Ubuntu :: Desktop In Panel - Leaves The Background Clear
Sep 13, 2010
Is there anyway to have like a desktop icon in the panel, that like shows all the items on the desktop but leaves the background clear, similar to how it is on windows? I keep creating new folders and i hate it when my desktop gets full.

I'm using cron to run a tunnel. It is a looped script which never exits, and thats why I don't want cron to wait for it. This is a crontab entry:@reboot $HOME/cron/portfw.sh &When I run it manually, everything is ok. But when cron runs it, a defunct sh process keeps running until portfw.sh and it's child are killed. Somehow cron knows that processes spawned in background and keeps waiting for them and ignoring the fact that parent process exited. I tried using setsid to change spawned process group, but it did not full cron, it still knows about child processes

I added the unity ppa and installed unity to check it out thinking I could just switch back with
Code:
dpkg-reconfigure gdm
Unity left me with just the purple familiar backdrop and a large black X as the mouse cursor. In running the above statement I'm left with the background and cursor only. how to get unity working and/or how to get back to gnome?

on my lenovo 3000 laptop, geforce 9300m gs 64bit driver from nvidia is installed and everthing works fine except this:
when i open a flash player on any browser, say i watch a video on videos in firefox and when i close the ff, the window where the flash player was, is left as a distorted image residue on the desktop.
printscreen could not copy that image to clipboard so i've photographed it here: [url]
that problem happens only when i visit flash player pages. what to do to get rid of it?

Alright, this has been driving me bonkers for months now and I can't find the answer anywhere. I like the custom theme options with standard gnome just fine, plenty of adjustments that can be made, with only one adjustment missing which would create perfection (at least in my opinion).
How on earth is it possible to change the backgrounds of the "mini-panels" which are always grey by default? No matter which Theme I choose and customize, I can never get the background color of the time/date applet, monitors, evolution, garbage can, and so on to change. I'd like to make all of the backgrounds transparent, not just the main panels that contain the other stuff. Is this even possible, and if so, how?I'm assuming since all of those apps have the same default color that an adjustment "wherever" would then change those default colors on all of the applets (hopefully).

Say I set a background color or custom image to a panel. The notification icons (sound, net activity, clock, etc) and a few other icons (trash, desktop) appear to retain the default background. Looks kind of funky. Any way I can make these icons conform to my custom background?

having just begun using 11.04 I think this panel background, with its smooth gradient, gives the default theme a lift, especially on displays that aren't very flattering to the original background like my laptop's. This panel.bg file, dumped in my Ubuntu One storage and linked here, goes in usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/apps/img (press alt F2, type gksu nautilus and enter your password and then navigate there) and you might want to c&p somewhere the one that's there first in case you disagree with me... You need to reboot or login to see the change of course. It was made from cropping a screenshot of the Ambiance window border and then turning it upside down. [URL]

After installing gnome-color-chooser for Ubuntu 10.10, I followed all the steps to enable transparent gnome menu. When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.

I know how to change the colors of the panels. But on the parts were the ubuntu symbol, the menus (Applications, Places, and Systems), the date and time, and the indicator applets is, they do not change at all. And pretty much the same problem on the bottom panel.
I tried Gnome color changer but only works for the texts and the drop down menus. I use Gnome classic (hated Unity). My goal is to make ALL of the panel background black.

So I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

I've installed Fedora 13 from DVD and selected some extra features (php, mySQL). After the installation and user creation, I rebooted and logged in - clean clean desktop. No menu, no panel nothing. But I can run some commands (like firefox) from ALT+F2. It looks as if the commands works fine, but no menu.
I've re-installed my whole system.... same thing after logging in. I can see the bottom panel before log in.
Whatever I should do, I can only through command line as I'm able (from ALT+F2) to open a terminal. I suspect my resolution or something.
I'm working from a Acer laptop who's monitor is broken, connected a Samsung SyncMaster 943nwx to it. Its a 17" wide monitor.

How do I get it to display a different desktop background for each desktop? I'm sure I saw this option somewhere, but I can't find it again.
Secondly, it defaults with 4 desktops in a 2X2 grid layout. I changed it to 2, then back to 4 and now it has 4 desktops in a linear layout (1x4). How can I change it back to 2X2?

AAO D255, all updates, Ununtu 11.04My desktop background and folder icons are dim in comparison to the slider and any program I open. I also notice that when I run a program that installs anything that screen dims (gets like this grey opacity I guess) after a period of time. I am plugged into the wall so the laptop is NOT running on battery. Is there some setting I need to tweak after this latest install? This did NOT occur prior to samesaid.

After changing it, I restarted my computer, typed in my username/password and it just brought me to an image of my background with no icons or the sidebar. When I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 it brings me to a command prompt. Also, after the log in I get an error displaying Enter password to unlock your login keyring. After entering my password nothing happens.
