Ubuntu :: Creating A Link To World Of Warcraft On Windows Partition?
Apr 2, 2011
I have a bit of a problem that I don't understand and would like some help please - I will try and explain the best way I can. I installed Ubuntu using the WUBI installer and so I can access my Windows partition in /host. Using Wine I can run World of Warcraft by going to /host/Program Files/World of Warcraft/WoW.exe But I would like to create a link on my desktop to that file so I do not have to keep going to that path everytime.
The Problem - when I click make link and drag it to my desktop I double click the file (expecting it to just act like a windows shorcut) but it doesn't - it creates some of the files that are in the world of warcraft folder on the desktop and then fails to open with message: Failed to open archive dataart etc...its like it is creating a copy of files on my desktop of what is already in the WoW folder.

I'm running ubuntu 9.10 on my mac as a separate partition. I have World of Warcraft installed on the mac side. I want to use PlayOnLinux to run the game from the mac partition. Has anybody done this? If so, how would I go about making this work?

Question: How could you possibly install World of Warcraft CD disc onto Ubuntu 10.10, I've tried installing Dragon Age Origins onto Ubuntu 10.10 but says that the CD was not an executable bit?
I've done some research & went into the settings of the disc & tried to allow as an executable bit, but failed to succeed! Sucks but thats reality, so.. anyways if you have any solutions about this problem please don't hesitate to let me know

how to install Ubuntu. I have only ran it as a partition and am not sure the process i need to go through to install it on a newly built machine. My second question is that when i partitioned it ( was kinda giving it a test run to see if i could cope with the change from windows) I remember not being able to run world of warcraft. I couldn't get wine to run it. I want to run starcraft II and I'm not sure how thats going to go over. Is that going to give me a problem? I realize these should probably be separate threads but i figured these could be answered relatively easily.

I am fairly new to the Linux community however I have done my research on this issue and tried every fix I could think of (registry edits, wine config changes, config.wtf alterations).
All of these things got me where I am today. WoW will run in OpenGL mode for a couple seconds after loading my character and then wine crashes with this error from the Terminal code...

Just updated to Ubuntu 11.04 this morning, and was immediately overwhelmed. The new panel layout and sidebar thingy looks pretty sweet at first glance, but I can't find a durn thing. :s But to the point, went to run World of Warcraft after the update and the launcher starts, then after hitting play a fatal error pops up.
Code:
This application has encountered a critical error:
Fatal Exception!
Program: Z:home imGamesWorld of WarcraftWow.exe
ProcessID: 70
Exception: 0xC0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 0023:F751D270
The instruction at "0xF751D270" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read". And then of course the other Blizzard error nonsense. I know this isn't so much a Ubuntu thing, but has anyone else maneuvered around this or have any ideas for a fix?

My system is Ubuntu 9.10, WINE 1.0.1-0ubuntu8, ATI HD4350 with ATI proprietary driver, Intel Core 2 Quad, 3 GB RAM
I'm trying to figure out what is the problem. I used Ubuntu 8.10 in the past and never encounter a problem like this. It keep freezing the computer 3 to 5 times a day. I check varies of sys.log, kernel.log, any kind of log you could think of and they not showing any reason why it froze. This is the only last thing it wrote because it froze
Code:
Jan 29 12:57:58 sean-desktop wpa_supplicant[936]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
Jan 29 12:59:58 sean-desktop wpa_supplicant[936]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
Jan 29 13:01:58 sean-desktop wpa_supplicant[936]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
This is always what it ended up with every time it froze. I check the log and it usually on that message. and I switched back to the previous kernel and assumed it the newest kernel causing problem. I had this problem before in my Ubuntu 8.10, so i switched to the previous kernel and the problem is solved. So on my ubuntu 9.10, I switched to the previous kernel, it still have the same result. I'm running out of ideas. I been thinking about switching to 8.10. The reason why I like 9.10 because of ext4 support

I run openSUSE 11.2 (kernel 2.6.31.12) and I use Wine 1.1.38 to play World of Warcraft from the konsole terminal application. For the most part this works okay, but there is one small issue that continues to annoy me:
Look at your keyboard (assuming standard QWERTY no-name keyboard) - see the key just left of your Backspace key? That key is only partially working for me in WoW. I cannot bind it to any action bar button in-game, with or without addons enabled. For some reason the key works fine when entering text into the chat console though.
I have used xev to get a bit of data on the key itself - not that it is that informative to me though, but the absence of the issue when playing WoW through Windows would suggest that it is somehow endemic to my Linux configuration:
Code:
KeyPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x4a00001,
root 0x1a7, subw 0x0, time 6474080, (159,-10), root:(1364,15),
state 0x10, keycode 21 (keysym 0xfe51, dead_acute), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 2 bytes: (c2 b4) ""
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: True

I am running the latest Ubuntu on my HP Paviljon Slimline PC with AMD Phenom 9750 Quadcore Processor and 4GiB Ram (2.4Ghrz). code...
When i play Music or Video i have no problems at all.
But.
Have World of Warcraft installed trough Wine and all is working perfect. The thing is that i hear a weird chirping sound when i log in the game (1 time) and then i hear a sort of ticking sound on the background and it stays there no matter if a disable music or not.
Have also tried all 3 settings in sound config (ingame) eg. System Default, Pulse Audio Software ((Null)) and ALSA Software on Default ((null)).
The weird ticking sound is staying.
Anyone knows a solution of have a hint where i must look to solve this ?

I have a problem with WoW 3.3, when it starts I get a Black Screen, but I can hear the sound, and the windows responds to keypresses (like, pressing Esc exits the game, o when I press enter I hear the sound of logging in).I have a Lenovo G530, with Intel GMA X4500 as display processor. I think that the drivers are working fine, as I can run all the OpenGL games without problems. I have Ubu 9.10 and Wine 1.2. I've tried many solutions posted on this forums and WowWiki.When I run the game from a console with wine "/home/xxxx/Storage/Games/wow3/Wow.exe" -opengl -windowed, it outputs:

I am very new to the Linux/Ubuntu Platform (have used it now for 8 days), I am primarily a gamer when it comes to my computer. Because of this I have always been a windows user for compatibility reasons. A week ago my friend was telling me how awesome Ubuntu is and the background story behind it. Intrigued I tried it out and fell in love with it (good thing too because I accidentally killed my windows boot and all the files on that HD during installation). I am primarily a World of Warcraft gamer, and have gotten it to work through the great online community and guides out there using WINE. Now the problem is, I have only found two guides to try and install the Curse Client [URL] a program that manages your add-ons, both guides [URL] do not currently work no matter how i follow it.

Currently have a dual boot HTPC running windows 7 & ubuntu 9.10 , windows pulled "no longer a valid"on me after an update an i was left with a limited machine. I figure now is as good time as any to go full with a fully linux system. However, i am having some problems.
1) Windows 7 needs purged from my system.. like a cancer. I need to get rid of my sda1 windows partition. I gathered i will need gparted and grub2.. But will i need a Gpart liveCD? I need someone to take my though it.
I got and ran Gparted. My system seems to have 3 partitions with 2 unallocated spaces.
2) I will need to remount the windows partition after i reformate it and get rid of windows. I will likely need help with this as well. believe it is also worth noting that i believe wubi was used to put Ubuntu on this machine.

On my Linux system, I want to create a symbolic link to a folder on my Windows 7 partition formatted FAT32. I use:
sudo ln -s /media/OS/Users/dennis/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft ~/.minecraft
However, I end up with a file in my home directory called .minecraft and when I try to access it, I receive:
bash: CD: .minecraft: Too many levels of symbolic links
is there a way to make the symbolic link to the FAT32 folder?

I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 for awhile now, and I wish to create a partition for Windows 7 so that I can dual-boot. I know you all are cursing me right now, but I have no choice. I run too much high-end software for business purposes that I need to.
I have dual-booted before, but that was when I had windows xp on a primary partition, and I seem to recall that was necessary. I dual-booted ubuntu afterwards as a trial basis, and then I completely switched to Ubuntu 100% for the last couple years. Unfortunately I need to go back. Is it possible to create a file partition for windows as a secondary partition without wiping all my data?

I have a question about the ln command for link creation. I have both Windows and Linux partitions on my system. While I'm working on linux, sometimes I need to access the data stored on my windows partition. Yet, the access is provided through /media directory and I often, I have to click on several folders in order to access windows "My Documents" folder. So, in order to avoid this, I decided to create a link to "My Documents" folder directly from my $HOME directory.
Code:
$ mkdir /home/dariyoosh/MyDocuments
$ ln -fs /media/disk/Users/dariyoosh/Documents/MyDocuments/* ./MyDocuments
The link was created without any problem and now I have a direct access to that folder just by a click. Yet, there is a problem. If I update any file of the windows MyDocuments folder within this linking directory, the file is actually updated on the windows partition, which is of course what I want to do. But If I decide to create a new file on the windows "MyDocuments" folder by using this linking folder, that is, /home/dariyoosh/MyDocuments, the file is put actually on the linux partition instead of the windows MyDocuments folder. So, having created a directory linking to another directory, is there any way to proceed so that any file operation, in particular, creation, affects directly the linked directory?

I have two hard drives in my desktop. One HD has a working Ubuntu system-hence the ability to post here- and the other contains Windows XP Pro. When the XP drive crashed I was able to re-install an image I had saved using Acronis. Unfortunately the dual-boot option at startup is no longer available. I can only boot to Ubuntu. Not so bad really but there are some programs on Windows that I need to use. Is there any way, using Grub perhaps, that I can reconfigure an MBR to include the second hard drive and the Windows system?

There are basically two main limitations with hard links:
Hard links normally require that the link and the file reside in the same file system. Only the superuser can create a hard link to a directory.
Thus, symbolic links were introduced to get around the limitations of hard links. So, the question is, are hard links still needed? Might there be situation where they are more useful?

I have a Java program (minecraft server) that needs to be run from the command line. The code is:
Code:
java -Xmx512M -Xms512M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
To make life easy (i've got the java file in a folder on the desktop) I want to have a shortcut (or similar) sitting on the desktop. I've tried
Code:
ln 'java -Xmx512M -Xms512M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui' ./../minesraftserver
with single and double quotes but my unix command line skills are pretty basic and this is obviously incorrect.

I have heard that creating hard link to a directory is not possible however when reading the man page of "ln" the "-d/-f" option says hard link directories ( super-user only). Thus this mean the super user i.e root can create hard link to directory and not a normal user , If yes then you . Even on specifying the above options I get a operation not permitted for a super user.

I have installed gcc-3.3 & g++-3.3 in ubuntu 9.04. Now I want to change the default compiler as gcc-3.3/g++-3.3. After creating links to newly installed gcc/g++, gcc works fine but g++ doesn't work.
When I give "$which gcc" or "$gcc --version" it works fine, but when I give "$which g++" it gives nothing and also "$g++ --version" it gives an error "the program 'g++' can be found in the following packages: * g++..." When I installed gcc I gave the command "$configure --perfix=/opt/gcc33 --program-suffix=33 --enable-languages=c,c++" . When I give "$which g++33" and "$g++33 --version", work fine.
I tried following:
$export CXX=g++33
$sudo ln -s g++-3.3 g++
Nothing happens. I am very new in Linux and I need to install ns2.1a9b in gcc-3.3.
