Jan 21, 2010I have just installed 9.10 on an old Dell C610 laptop as I had to install a new hard drive and didn't have the old XP licence number or COA!
Anyway, the Ubuntu install all seemed to go ok but I'm having a major problem with the display not following what I'm doing and not updating as windows are opened and closed. Am I likely to be doing something silly or have I got a hardware conflict somewhere. Where should I start?

Feb 28, 2011I just installed Ubuntu last night parallel to windows vista ultimate (no problems). My biggest problem is that when I tried to install the nvidia display drivers, I somehow downloaded a server based driver (and am having amazingly difficult problems). I use a dual monitor set up (both are plug and play LCD displays) and i'm not too worried about aesthetics but rather, performance. I downloaded the correct driver but now I don't know how to install it. Is there a way to uninstall this server driver?

The only way I can get this to work is after logging on, removing the applet from the panel & the adding it back again. Not really a satisfactory "fix".

May 24, 2011It takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.
However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?

Dec 4, 2010I'm using Emerald Theme Manager 0.7.2. Using Oxygen 0.1 as the engine, when I switch between Firefox tabs the Title Bar lags at times and displays the previously viewed tab/screen. If I click in the Title Bar, it then updates.

Jan 22, 2011I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 32bit installed on my flash drive so wherever I go I can have my own mini personal computer, but one problem I'm having is every computer it is run on the next time it's rebooted to the OS on the hard drive it has UTC time instead of the actual time for the timezone you're in that Windows uses. So is their a way I can make Ubuntu not automatically change the clock to what it wants?

I can't figure out for the life of me why the time keeps changing. How can I set it to update it's time every day or two? I don't want to hit ntp.org every day, as is recommended. What's the recommended interval for connecting to the ntp pool? The kernel is Linux 2.6.9-67.0.4 (from uname -a)

Mar 18, 2010I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything.However nothing on the TV itself.How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

May 17, 2010using the System->Preferences->Remote Desktop i have setup a fresh ubuntu install to share its screen.
from my OSX 10.6 machine, i have tried connecting via Chicken of the VNC and Jolly's Fast VNC Client, both will successfully connect and show the full screen on access, but fail to update the screen after this.
the only way to update it is to disconnect my VNC session and reconnect again.
the Ubuntu desktop is being VERY responsive to mouse gestures over VNC, so this seems to be a one way issue.
Ubuntu :: Remote Desktop Not Updating - How To Update It
Jun 1, 2010I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 and enabled Remote Desktop access on the machine. Using vncviewer from my XP box, I can log in just fine, but I'm not getting the screen refreshed in vncviewer. The Ubuntu box is getting all the mouse movements and clicks (I can see the ubuntu box from the XP box - I can see the mouse cursor moving around and I can see the menus being selected, etc.) Those events are just not showing up in the vcnviewer, though. TightVNCviewer version 1.3.10.
FWIW, prior to installing 10.04 I had 7.10 on that box and everything worked as it should. No changes on the XP box. I doubt it's relevant, but I had a power supply failure on the Ubuntu box, replaced that as well as the mother board - some of the capacitors looked like they were ready to go. I believe the new motherboard has a different nvidea-based on-board video chip. Since I had to replace the PS and mobo, I figured I might as well install 10.04 while I was at it.

Secondly, it defaults with 4 desktops in a 2X2 grid layout. I changed it to 2, then back to 4 and now it has 4 desktops in a linear layout (1x4). How can I change it back to 2X2?

Jul 13, 2010I have installed Fedora 13 sucessfully and rebooted my computer for its first run of Fedora. When it comes time to load the desktop I only get the desktop and nothing else. I noticed that my mouse can run off the side of the screen on the left or right. I've tried rebooting and the only thing that changes is which side the mouse runs off.

Most of the things have been fine so far, I just plugged it into a proxyless internet connection and adjusted my location for time zone (I've been using a porxy server previously for internet which didn't allow changes in location and time zone work) and since then that calendar has moved out of the scope on the top right corner of my screen and I'm unable to move it.

Apr 11, 2009I have the bar at the top configured to display the time but it is displaying 12 hours out.For example, it's now 16:49 but the time is displaying as 06:49. If I click on Adjust Date & Time it has the correct time in there and it is configured to display 24-hour format and is in the correct time zone. If I switch to 12-hour format it displays 6:49 AM which is clearly incorrect.I can't fix it because it thinks the time is correct when I try to change it.

Feb 12, 2010I have just updated to karmic. For some odd reason, the time/date indicator on the top panel now spreads the data over two lines, rather than placing them side by side. There doesn't seem to be any option in the preferences program to control this.
This means that the panel cannot be reduced below a two line minimum. Not only have I lost desktop space, but the panel icons have expanded to suit the new thicker panel.
