I have been dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu for a few years now, and yesterday I successfully updated my Ubuntu partition to release 10.10.
Today my daughter visited and used my computer. She always boots into Ubuntu rather than Windows, and today I suspect that she may have turned off my computer before Ubuntu had completed shutting down.
After my daughter left for the day, I started up my computer, selected Ubuntu from my Grub2 menu, and got dumped to a command-line interface with the following lines at the end:
mount: mounting /dev on root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on root/proc failed: No such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init
No init found. Try passing init= bootarg
I'm thinking that my Ubuntu partition has probably been corrupted and that I will need need to reinstall Ubuntu. If anyone has any ideas as to how I might be able to repair or revive the partition without having to re-install the operating system,
When i log in, i used to be able to be able to start doing things on my desktop straight away. Now when i log in, it takes about 8 seconds for the panel to appear etc. I looked at startup applications and the problem isnt in there i believe, as i have less running than what comes with a fresh install.
this computer (Yakumo model 331, 386 MB RAM) began running really slowly, crashing when multitasking, etc., but only in Ubuntu Karmic Koala. Kubuntu Karmic has no problem, nor does OpenSUSE. I finally figured out the problem when looking at system monitor: 0 bytes of swap! I have a 640 MB swap partition, which the other OS's are able to access, but Ubuntu no longer does unless I open a terminal and type in
Code: sudo swapon /dev/sda6
If I do this, everything works fine until next time I boot up. Is there any way to fix this?
I've used the startup-manager on my old laptop, also running ubuntu, to control the number of kernel options shown in the grub menu, as per this how-to:-[URL]see the last screenshot on the page. I've got a new laptop and am trying to do the same, but on the advanced tab I no longer have this "Limit the number of kernels in the boot menu" option, all I have is "Bootloader menu resolution" and [Create rescue floppy]. Is this because I am now running 64 bit or has this changed in 10.10 (I probably haven't looked at that on my old laptop since before 10.04)?
I've been running 10.04 (lucid, Kernel Linux 2.6.32-25-generic, GNOME 2.30.2) for about 3 or 4 months and everything has been great, until yesterday.
All of the sudden, bootup has started taking longer than usual and the panel at the top of the screen with "applications", "places", etc. doesn't appear until the machine has been running for at least 2 minutes.
Also- the mouse and keyboard (and my external hard drive), all of which are usb, do not respond until about 2 minutes after startup appears to have finished.
So, basically, here's what happens when I power the machine on:
1. Everything functions quickly, and as normal, until my desktop picture shows and the icons on it appear.
2. Whereas before I would have had mouse and keyboard use (and use of the top panel with applications, places, etc.) at this point, I don't have use of any of these.
3. So I just wait, without keyboard or mouse, etc. for about 2-3 min and all of the sudden the top panel emerges, the mouse and keyboards start working, and then the external hard drive appears.
4. As if this weren't annoying enough, after everything above starts to work, opening applications (e.g. firefox) takes a lot longer than it used to. Basically, starting any application after startup takes a long time the first time it's opened.
I don't understand why this is happening. Before this, startup was super fast, and everything was working great. I dont know how to check into recently loaded updates, but perhaps something got changed there that is causing the problem.
I haven't changed anything hardware related at all, so I don't imagine the change in performance is due to anything on that front, but I could be wrong.
I experience this since kde 4, but it never really was that bad because once in a while on updating kde I also deleted the .kde folder in my home-folder and everything was fast again.
But I haven't done this for a while now and kde take really long to load. Is there any folder to clean up there without deleting the whole .kde-folder and loosing all my settings again?
I just upgraded to the 10.04 and everything works just fine as before (except for skype but that really doesn't matters as it has already been 3 years I'm using ubuntu and I managed to get it to work only once, for miracle I believe ^^). The only real issue I have is this: when I start up my laptop, after the log-in, no sound will be heared as the "speaker" volume level in alsamixer is set to 0; if I raise it from the terminal running alsamixer (as I don't know any other alternative) everything plays just fine, but the next time I boot I do have to do it all over again... So, how can I change the default startup level of the "speaker" in alsamixer?
PS: by the way I do have the very same issue with the screen luminosity but the other way round as is always starts at maximum brightness and I can't manage to get it to start at the minimum, as it did before. At least reducing the backlight if far more quick but a couple of times I forget it and the battery lasted something like half an hour
The left hinge on my Dell Inspiron 1521 cracked and broke. Last night, I removed the hinge since it had frozen in an "up" position. I had to remove the hinge plate to do so. Since then, I am unable to boot my computer. Whenever I boot up, I see the Dell Boot Screen (like normal) and then the screen goes blank except for a the words GRUB at the top of the screen. I've tried using the Live Disk to recover, but I don't have a "Recover" option on the set up menu and prior to installing, the set up client advises that there is no operating system installed and that I have only one partition.
The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.I am using Debian in case you noticed by the screenshot but the solution should be the same as it would be if the OS was Ubuntu.
I'm using Audacious as my MP3 player, because I just can't take Rhythmbox any longer.I want to set Audacious as the default player for MP3s and Oggs, but I don't seem to be able to. When I open an audio file, it plays in MPlayer. There's an option in the GNOME context menu to open something with a certain programme, so I do that, and then you can choose the programme and tick a box to remember your choice. But the choice isn't remembered - audio still opens in MPlayer.
So then I went to the Default Programmes option in the GNOME Preferences Menu, expecting to find MPlayer as the default media player, but it's not, it's Rhythmbox, which never opens if you double-click on audio files. How do I sort this out and make it so I can set this from one place? It's a pretty big usability fail. How do I make a bug report about it?
I can no longer get into windows. it is listed in grub but i get hard disk error when it goes to load. any suggestions? don't want to have to re-install ubuntu or windows
I upgraded to 10.04 and everything went fine. I had a cd drive fail(wtf?) and took it out, now apparently everything is messed up as far as what is what (sda/b/c/d etc). I've got 2 hard drives, the OS drive was sdb2, with sdb3 /home and sdb1 an ntfs parition. sda1 is /media/disk. sdc0 was the cd drive.
On the next boot up, it was unhappy that something was wrong with the /home partition.(wtf is that, there is no /home "partition", it's /dev/sdb3!), so I was like.. ok just need to go into fstab and re-arrange things. I open up fstab and, most everything is commented out... so I guess 10.04 no longer uses fstab? What does it use now?
Here's my fstab:
Code:
I commented the last two so that the system would boot. Now it wants home on sda3 and media/disk on sdb1, which is fine, but when I change those in the commented section, obviously nothing happens. I would go through and make the file legible, if I knew that Ubuntu still even uses it.
i noticed after adding the flashplugin-x64 ppa from ubuntu tweak, when im in the synaptic package manager and go to install it, it appears to be installed but when i check the terminal log i see that it fails to download the plugin. I know that flash x64 has temporally been halted by macromedia i have tried using nspluginwrapper and the 32bit flash version but with certain videos im unable to use the controls.
I was wanting to know where i could get the latest x64 flashplugin ?? that was made before macromedia stopped creating them.
did some updates on the buntu-box but everytime I start it it now goes to some CMD-like screen that lets you go through F1-FX and comes up with diffrent tty thingies, before the update it used to go into the proper GUI, I have 10.10 installed, I think I updated my GPU driver and looked on here for some hints on what to do, I have tried: cd /etc/x11
Above command did not work for some reason, think it couldn#t find it? Sudo service gdm start Said above process is already started or something
My mum has a computer that has a dual boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.10. Well Ubuntu will not boot anymore, i just get a bunch of CLI output mentioning missing stuff. But she has really important data that she needs which is on the ubuntu partition. I have tried using Ubuntu & Knoppix live CD's the mount the partition and copy the data to her external HDD. On Ubuntu it couldn't mount, it just kept trying and trying forever. On Knoppix it just gave me a heap of CLI output that I have no clue what it means. How can I save all her data? Is there a program that can sav the data, or what is the best way?
I do reload to synaptic package manager and its show: Could not download all repository indexes. The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct. Code: Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found [code]....
I am guising at this point? It took for ever to boot up in 904 Jaunty. All though I never tried the above then and meant to. Thought the upgrade might get it . Now in Karmic Koala. I can get to the grub. Yet any fooling around here it always says unrecognized command. Well really I don't know what I am doing.I have a Intel graphic processor in this lap top I am sure. When it did boot up in 904 the display would mess up. I had upgraded all the way from 804 because I could never get my Alfa usb wifi to work. As for now it will not boot up? Is there any links on the subject? Not sure why this in red it was not on purpose
I am suddenly no longer able to run any Nautilus scripts. If I right click a file, select Scripts, then a specific script, nothing happens. No errors, no messages, etc. I have checked permissions, and everything appears to be OK. I am also no longer able to run anything via Alt+F2.Typing that keyboard combination does absolutely nothing.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a 250GB drive and have Windows 2K on a 40GB drive. I have noticed that the 40GB drive has got quite a few bad sectors appearing on it, so it looks like it's going to give up the ghost soon.I have decided to do away with the 40GB drive and Win 2K because I never use it, the question is if I just remove the drive what are the consequences if I do that? Apart from still seeing Windows 2000 in the bootup list. I've never tried this hence the reason for the question
I now have the server at the school up and running. Myself as well as one other teacher have no problem finding the server, connecting to it, and even transferring data to and from. I however have one other teacher that get an error when trying to connect. Says that the server name is no longer available.
I have been using some of the compiz effects now for just over a week with no problems. but yesterday they stopped working for what seems to be no reason. I have the recommended nVidia driver installed, here is my graphics card from lspci:
I right clicked on my desktop, and went to 'Change Destop background', then visual effects. This has been set to None. I cannot change this to Normal or extra, as I get an error saying
Code: Desktop effects could not be enabled
I have followed another thread which explained how to unistall and reinstall compiz, but it did nothing.
I have avast anti virus installed and it has been fine, but yesterday i downloaded updates for it and since then whenever i try to run the program i get an error and it refuses to run.
i've installed Ubuntu many times before. one thing i can never understand is the root user. i was never ever asked to set the password for the root user during installation. and for some reason, maybe i ****ed up during installation of stuff or whatever, i will no longer be able to login to root. it will say my password is incorrect.WHY CAN'T MY ACCOUNT BE THE HIGHEST ADMIN???very pissed off right now as this is the 2nd time i'm reinstalling my Ubuntu. (first time was because i might have ****ed the uninstallation of MySQL. now it's wrong root password BS)
All the installed languages are listed in the pull-down but, except for English. they are all grayed out. I can't switch to anything. I even tried uninstalling the English, leaving only Korean, and rebooted, but it still rebooted to English (and still listed Korean as the only language available). It said the system was incomplete and I needed to download some software, so I did, but that just resulted in English returning to the menu, which was selected and everything else still grayed out.
I have been running thunderbird.2.0.0.24+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 successfully for some time now under Hardy. This morning I tried to run it and I get the "wait" indication but then nothing. I looked in my home folder and the folder .mozilla-thunderbird seems to be liked to .thunderbird, but both are listed in red and black. (Doesn't sound good.) I saw a similar bug for a newer version of thunderbird, but the symptoms in my case seem different.
After some weeks of use and occasional unplugging-when-busy, my 500GB external USB hard drive no longer will automatically mount when I plug it in. The blue light lights up when I plug it in, but there is no automounting behavior. Also, when I type
Code: tom@zeppelin:~$ sudo mount -a nothing happens. The result of fdisk:
