I am running Ubuntu 9.10, and every time the computer starts, cups does not appear to be running. I have to run the following from the command line:

After cups is started, printing works fine. Does anyone know how I can get cups to start on it's own when the computer boots?
I can't get cups to auto-start at boot time. Running sudo cupsd manually works fine, but I don't want to have to do that every session.This seems to be affecting lots of folks. This thread claims that bug #444597 in launchpad has a solution, but I must be too stupid to see it, and the thread is closed so I can't post there.
All my rc and init files seem fine, bootsplash is off, and, of course, there are no useful boot error logs in Karmic.
However, many of those threads show that adding two lines to the file "/etc/network/interfaces" should solve the problem. I checked on my PC and those two lines are already there.. but CUPS still doesn't start properly on boot up...

cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!
cupsd: Child exited with status 1!
The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.
My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .
I have installed tomcat6 on Ubuntu. It starts it automatically at the startup. I do not want it to start automatically, I want to start it manually because I use same 8080 port for different servers. If tomcat is already started on 8080, it becomes problem.
How do I stop Ubuntu from not starting tomcat automatically at startup.

My Slackware64 13.1 system is running off a notebook that does not leave the desk often so I stay connected via a ethernet cable. Recently I set up the wireless configuration for my home network and while I would like to have it so that it automatically goes to the wireless interface when the wired is down, I do not think that is possible without wicd or some other network manager. Anyway, whenever I start up Slackware both the wired and wireless interfaces activate and acquire their own IP addresses. What I would like is for the wireless configuration to remain dormant so that all I would have to do is issue "ifconfig wlan0 up" to turn on the wireless interface/connection. Is this possible? As it stands I have to manually issue the "ifconfig wlan0 down" to turn it off once the system boots up and I log in.

I initially turned off cups (I'm pretty sure it was on by default) using this method, but now I have turned it back on again, it won't start at boot. I have to start it manually each session. I've probably missed something but here goes anyway,

I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use
startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits.When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx
I have never touched Linux. Always been intrigued, but never toyed around with it until now. So please bear with me. I normally run Windows 7 Pro but would like to dual boot Ubuntu. I have installed Ubuntu 11.4 with Wubi 4-5 times, and it starts out fine, and then stops working on me. I tried recreating it to see what was causing the problem, but with no avail. The problem it has is as soon as I pick Ubuntu from the GRUB it boots to some sort of bootup (non GUI) and gets to a point where it says something about a system audit, and never loads from there. The only way to fix it is to uninstall Ubuntu (through Add/Remove Programs) and reinstall.
I am not in a place where I can partition drives or anything like that. I do not care so much about using Wubi, but either that, or help booting from a USB would work fine for my needs.
i had ubuntu 9.04 on my netbook, and i tossed windows XP on an empty partition, and now i cant quite figure out what to add to the boot.ini to give me the option to boot from the the ubuntu partition.

I'm working from the set of Debian instructions following this post. I have saved the correct image file to my USB flash drive per the instructions for Intel x86. I've got a Celeron HP, 512 RAM, 1.3 Ghz processor, XP Home SP3. After saving file to USB flash drive, I extract file and a single boot file then appears next to zip folder. I tried extracting by command: # zcat boot.img.gz > /dev/sdX and that does not work; not recognized or something (I'm going from memory). Command line is C:/User/Docs and Settings or such, no option for G: drive in Command line, if that helps. I am no Command line pro. Got there by Accessories/ Command line. (Is this the same thing as Start/Run/msconfig, dnsflush etc?)So since I can't extract with Command line it follows that the "mount" instructions don't work for me either: mount /dev/sdX /mnt. So I just re-booted with USB drive in, and pressed Del and Esc alternately like a madman for about 5 boots, but does not open in BIOS; instead Windows opens normally.

I started in Failsave graphics each fresh boot. New Nvidia card arrived today and installed but I cannot loaded the drivers. System/Admin/Additional Drivers tells me I have the Recommended Driver installed but when I go System/Admin/Nvidia Server Settings I'm informed You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. I have a printer configured on my Ubuntu server using CUPS amd made it available to the local network. The printer is recognized on my other Ubuntu machine without any problems.
But on my Suse laptop, the printer is not recognized. Using the YaST printer Configuations, I choose the option "Recieve Printer Information from Remote CUPS servers. But no printer is found.But... when I choose Do All Yout Printing Directly via One Remote CUPS server and enter the correct IP address (192.168.1.100), the printer is found andI am sure the printer info is broadcasted because it shows up on my second Ubuntu PC. But why is it not recognized by default on my Suse machine

How to I add a root users to access the 127.0.0.1:631 interface for CUPS?

I'm in a bind and I don't know how to get what I want. Nmap shows ipp running cups on port 631. Great, simple enough I uninstall cups, along with its dependencies. A new portscan reveals that the port is closed SUCCESS, but... Ubuntu Update Manager nags me @ every restart about the "important security" updates. I can't lock the version of cups in Synaptic, because cups is not installed! So you see I'm in a bind. If I have cups installed I have an open port, and if I uninstall cups the update manager nags me. What do I do? I've tried:
- stopping the cups service and issuing the chkconfig cups off command... (doesn't close the port)
- uninstalling cups... (update manager nags)
- fuser -k 631/tcp (great, but @ reboot the port is still open)
Please teach me how to close this port / stop this service / tell update manager to shove cups.....

View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.04. Each time I boot or reboot,I have to manually force a DHCP request (dhclient). It always gets an IP without problems at that point, but not sure why it isn't grabbing one automatically. I also noticed right when I hit the desktop, it usually shows the Ethernet is disconnected, but then appears to connect each time without problems as well.It's not annoying enough to start ripping the guts out.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have created a Radius startup script in /etc/init.d for Debian which looks like this:
Now this works but when I boot my server it shows as ready to process requests and it doesnt login. I cant get a login prompt. If I do a CTRL C to try close this it doesnt work and just shows CTRL C on the screen, I can type in kill radius but nothing happens.
I guess its because my script is in debugging mode, most of the suggestions for a script said I should use:
However the radiusd a doesnt work and if I try to run using command radiusd in it comes up and says invalid command and I dont have the option to use
So if this script runs on my server, I could connect to the server through a putty session via port 22 and log on fine and do what I need too, but if I try to connect to the server directly after boot its just sitting on ready to process requests and I cannot do anything when directly at the server. On one particular server I didnt have the network confg right so I couldnt putty to it and now Im a bit stuck. Will I need to rebuild my server? As I canït break out of this ready to process requests and I cannot login as its just sitting there, I have tried connecting through serial management via my laptop but I cant do anything this way either the only way I could do anything was if I could get through to the server on putty.
There must be a way when directly at the server to cancel the radius and get logged in? As Ive mentioned CTRL C doesnt work. I can get to the ok prompt but not sure what command to use and if I could change the network config at the ok prompt or if I could somehow cancel the startup script at the ok prompt? I thought I could use the init commands to start the server without the script starting but the init commands don�t work and the server just sits there.
Also I guess I shouldnt be using radius X in my startup script, to prevent this problem is there something else I should be using? I tried using radius x (the small x) and I hit enter and then no process for radius starts .
I've been trying to figure this out for longer than I care to admit. We upgraded our print server (sysadmin) to 64 bit lucid and that moved our cups server from 1.3.7 to 1.4.3. We have a remote server that is still 1.3.7 (printhost1) but version difference doesn't seem to be relevant to the problem.
If I'm on console on sysadmin and do an lpr to a printer on printhost1, everything is copacetic. However, If I'm on a host that specifies "ServerName sysadmin" in its "/etc/cups/client.conf" access_log on sysadmin shows:

We've been using this method of sharing printers between locations for years and years so it not working now is a surprise.
cupsd.conf on sysadmin looks like this and is as open as I can imagine:

Additional symptoms are that only printers locally defined on sysadmin show up when the client uses System>Administration>Printing in gnome. Same thing when you browse printers in windows on our samba domain controller that backends on CUPS.
I just know that it's something simple that's going to make me facepalm but I'm at a loss.
I am facing a problem with my AT91SAM9260 customized board. Board is almost same as the evaluation kit.
I could download the binaries ( Bootstrap-v1.16, u-boot-1.3.4, linux kernel 2.6.20) successfully to the DATAFLASH/NANDFlash in my board by using atmel SAM-BA tool with usb/serialport/jlink.
Here I describe the problem.
When I power up the board, boot strap is not jumping to U-boot location, in the normal boot sequence and board stuck with bootstrap.
But when I disconnect/connect the JTAG USB cable ( provided with SAM-BA ICE) , it's jumping to u-boot location and booting the board properly. I'm getting the same error in NAND FLASH also.
I have tried one more test case.I copied bootstrap binary at the flash location, [location which is specified for u-boot binary] instead of U-boot.bin (location: 0x8400 in dataflash), I got continous bootstrap debug messages in my console. [ So can I conclude SDRAM doesn't have any problem? ]
Bootstrap code or U-boot code ?
I did a search here & on the web & can't find a "fix" that works. I tried the start order thing & the restart thing & one other I forgot, but nothing works.Funny the RESTART one didn't work as I CAN manually start it OK, unless I didn't put the command in the right spot.I DID notice that there are a few BUGS reported on this but they all go back far enough that I'd think they would be fixed by now.I don't have to manually start this thing every time I want to use it?

I used to have an old fashioned 1280x1024 flatscreen.Now the problem is, every single time when I log on Ubuntu resets my screen res. to 1280x1024. So every time I have to use the Nvidia Settings to set my screen res to 1920x1080 and every time I have to place my panel widgets back in the right place and order, because of that, which is quite annoying.GDM has no problems though, it always displays in the right resolution.I use a Nvidia GeForce 6200 graphics card and the nvidia-current driver on Ubuntu 10.04 i386. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have the Samba server & users configured, I can access between Linux/Windows shares and both SMB & NMB services are set to be enabled at boot.Everything working.But when I restart the computer, I notice in services configuration that "This service is dead." for NMB. Therefore I have to enable it manually upon boot so that it works.I'm using Fedora 10, fresh installed and updated. I've noticed through search that others have had this issue as well throughout other versions of Fedora, yet I have not found a conclusive solution to this.
