Ubuntu :: Way To Shorten Display-time Or Move Notification Dialog Box?
Feb 18, 2011
Notifications that popup in Ubuntu (e.g., for downloading items in firefox or Network configuration stuff) display a rectangular black box in the upper right corner of my Desktop. It often covers up items I need to access like logout items or links to my Account etc in a webpage I'm in. I often find myself having to wait for the Ubuntu dialog box to disappear before I can access whatever it is covering up.Is there a way to make these dialog boxes appear in the LOWER right corner instead? Also is there a way to shorten the amount of time that these notifications display before disappearing?
Is there a program there that can display screen cast commentary as text in a transparent window centered on screen ( in a window that looks like a GNOME-Do window or Growl notification window).
Feature am looking for is almost like the alossage mode in emacs. But instead of showing what is being typed, each press of a shortcut key displays in a notification dialog in the lower 3rd of the screen one line at a time from a predefined text file.
So now - I can define a text description for each step in the screen cast in say ~/castScript.txt During screen-capture press the shortcut key to display each line of the text from the file onscreen
I need to move the 'notifications' that are displayed to the bottom right corner and also reduce its display timeCan't find where they are controlled from and they are pretty annoying (most of the time)
I installed xubuntu8.04 on my laptop(no other system),but when i started the system, there came out a grub and showed "press ESC to enter the menu"
I think this is a waste of time since i have only xubuntu on my lap, why do not just get in directly? why need a grub?i do not need so can i do something to shorten the start time? ( i know the menu is revovery option) by the way i can not mount my usb hard disk, the error shows:
I've been using mail-notification from the repos for ages to monitor my gmail account with no problems. Since I upgraded to Karmic, it's been popping up an irritating dialog window whenever a new mail arrives (as well as the standard notification). how to turn it off without losing all notifications?
Since I updated to 9.10 I've had 2 problems with display.(1) The notification bubble is blacked out.System notifications,IM notifications, network notifications...none are visible. (2) Some dialog boxes (not just OO) have unreadable text. It happens for OO every time. (I am running an older IBM Thinkpad with a 1.8 MHz CPU and 1GHz of ram.)
I have installed Virtualbox from their website. I was able to create an XP virtualbox. I have tried several times, though, to download the XP disc to the virtualbox and I keep getting an error message that says it needs 32 bits. I found the display properties box and changed it from 16 to 32, also restarted the computer.I am still getting a wrong machine message with this error message about 16 bit. What am I missing?

The icons in the notification area became out of order when I switched displays (laptop / external display). I was able to rearrange all of them by right-click > Unlock from panel > Move except for the wireless icon which doesn't have a "Lock to panel" option when I right click it. Is there a way to move it back to the left of the date?
When I first installed Maverick on my Dell Laptop, I had a slick-looking notification display when I changed the volume via the media buttons. However, I made some changes to get the media buttons to control the PCM volume channel, and it now seems I'm stuck with this ugly notification that I cannot figure out how to get rid of:I'm not entirely sure this is what borked my original volume notification, but it was around this time I noticed the change.
It's a dummy question, but does anyone know of some "time notification" setting or program for opensuse? I wish I could be notified every whole hour. And is there anyway to hide the clock without removing it from (gnome) panel?
I'm looking for a program that will digitally display the time in three different cities - all showing at once. I don't care if it is a panel applet or stand-alone. I'm using Suse 11.3 and Gnome.
When a notification comes in on KDE, if I am scrolling a window in FF at the same time, the FF page goes smeared and unusable, and stays that way. Is this a known bug or something I can tweak? I will post a screen soon... (I have to wait for a notification!)
where the time to display media notifications is stored? When I put a CD or DVD into the player slot, a popup window shows possible actions to take but these old eyes can't read it fast enough to get through the list. Is it possible to get it to display longer and if so how?
When I put an audio CD in the slot, the display says there are six (6) actions possible but I only have time enough to read the first 2 or 3.
Because I only use chat (Empathy) and not evolution (I use gmail, I know you can put it into the mail applet but I have a Android (smartphone) and it notifies me there)
So my question would be how do I "move" the Chat button onto the notification bar and out of the mail applet?
I might get harassed for making this windows/linux comparison, but i'm seriously wondering why i cant find any application that can display a quick little notification on the bottom right hand corner of my screen whenever there's some intrusion attempt.
For example, sometimes I can see that in my /etc/logs/secure (or something like that) there's someone who's trying to attempt to connect to me using random usernames/passwords from different servers. The only time I know this has happened is when i actually open the file with gedit. Is there anything like (norton for windows) that can display little notifications (with or without eye candy)??
Since upgrading to Lucid, I am getting the following dialog warning on login: 'Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors X Server does not support size requested' Im using the current proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver with dual heads. My display is fine, but the warning every time I login is annoying. After googling around I found this thread: [URL]. I tried going to Monitor Preferences as suggested. My resolution as displayed in the default tool is set to 3840 x 1200, which I suspect is the issue forcing the dialog, but I cant change the resolution, refresh rate or rotation from the Monitor Preference dialog box. dino99's response (in the referenced post) about xorg.conf not being needed anymore seems relevant. How can I resolve this issue and get rid of this annoying warning? Is there a configuration that I can update with a supported resolution to placate lucid?
I have four computers hooked up via a KVM. On all of them except the computer in question the video is displayed properly. They all are Nvidia cards. I ran SaX2 but it doesn't have any way of tweaking the video over that I can see. I haven't installed the nvidia package yet but it doesn't have it either. Hitting the auto adjustment on the monitor every time I select this machine on the KVM isn't the answer. How do I get to the old video adjustment screen?
I have several program windows open on my main display (showing on my physical screen).I've created a second display for VNC connections (using vncserver :14).Is there a way I can move all open windows from the default display to the VNC display?
I have to copy and move files over two systems all the time. So when I am on system 1, I simply use the command
Code: $scp * system2:/some_directory
There are many files in PWD of system1 with different extensions. Of all the files in the PWD on system1, I don't need a file called *residual.dat as it it particularly big and wastes a lot of time copying. How can I make a shortcut so that every time I do scp, it copies everything but the *residual.dat file?
I am trying to clean my computer. Basically I try to order some movies to put all of them in directories. I started by hand but I am loosing time I guess. I want to do something like:
mv *.avi /nonexisting_directory/
nonexisting_directory being the name of the file without .avi, changing for each file. How can I write in command lineor in script?
my computer have windows 7 and also a ubuntu in it (i started with version 10.04). i've just updated my ubuntu and i found that the list in the grub menu got longer by 2.and i feel its a long list....
so how do i shorten the list... i'll be ok if i just have the latest Linux and its recovery mode. than memtest86 and the other and last Windows 7... i dont need the old ubuntu in the list.... its redundant.... i have startup-manager installed but does not do what i wanted...
I have configured heartbeat and pacemaker with 2 nodes, all resources work well, all resources stars when some of them is down, when the host is down, pacemaker moves all resources to the other one, my configuration:
[code]...
i have the directive " resource-stickiness="INFINITY", when node1 is down, the node2 starts all resources and prevent failback again though the node1 is up, back i need move all resources to the first one when I certainly sure the node1 is runnig, is there some directive to tell pacemaker that move back again the to node1 automatically? i mean, is posibble to move back resources to node1 when It has passed certain time, maybe 1 hour or something?
When working on a rails app I like to open all of my files through the command line like so CD my_app gedit app/views/user/show.HTML.erb Is there a way that I could shorten this so that I could just write something like gedit user_views/show.HTML.erb
I would like the console to stay in the main directory, I just don't like having to type out app/controller/user_controler.rb every time I want to open the user controller. I know that I could just open the file with my mouse, but I feel like moving from keyboard to mouse breaks my focus a little bit. When I can just tap away at the keyboard it seems like I have a more smooth workflow.
so this is my favourite audio format (please kindly refrain from dissuading me to use it , it is not my question) and it worked fine up to karmic but i spent time today it seems okbut then when i run
I'm trying to find a proper command to move a certain set of files according to date/time range. I am thinking that the command should be something like:
If i am using a terminal window (shell) and I am on a deep point of a folder tree it becomes difficult to read what i write, as well as the entire content of the window. Is there a way to shorten the name of the current path in a shell / terminal?I know that aliases can be used for commands, does it exist anything similar for paths?
i have a bunch of shorten files i want to play from the command line and ffplay will play them one at a time but i want to play them one after the other (the whole album)does not work i must have forgotten something as it plays one track then stops.
