Server :: Updating Time - Recommended Interval For Connecting To The Ntp Pool?
Apr 22, 2011
I am managing a PBX which runs redhat enterprise linux. The time on it is always getting out of sync, which causes the time on the phones to display incorrectly. I can't figure out for the life of me why the time keeps changing. How can I set it to update it's time every day or two? I don't want to hit ntp.org every day, as is recommended. What's the recommended interval for connecting to the ntp pool? The kernel is Linux 2.6.9-67.0.4 (from uname -a)
I want to find the cumulative CPU time used by each process between two points (defined by the user, e.g. running a command or clicking a button).
A first stab at this would be running
Code: ps -eo pid,cputime
at the beginning of the interval and at the end, then doing some arithmetic on the two sets of results. But this only shows whole seconds of cputime ... and what about processes that started and stopped during the interval?
How to refresh a page automatically?Say for example i need to refresh page in ubuntuforums to get new questions.I feel lazy to refresh the page often. Is it possible to refresh the page automatically in a specific time interval?I have tried ReloadEvery Firefox Add-on.But it refresh all the tabs. What i want is i want to refresh a page in a particular TAB.
not sure if this goes here, but is there a way to get the mouse to continuously click automatically after a set time interval? (eg, 2 seconds) i've googled and found plenty of auto-clicking software for windows, but no luck for linux.
How can I change the time interval of the rtorrent for contacting the tracker server? I talk for the procedure which asks from the tracker new peers. currently in my rtorrent it is 3000 seconds which is not the best option when it comes to private trackers.
I am writing a C program which reads data over serial port. While reading data, if I send my data(which is a 13 byte structure) periodic with a period of 1 second for 10 times I read it without problem and I read the data 10 times as I sent and as I expectBut if I send data continuousuly(without any time interval between each sending) 10 times I can only read 1 of them(I can only read it once).
I have installed Fedora10 on my PC which had an XP. Now Fedora waits just 2-3 seconds to press any key to choose between XP and Fedora. Actually if I don't press any key it automatically begins Fedora. How can I increase this time interval?
how to configure samba share that users from ip pool (for example 192.168.1.200-210) have accest without login and rest users form ip pool (192.168.1.2-199 and 192.168.1.211-254) have to past autorization.
After a recent installation and update I am having problems connecting to the internet even after following the steps in [URL]... Configure a network card in Suse/openSUSE...." It doesn't always connect when I boot and there is no connection icon on the panel nor the KDE desktop. Can someone assist me with this problem?
I'm using kubuntu karmic on my computer. I hv a prob. frm some days that when I run "sudo apt-get update" or "sudo aptitude update", then it downloads same packages every time of 10.5 mb. I also recreated my sources.list file but it has same prob. again..
We're about to upgrade our Ubuntu server and are looking for a complete package set that includes a firewall, some kind of snoopy, and whatever else we "must have" or that would just be extremely useful. What do you guys find the most absolutely necessary and needed packages for running a linux server in regards to security and performance.
I think this is the right place to ask my question so I'll just go ahead. Where I live we have frequent power anomalies such as outage and why I would describe as power resets resulting in power being cut and restored in a very fast delay, resulting in all electrical equipment in my house to reset and all computers to improperly shutdown and reboot. I don't know how many times my beloved Linux server was reset like this and every time reiser fs has to replay transactions and so far I've been lucky I did not lose any hdd or other components but I think this will happen sooner than later.
What I am searching for is a device that would protect my server, scanner, router and a few other small devices from power surges and anomalies that would result in hardware and equipment damage. What I also want from that device is the capability to continue powering the devices until they properly shutdown. I think a ups is what I am looking for but all models that I've seen are priced $400 up and that's over my budget.
What I also want is the capability to announce to the server that the device is running on batteries and that the server can initiate it's normal shutdown procedure.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04.2 and I've got a problem with the Clock 2.30.2 applet not updating the time.
The only way I can get this to work is after logging on, removing the applet from the panel & the adding it back again. Not really a satisfactory "fix".
I'm using Emerald Theme Manager 0.7.2. Using Oxygen 0.1 as the engine, when I switch between Firefox tabs the Title Bar lags at times and displays the previously viewed tab/screen. If I click in the Title Bar, it then updates.
I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 32bit installed on my flash drive so wherever I go I can have my own mini personal computer, but one problem I'm having is every computer it is run on the next time it's rebooted to the OS on the hard drive it has UTC time instead of the actual time for the timezone you're in that Windows uses. So is their a way I can make Ubuntu not automatically change the clock to what it wants?
I have 2 network cards in my computer, and I would like to connect them to 2 different networks. Both connections work fine when I use them so that the other one is unplugged, but as soon as I connect the second plug (doesn't matter which one is first) they both stop working.I've been googling and reading dozens of pages about how to set this up, but I still can't figure it out.
One connection gets its addresses from DHCP and that connection is used for pretty much everything. The other connection has a static IP, and is used to access just one other computer, which is in the same subnet as that static IP.I'm using Ubuntu and I've been using the NetworkManager Applet to manage my connections. If I've understood my googling correctly, NetworkManager Applet can't be used alone for this kind of setup, is that correct? (Even though it has that "Routes..." button and "Use this connection only for resources on its network" which I've tried for the connection with the static IP, but they don't seem to help.)
So my questions are:
1. So I really can't use NetworkManager Applet for this?
2. What software / tools should I use instead? (My googling brought up such wildly different solutions, and I don't know which ones are outdated, if any.)
3. Should I get rid of NetworkManager Applet completely?
I'm familiar with routing in theory, totally clueless about the networking tools in Linux, but happy to read manuals and happy to learn to use the command line versions if anyone can point me to the right direction.
I would like to my laptop to connect to two networks at the same time. The first network is wireless through which I access the Internet. The other network is a wired router to which my laptop and another computer are connected. would like to connect to the two networks at the same time so I can access the Internet, and talk to the other computer on the wired lan.My problem right now that I can only connect to one network at a time. Even the act of plugging in the cable for the wired network causes the wireless to cease functioning.Could somebody give specific steps. I am on Ubuntu 11.04.
I have a Skytex SX-E700 netbook with a Linux system and I cannot connect to my Time Warner home wireless system. It will connect but the IP address is invalid. Time Warner has no idea how to fix it. Has anyone had this problem and figured out how to fix it? By the way -- I can't find any system info on this little netbook and can't seen to get into anything that tells me what it contains.
I noticed that it takes a couple more seconds before Ubuntu connects to my wireless network when it wakes up from sleep. I didn't have this annoyance when I was using 10.04, and only appeared when I upgraded to 10.10. It takes about 5-7 seconds before it indicates that it's connecting. When I was using 10.04, it only took a maximum of 2 seconds for it to indicate that it's in the process of connecting to my network.
as after connecting thru vnc (any tightvnc or real vnc),after some time of the connecting the Linux server RHEL 5.3,screen goes black screen with X mouse movement, getting after some time login all the things are visible even we can open the terminal & any application thru taskbar option, but after some time the screen goes black with big X. eventhough I tried to disable the screen saver option then also is happening.
I have several file servers in our offices and I am relatively new to Ubuntu / Linux. I get notices that there are updates for the server software from time to time. Is it typical to update everything when available or should I follow "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..." mentality?I would hate for everything to be working fine and then have an update throw me a curve.
I am hosting two Virtual Servers both running Centos 5.3 on a host machine also running the same OS. The VM software in use is Xen, as supplied with the OS.The host machine's time and date is fine, however both Virtual Servers are running ahead of real time consitantly.Running /etc/init.d/ntpd restart will resolve the issue however one of these is running MailScanner and when the time suddenly goes backwards, sometimes by as much as an hour, it stops working properly.
I am looking for a script that will, as the title says, run any commandsive it at intervals i set, also at startup.Any help to point me in the directionof a helpful resource or some basics I can add to with direction My searches have proved fruitless so far, and I have no chance of working it out on my own
I have a set of machines on a disconnected network. Periodically, one of the machines connects to the internet and synchronizes its time with a time server that is not known until the connection is established. (The machine queries a central command server for the address of the time server it should synchronize to.)
I then use a custom tool to do some calculations to call adjtimex() and adjust the clock so that it runs fairly accurately.
I know ntpd is supposed to be able to handle disconnected networks but I thought you had to preconfigure the servers in the configuration file.
My intent is to run ntpd on this machine (without configured "server"s) so that it can serve time to the internal network. (Periodic synchronization using ntpdate from the internal machine to the bridge machine.)
The problem: ntpd wants to fuss with the values I set using adjtimex(). I want it to quit thinking it needs to adjust the clock and just serve time to the internal network. (Maybe I have a GPS time source hooked directly to the machine!)
I recently removed windows 7 from my computer and am now only using ubuntu. I used a live cd to grow the partition to use the new available space, but now the system just hangs at the Verifying DMI pool data section of bios. This is usually the first thing before grub loads.
I was a windows XP user and one fine day my windows crashed and blue screen of death appeared. I have downloaded Ubuntu and created an ISO image on my pendrive with the help of the another computer as per the steps mentioned on the linux website. Now when am tryin to boot my corrupt PC with pendrive i cannot move beyond the comment " verifying DMI pool data" nothing happens later.
