Ubuntu :: Dem Bongos At Startup

Mar 30, 2011

I have sounds turned off with Maverick Meerkat via System -> Preferences -> Sound.I recently discovered upon reviewing System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications there was a little program for a startup sound. I removed it.Yet when I continue to restart Ubuntu, the sound keeps playing. How else can I address this so my computer's silent unless I decide to play something?

Ubuntu :: Alsamixer Startup "speaker" Level (and Screen Brightness Startup Level)

May 23, 2010

I just upgraded to the 10.04 and everything works just fine as before (except for skype but that really doesn't matters as it has already been 3 years I'm using ubuntu and I managed to get it to work only once, for miracle I believe ^^). The only real issue I have is this: when I start up my laptop, after the log-in, no sound will be heared as the "speaker" volume level in alsamixer is set to 0; if I raise it from the terminal running alsamixer (as I don't know any other alternative) everything plays just fine, but the next time I boot I do have to do it all over again... So, how can I change the default startup level of the "speaker" in alsamixer?

PS: by the way I do have the very same issue with the screen luminosity but the other way round as is always starts at maximum brightness and I can't manage to get it to start at the minimum, as it did before. At least reducing the backlight if far more quick but a couple of times I forget it and the battery lasted something like half an hour

Ubuntu :: Can't Load Any OS At Startup

Jan 22, 2010

When I turn on the computer, the Grub2 shows up and asks me to choose what OS to start. And from today on, whatever I choose, I end up with nothing. When Linux (Ubuntu) is chosen, then the blinking logo is shown (depicting it's loading) and after some time I can only see a black screen. In case when Windows is chosen, the black screen appears immediately. Kive cd works fine but don't know what I could do with it. A week ago I changed a booting order in my BIOS, so that GRUB2 is loading very fast now. Then I also chose: sudo dkpg-reconfigure grub-pc and selected the disk that had my boot partition. For a week or so it worked fine.

I've added mpd to System->Preferences->Startup Applications several times and it always just disappears and of course isn't started. I have used both mpd and /usr/bin/mpd as the command. I have done a log search as follows:

Code:
sudo find /var/log -type f -mtime -5 -exec grep -i -e 'mpd' '{}' +

and nothing significant was found, e.g. an error message indicating that the mpd startup command was removed.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Freezing On Startup?

Aug 24, 2010

I am getting frustrated and at my wits end. I went away from home for 3 days and came back to a frozen computer. To start, my linux computer was locked and wouldn't allow me to switch to my other computer using my KVM. All I saw was the default wallpaper with no icons, cursor or anything. Rebooting the computer allowed me to resume normal operation on the other but not on my linux comp. Now when I boot I can only get to a recovery console if luck is on my side and trying a normal boot freezes the computer with a blank screen and blinking cursor.

I tried editing the GRUB commands with "nomodeset", "i915.modeset=0" and "i915.modeset=1" with no luck. I also tried removing "quiet" and "splash" from the boot and it freezes at random parts of the boot. Sometimes with an error loading a device with IRQ 21 and sometimes on a memory address. I am running XP on the same computer, so I thought I would try to boot into that, even THAT freezes!I have even tried running my LiveCD and it tells me there is an error reading the boot CD...the same CD I installed with 3 weeks ago without any problem! As I type this, the computer is booting, sort of, to a black screen with a ridiculously large "X" cursor and a small white dot in the upper left.System Specs:Athlon 32004gb RAMGeForce 7200generic DVDgeneric sound

Ubuntu :: NTP Update On Startup

Sep 15, 2010

I'm running a Ubuntu 10.04 server in a secured zone on my network that has no access to the outside world. In that same zone, there is an NTP server which I setup my Ubuntu server to access in order to sync its time on a daily basis. Everytime I reboot my Ubuntu server, the clock goes back 4 hours, I guess since it cannot access the default Ubuntu NTP server. Is there a way to disable this from the startup and if so where do I do it, or can I set it to sync on startup with my NTP server?

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Will No Longer Startup

Oct 24, 2010

I have been dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu for a few years now, and yesterday I successfully updated my Ubuntu partition to release 10.10.

Today my daughter visited and used my computer. She always boots into Ubuntu rather than Windows, and today I suspect that she may have turned off my computer before Ubuntu had completed shutting down.

After my daughter left for the day, I started up my computer, selected Ubuntu from my Grub2 menu, and got dumped to a command-line interface with the following lines at the end:

mount: mounting /dev on root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on root/proc failed: No such file or directory

Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init

No init found. Try passing init= bootarg

I'm thinking that my Ubuntu partition has probably been corrupted and that I will need need to reinstall Ubuntu. If anyone has any ideas as to how I might be able to repair or revive the partition without having to re-install the operating system,

Ubuntu :: Getting Awn To Work On Startup?

Dec 28, 2010

recently upgraded to lucid lynx from karmic in which I used AWN with no problems. However, I now can't get it to work on start up, even though it is listed as one of the startup applications and the box for activate on start up is checked in the AWN manager. I have compiz installed and AWN works fine when I run it once the computer is turned on. It may be because compiz isn't properly listed as a startup application as I don't know the correct command, however other compiz actions work on start up!

Another minor point is that before I had the settings so that the dock was always hidden unless the cursor was over the area. I have played around with the preferences but can't find the right setting to make that happen! I've tried setting the behaviour as Intellihide which seems the most likely to me, but it just acts the same as window dodge... So maybe it's just not working properly?

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Getting Stuck On Startup (not Always)

Jan 22, 2011

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on my Acer TimelineX 4820 TG, and everything was messy. I updated the bios, and it got a lot of things done but I still have a couple of problems:

1) Almost every time I boot my notebook, it gets stuck on the splash screen (I am using the open source graphics drivers), and it will get stuck 3-4 times and require manual restarts until I can login properly. Also, the applet icons get mixed up or lost on the upper gnome bar.

2) When I install the proprietary ATI drivers, my screen is not recognised (at least I think so), and I am stuck with a terminal and no graphics at all.
