Ubuntu :: Creating A Document For Windows?
Apr 7, 2010
I need to print some documents I created in OO (.odt), but our printers are not Linux compatible, which means I somehow need to transfer the files to a Windows computer. I can't use the .odt files because MW can't open them (I can't install OpenOffice on the machines), and saving in either .doc or .docx does not work either because it totally messes up the document. So I tried print to file and created several pdfs, but again Adobe Reader on Windows can not open them. I am sort of running out of ideas, and the other thing is I am not really sure if the files I created are pdfs at all. When you open them in gedit they all start with
%!PS-Adobe-3.0 which to me looks more like a post script file.

I am trying to create:
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/95xinput document
where
/etc/X11/Xsession.d is a folder.
So I enter the above commands:
cd /etc/X11/Xsession.d
nano 95xinput
I type my text and when I try to save it it says that permission is denied.

I am having a problem with a LibreOffice when saving or saving as to a Windows Share.
Configuration:
Network
Small office server running Windows. Mounted using the Gigolo manager (used without issue in version 10.10).
All of our contracts and proposals are on the server. I can open a contract in LibreOffice from the server.
(All documents I am working with are native openoffice formats, these were not MS file conversions.)
I open a document titled A_Libreoffice_test.odt from the contracts directory on the windows server. No problems. I save as A_Libreoffice_test_2.odt to the contracts directory on the Windows server and get this error box:
If I select all contents within my document and paste it into a new LibreOffice Writer file then save the new file to the contracts directory on my Windows server, it saves without any problems. However, should I open that very same file that I just created and try to save it after a change or save as without any change, I will receive the error again.
Of course copy and pasting textual contracts is one thing but we also do all of our proposals in OpenOffice Draw (LibreOffice Draw) which behaves the same way. The select all, copy/paste into a new document workaround is less attractive in Draw.
We have 5 Ubuntu machines in our office working with files on this server. For now, employees and I are having to save our documents and transfer them to the server nightly.
I did a test by booting into the MacOS where I am also running LibreOffice and did not experience the same problem.
Here is what I have tried so far:
1) Removing all libreoffice applications and files then reinstalling but that also did not solve the problem.
2) Disabling the firewall on our Windows server temporarily to test the save as function (no change).
3) Remove libreoffice and try to install OpenOffice (not successful).
4) Poured some scotch and posted this question here on the Ubuntu forum... hopefully this works

I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 for awhile now, and I wish to create a partition for Windows 7 so that I can dual-boot. I know you all are cursing me right now, but I have no choice. I run too much high-end software for business purposes that I need to.
I have dual-booted before, but that was when I had windows xp on a primary partition, and I seem to recall that was necessary. I dual-booted ubuntu afterwards as a trial basis, and then I completely switched to Ubuntu 100% for the last couple years. Unfortunately I need to go back. Is it possible to create a file partition for windows as a secondary partition without wiping all my data?

I have network with Kubuntu server with 5 pcs all of them are using windows XP. The network is already designed for sharing files and folders. I have to create a new user and a share folder, also given permission to that user to access this folder. Now when I try to map it gives following error "The network folder specified is currently mapped using a different user name and password, first disconnect any existing mappings to this network share"

I have to give this computer (currently running Ubuntu 10.4) back a friend who wants Windows 7 on it. I need to create a bootable windows 7 pendrive...
I've tried several ways to do several this, including the suggestions found here and here, but keep getting stuck on the reboot where it tells me the drive is not bootable. In GParted, the USB drive IS marked as bootable.

My daughter tried to create a bootable USB-stick version of ubuntu by following the steps on this site, which included using the "universal USB installer" utility from pendrivelinux.com. She was on a windows notebook (I don't know which version, probably XP), and had saved the .iso to the desktop. She's generally pretty good about following directions, but now, with no CD or USB stick in place, the windows machine HD boots directly into the installer "Try ubuntu or Install ubuntu" screen, with no trace of windows! Naturally, her SO (it's his work machine) is more than a little upset.

I have a bit of a problem that I don't understand and would like some help please - I will try and explain the best way I can. I installed Ubuntu using the WUBI installer and so I can access my Windows partition in /host. Using Wine I can run World of Warcraft by going to /host/Program Files/World of Warcraft/WoW.exe But I would like to create a link on my desktop to that file so I do not have to keep going to that path everytime.
The Problem - when I click make link and drag it to my desktop I double click the file (expecting it to just act like a windows shorcut) but it doesn't - it creates some of the files that are in the world of warcraft folder on the desktop and then fails to open with message: Failed to open archive dataart etc...its like it is creating a copy of files on my desktop of what is already in the WoW folder.

Every time I boot up ubuntu I usually open 3 terminal windows and ssh into the same server. I would like to either click a shortcut, or run a single terminal command that will do the equivalent.
I came across the "gnome-terminal" command, but I was unable to get it to trigger an ssh command.
Ideally I would like to have a script that I pass in the number of windows I want to open and the server I would like to ssh into for each window.

I am running 10.10 on a Samsung n130. Occasionally my wifi adapter locks up, everything looks like it is connected but I cannot connect to the web. I have worked out that removing and re-installing the windows driver brings it back to life (a restart also works). What I was wondering is could it be possible to create a script that would carry out the removal and installation of the driver with one click of a button.

I am trying to create a bootable USB stick in Windows to install Debian on my laptop. I have looked at the guide on the [URL] website, but it seems to assume you already have access to a Linux machine with the use of zcat and other extractors. Is there anyway to create a bootable Debian USB stick in Windows? By the way, I'm trying to simply get the USB stick to become bootable and then install the OS through the internet on my laptop. My laptop does not have an optical drive, so I have to do it this way.

I am using OMAP-L138 chip which has ARM 9 core and runs linux. The device which I am making stores some data. I have to retirve that data using USB interface. For this, I have to make an application which communicates with the device drivers provided by the ARM linux(which comes with the OMAP L-138 *) so that we can transfer the data stored in the device to a computer.
My question: Suppose I make such an application which makes the host Linux computer detect my device connected at its USB port and then transfer the stored data to the computer. Will windows computers be able to detect my device? What should I do so that my device can transfer data to both Linux and Windows pc?

I have two hard drives in my desktop. One HD has a working Ubuntu system-hence the ability to post here- and the other contains Windows XP Pro. When the XP drive crashed I was able to re-install an image I had saved using Acronis. Unfortunately the dual-boot option at startup is no longer available. I can only boot to Ubuntu. Not so bad really but there are some programs on Windows that I need to use. Is there any way, using Grub perhaps, that I can reconfigure an MBR to include the second hard drive and the Windows system?

I've got a small issue that when a Windows user creates a new folder through Windows Explorer (from the menu or by right clicking) the new folder is only accessible to that particular user.Example:user SABKAR (member of the HR group) creates a new folder called MarcTestMenu in a shared Samba directory through Windows Explorer:# ls -l# drwxr-sr-x 2 sabkar hr 48 2010-04-01 10:36 MarcTestMenuAt this point user MORAMY cannot copy a file or open the directory MarcTestMenu. MORAMY gets a 'not accessible' error message in WindowsIf I su to the Samba box and issue this command:# chmod 6770 MarcTestMenu/I now get the follow permissions on the directory:# drwsrws--- 2 sabkar hr 48 2010-04-01 10:38 MarcTestMenuand user MORAMY can access and copy files to the directory.
