches to apply to my system. So the question is, is there a way to figure out what patches were applied in yesterday's bundle so I can back them out? If not, how can I fix this so I can run the newer updated kernel?

Ubuntu :: After Applying An Update, Getting A Black Screen At Login?

Mar 17, 2011

After applying an update about two or three days ago, I restarted my system and now I'm getting a black screen at login. I can hear the brief drum sound clip that plays when the login dialog box pops up, but the screen is completely black and I can't see anything. I'm still able to access low graphics mode via the fail-safe option in the recovery mode menu. So far I've tried the following commands in the terminal:

Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-

Fedora :: Update To F12 - Screen Black After Reboot

May 10, 2010

I just updated from FC 10 to FC 12 via install/upgrade disk, and when re-booted the screen is then black (at the point that it should display logins). I think it may be due to nvidia driver in FC 10 not being upgraded, because I think I compiled it from nvidia rather from yum install. Anybody else have this problem? BTW, it is a dual boot with Win XP, but has never caused a similar problem before.

Fedora Installation :: Getting The Black Screen After Update?

Sep 1, 2010

yesterday I updated the system, and that involved kernel 2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64. After rebooting, the progress bar goes fine, but when finished the screen flickers a little and goes black. I can't switch to other terminals via Ctrl + Alt + Fx, so I'm using remote access via ssh. I thought it could be nvidia issue, so I updated kmod modules with rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-testing, and when booting nothing complains, but I'm still getting black screen. Xorg log doesn't seems to complain (no errors (EE)).

Ubuntu :: After Video Driver Update - Black Screen On Boot

Sep 2, 2010

My Machine: Lenovo T400 laptop, 9.04 ubuntu

My problem: while working on my laptop the system Offered an update to my ATI video card............so being the nube that I am I said go ahead and install it............yep that f'd it up. it ran for a while then froze up to the point I had to hard boot the machine. on restart the desktop splash/load screen displays but nothing else afterwards. I can get into restore mode and even terminal but can't seem to find anything........there is an autofix video option but that did not work either.

I spent a week loading and configuring this thing and do not want to start back from scratch...........I have too much stuff to lose on a new install. funny thing is that I just had set the system to do a complete backup of the ubuntu instance for tonight so I would have some way to restore this if something happened...........well it happend before the backup ran tonight........go figure.

Is there a way to reload the default system without loosing my files and such? I would just have to load vmware back on and some other programs but I a okay with that.

One day, after a month or so, after original installation I got a notification that new updates are available. So, I installed all updates. At the end there was a notification: Update is successful, please reboot. After reboot I got a black screen with the header:

GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu7(I hope it's not a ubuntu version of windows blue death screen). I could install 10.04 from scratch, but I can not do it after every update.

Fedora Installation :: Black Screen After Automatic Update?

Jun 25, 2009

I should have know, it's named after a windows "feature".On my laptop (Acer Aspire 5310) Fedora 10 offered me an automatic update to Fedora 11. Because I trust any automatic update Fedora brings to me (it's tested right) I automatically pressed yes. It started some downloads and everything seems to run pretty smooth. Then I had to reboot the computer, press that button as well.... and it reboots into Fedora 10 (untill the end of the bar). After that I have no clue what happens, because before X is started I get a black screen with nothing on it, even ESC doesn't do anything :O I don't even get the "_" to indicate the laptop is doing anything.

Fedora :: Black Screen When Booted After Kernel Update

Feb 1, 2010

I just rebooted from an yum update, which updated my kernel 2.6.31-something to kernel 2.6.32-whatever-is-up-to-date-in-testing. My disk layout was LVM2+encrypted root. When I rebooted it prompted me for the encryption password as always. After I entered the correct password the loading screen (progress bar) finishes up as usual. Then, the screen is black.

It just stays in console resolution, but its just black. No typing, no chars, no X-mode, no errors, no VT-switches, nothing... just black. I remember to have started at 2.6.27-something and never had to kernel-update problems, so I dont know why it's annoying me now with todays update. I cant work with the machine any more.

Server :: Booting On New Kernel After Update - Screen Keeps Black

Jul 20, 2011

I've got a problem with my Ubuntu Server 11.04 amd64, I think the problem comes from GRUB 2. Here is my problem : I updated my server and I now have Linux 2.6.38-10-server (in addition to 2.6.38-8) and, when I try to boot on version "10", I think I have a Kernel Panic because the screen keeps black and there is no use of the HDD (I can ear it working with version "8"). I also looked at /boot/grub/grub.cfg and I didn't saw any diference between the lines for v10 and those for v8 (except for "8">"10" of course).

I tried with Recovery Mode too, with this result : Loading Linux 2.6.38-10-server... Loading initial ramdisk...

> No use of the HDD (I don't ear it), and it's "frozen", can't do anyting but reboot it by ACPI (nothing happend when hitting "Num Lock") Another question : can we have no submenus in Grub2?

Debian Multimedia :: X Broken After Update - Screen Remains Black

Dec 20, 2010

So I'm pretty awful at keeping Debian up to date, I guess. I'm using cron-apt to fetch updates every night, then apply them whenever I get around to it. Well, I neglected that last part for a month or two, and after some routine downtime to clear the case of dust, I decided it was time to upgrade. So I ran the command, everything checked out fine, and I was on my merry way. Until a half-hour ago when I accidentally shutdown the computer (I use the same zsh prompt on each computer, so I got them confused.) I turned it back on, only to be greeted with a black screen after all the services started up.

Everything works: ircd, MPD, etc. EXCEPT, of course, X. At first I thought the update broke SLIM, but after checking htop and doing a killall slim, it doesn't appear to be running (the screen remains black.) I hit Control-Alt-f2 to get to get back to a terminal, then tried doing startx, which freezes the computer entirely. All the network services stop, I can't SSH in, etc. It's dead. If I'm not mistaken, Xorg.0.log should say something, but I'm not a huge expert on it. The last line isn't an error, I can tell you that. So what's the deal here? apt-get remove xorg and start over?

Fedora Installation :: Boot Freezes At Black Screen After Update

Mar 12, 2009

Tried the DVD install for 10. Install went fine other than it take for freakin ever, but after an 1 hour install, the update wanted to install 1675 or so updates. I let those updates install. 5 hours later the updates were done. Rebooted and now it freezes at a blank screen right after the 3 scrolling bars. System is older AMD 3000+, 1 GIG RAM with NVidia 5700 video card.

I did try and search some. But the only thing I could find was something about editing my grub file for a scan=sync setting (the information was basically gibberish to me. No clue what it was talking about or how I would edit a file on a system that won't boot). I tried to recover mode off the live CD. It had some options that said you could type Linux command line arguments, but whenever it got to the sysimage it says Linux isn't a command.

My problem is this, I was updating Fedora using yum, the updates were in the process of installing when I got up and tripped over my power cord and of course cut power to my computer killing it and interrupting the installation. I plug my computer back in and boot it back up. I make it to the blue Fedora loading screen with the blank Fedora symbol that fills with white while loading; loads fine but before the user login screen appear Fedora melts down. The screen goes black, the cursor appears with the circle loading timer, and some form of terminal is there were I can enter text but no commands like SU or whatever seems to work.

Ubuntu :: Stuck On Black Screen With (mouse) Cursor After Grub And A Purple Screen?

Jul 21, 2011

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 today as the main OS on my laptop.I had deleted my XP partition, and repartitioned it according to a guide I had found. (http:url)......Basically it was setup like this: 500mb ext2 primary partition, has the grub folder, I believe this is either the '/' partition, or the '/boot' partition 2gb swap space logical partition

10gb ext4 logical partition -- this is either the '/' or the '/boot', it contains the 'bin, boot, cdrom, dev' etc folders 243gb (the rest of my hard drive, with the exception of a partition that contains documents and files from my XP OS, formatted to NTFS) ext4, this is the one that has all my desktop/documents/etc folders. After Ubuntu was done installing, I had some message pop up about installing an ATI proprietary driver for my ATI graphics card (an ATI Radeon HD 4330, I believe, I may have messed that number up). I installed it and rebooted, no problem.

Next, I had another update window pop up with 198 items checked and ready to download and install. I went through all of this, and rebooted, again, no problem.Next thing I did was install some apps that were essential for me to have to use for my work (an ide, chat programs, etc). No problem with any of that.Last thing to install was the OSE Virtualbox, and then I installed WindowsXP Pro and Windows Vista Business, then installed the guest addition addon for VB. This all worked without any issues whatsoever.

Time goes on, and I notice my computer is heating up much more than (seemingly) normal. I begin to wonder if its my graphics card. So I shut down the computer and let it cool down. Reboot, and no problem, still working fine. Then I opened a couple of apps and tried a simple game (can't remember the name) I believe it was a simple 3d topdown, as I wanted to test my graphics card. This is where things seemed to start to go wrong. My laptop began hanging, not even allowing me to access the terminal via ctrl+alt+f2. The screen flashed and I saw the blue/green/grey fuzz that I get when the graphics card is starting to heat up too much. Then everything hangs and I can't do anything at all, including move the mouse. I did a hard reboot (I believe this is what you call pulling the plug/pressing the power button, correct me if I'm wrong). I then rebooted, saw a chkdisk, then it booted seemingly normal, but it hung right after the purple screen after the grub screen.

This is pretty much where I'm at right now. I strongly suspect the fault is with the ATI drivers, but have been completely unsuccessful in my attempts to fix it. I've googled just about everything I could think of, along with searching these forums. I've tried just about everything listed in the forums, but to no avail.I've tried the commands that are supposed to purge the ati drivers, but all I get are errors that say they can't remove the 'virtual drivers'.

Right now I'm booting off a live cd, so I know the computer still works fine, just not my actual installed OS. I'd really like to get the issue resolved without having to reinstall, as it took quite awhile just to get it usable in the first place, but this has already taken so much time, I may just resort to that if we can't solve it any other way. Got too much work to catch up on as it is.As a re-instated note, perhaps if you have any tips, but not particularly about fixing the OS, my laptop (I'm strongly guessing my graphics card) is heating up much more than normal, compared to that when XP was installed. Is this more than likely just a driver issue, as is the rest of it? Also, I did have Compiz installed, though I didn't choose for it to be installed, I believe it came pre-installed. I've heard it could cause some issues, though I have no idea as to the validity or relation to this particular issue.

Edit:
I just remembered while searching for a solution, I found a post somewhere that said something about the information not being sent to the monitor from the graphics card properly, thus no desktop. I'm guessing that'd still fall under the driver issues, but again, I'm unsure. I would think that wouldn't be entirely true anyway, since I can still see my mouse fine, just no desktop, only a black screen.

Ubuntu :: Crashing - No Reason Monitor Will Go Black Then On The Screen It Will Be At A Terminal Screen

Nov 30, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 running kernel .26 installed on my Dell Dimension 2350 with 512mb of memory. The problem I have been having is, When I am using the computer mostly Internet stuff for no reason the monitor will go black then on the screen it will be at a terminal screen, kind of like when you start up the computer, I don't remember what is all on it but the last thing in the list was: checking battery state: OK after that the screen will flash in multiple colors and then it goes into a loop of just black screen than a colorful flash and back over to a black screen. the only way I can fix that is by holding down the power button. this will happen mostly on face-book on the games and just on the profile page, but it does happen just checking my gmail or play solitaire it does this around 4-8 times a day.
