I've read a bit here about making PDF's searchable using a bunch of different programs and utilities. It seams with errors and I'm not sure if it has been ironed out.I have hundreds of old documents that I need to scan. I would like to scan them to searchable PDF's. I won't have issue scanning them to plain PDF's, but how do I make them searchable. Is there a scanner available to ubuntu that will do this, currently I have simple scan.

I can't figure out how to specify a particular scan size in xsane. The only place I can find to change size is in preview, where there is a drop down list of choices including letter port. How do I specify an arbitrary size in inches?

I have an Epson Workforce 520 all in one that sane recognizes. If I tell sane ( via Simple Scan in Mint Linux ) to scan it scans only from the flatbed. I'm pretty lost here. I want to scan from the document feeder. Do I need to get another model? If so, which would work. I searched the sane hardware compatibility list, but it is not easy to determine if a scanner's ADF works from that list..

Ubuntu 10.04, xsane 0.996, Brother MFC 240c scanner.I just finished writing a long dissertation on my problem with this scanning environment (which I will spare you). In a nutshell the resulting image, when printed, is smaller than the original document. In writing my dissertation for this post I determined that the cause of the issue is that xsane believes I am scanning an 8.5 x 14 inch document when I am in fact scanning an 8.5 x 11 letter. So the question is... can I change the size to 8.5 x 11? and if so, how? I have not found anything in the xsane Preferences.

In Ubuntu 10.04 using Document Viewer 2.30.0 I've noticed that every time I open the program or a PDF file I haven't opened before the window size seems to reset to default. Thumbnails sidebar re-enables, view goes back to "Fit Page Width" and the actual size of the window goes back to being very small (default).

Is there a way to get Document Viewer to display Chinese characters in a pdf? Adobe Viewer does but I would prefer to avoid proprietary software. I cannot get either Document Viewer or Okular to properly show Chinese characters in pdf documents downloaded from my college class homepage.
I have all the Chinese language support files, bells and whistles (both traditional and simplified) loaded and operational. When I create a Chinese document in OO Writer and save it as a pdf, both DocViewer and Okular display the the Chinese characters properly. I just cannot get either DocViewer or Okular to display Chinese in pdfs that are downloaded from the website of my course's online textbook/workbook.
Running 9.10 full boat version on an EEE 1000HD netbook.

Request help with scanjet 3500c operation. xSane .996 in Ubuntu sees scanjet and scans. As soon as scan completes, the xSane windows(2) disappears and there are no copies in the intended save folder in Documents. Upon original attempt, the xsane windows had an additional third "Preview" window which has not returned since that first scan attempt?
One is not a computer guru by any imagination!
Info; the scanjet worked very well on the other "doze OS" and seems now, does not in the Ubuntu OS. In Doze, there was also a program for a HP PhotoSmart 3200 running and when I added the scanjet it might have been happy with that driver. Currently I do not have access to the driver disc for the 3200 with me. Too, it now takes ~45+ seconds for the scanjet to begin as compared to 2 - 3 seconds on doze.
Some internet self help searching seems to suggest the xSane 1.0.18 is the driver choice to use with the HP 3500c scanjet. When attempting to download, an archive "Failed" notice appears. I am a bit lost from here.

The following are the two tex input files written in vi and compiled with pdflatex. In the first case the document details (author, date etc) are displayed as desired but are omitted in the second case. The only difference is the use of maketitle.
Case 1:
documentclass{article}
author{Name}
date{}
itle{Title}
Begin{document}
maketitle
Text to be inputted
end{document}
Case 2:
documentclass{article}

date{}
itle{Title}
Begin{document}
Text to be inputted
end{document}

I know that you can make it full screen, however it just makes the background OS's background black, and still provides a smaller display. Is it possible to make the guest OS's screen (or display) full size?

I started a thread that just brushed on the topic of running Xsane to scan with my HP c6380. However, the subject did not go very deep. It was alot about the printer, but not very much about scanning. It was also a previous installation and version of FedoraKDE. Now, I would like to take a moment to ask how to get Xsane up and running so that I can scan with my printer. I have it installed using $yum. However, the icon has not appeared anywhere and I am stumped.

The one thing that has stopped me switching over to Ubuntu was getting my scanner to work. I finally resolved this issue. Here are the set I followed to get it working. When trying to scan with XSane I would get the device not found alert. Using the sane-find-scanner command would find the scanner as a USB device. found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x0851) at libusb:001:006 I amended the "rules" file for xsane /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules added the two following lines
[code]...
Now I have a fully working colour scanner, bye bye windows

I am new to Ubuntu (Karmic with GNOME). I have a Samsung LED UEB7020, with an Asrock ION 330 BD player feeding to a Onkyo TXSR607, AV rec. The other day I downloaded NVidia v180.25, which was very useful, because it immediately solved an earlier teething problem of no sound. However immediately upon re-booting and ever since, the screen size is too big for the TV, meaning that I can not see the top, bottom, side and left of the display by about 2 inches either way. I have checked the NVidia resolution settings and they are correct for the TV, ie 1920 by 1080.
My etc/X11/ xorg.conf file reads as follows:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

I need to print some documents I created in OO (.odt), but our printers are not Linux compatible, which means I somehow need to transfer the files to a Windows computer. I can't use the .odt files because MW can't open them (I can't install OpenOffice on the machines), and saving in either .doc or .docx does not work either because it totally messes up the document. So I tried print to file and created several pdfs, but again Adobe Reader on Windows can not open them. I am sort of running out of ideas, and the other thing is I am not really sure if the files I created are pdfs at all. When you open them in gedit they all start with
%!PS-Adobe-3.0 which to me looks more like a post script file.

Im currently using OpenOffice.org Writer to write a hand in document for my course. I've come to the point where I want to create a graphical tree in Draw to present an idea and then add this document into writer. I've tried to use Insert -> Object -> OLE Object, and add the document as an inline frame. This looked pretty ugly though, either it's too small or there seems to be no way to just resize the frame without stretching the whole document into unreadability.

So I have a couple Ideas, but I haven't found how to implement them, maybe someone knows how to do it, and could point me to the right direction.
1.- Use the webcam. Is there any way to use my left thumb to control the scrolling trough some kind of gestures in the webcam. 2.- Create a shortcut. I tried to create a new shortcut and assign it to the bluetooth key of my laptop, but I couldn't find any "command" that means scroll down

My father saved a document in openoffice.org on our Ubuntu computer, but it seems to have vanished. There is no icon in Documents (where he said he saved it) other than a zip file which doesn't have it in it. The only place I can seem to try to open it from is in OpenOffice itself under "Recent Documents", but when i click on it, it says "filename.odt does not exist", and i cannot right-click to open it with another word processor. I don't have backups enabled I noticed in OpenOffice's settings, but surely the document is somewhere! I checked in the trash but it's not in there. It's very important and he spent hours and hours on it, it would be terrible to try to write it again. I am very unfamiliar with the Ubuntu operating system as I myself have Windows 7,
