May 6, 2010My computer made it to the "Cleaning up" phase, and then overheated. Any ideas on how I might finish the process manually?

Feb 26, 2011With windows I was able to leave my computer on my lap and go for hours on end its never overheated on me and it still doesn't with windows, but with ubuntu it will last around 30-1h then it will overheat or even faster if I do anything like play a game or watch flash. And its not a problem with the new flash release because last year when I had ubuntu 10.04 it did the same thing (im on 10.10)

Dec 29, 2010After some time (thirty second - a few minutes) computer hung (screen froze, I couldn't switch to console, only hard reset helped). From log message I suspected graphic card and I replaced it to some other based on PCI Express (GeForce 6200). It's better. Computer works fine during office work (OO, Firefox, ...), but after being a few minutes in 3D mode (e.g. game with graphics 3D) hangs in the same way.
The last messages in log are always code...
Ubuntu :: Upgrade Old Computer To 11.04?
Apr 22, 2011I use Ubuntu 10.10 on an old laptop with 1.7 GHz Pentium M processor, 1 GB RAM, and Intel 915GM graphic chip. Of course the performance is low but it is acceptable. Especially because the graphic chip has poor 3D performance I'm worried if I should upgrade to the approaching Ubuntu 11.04 and GNOME 3. What do you recommend?
Would it be an option to upgrade Ubuntu but continue to use GNOME 2? Is it recommendable to use the 2D fallback mode of GNOME 3?

Jun 1, 2010While upgrading to a newer version of Ubuntu I noticed a warning saying that the installation/upgrade should not be interupted. Unfortunately though, during this process my computer froze up and I had to shut it down. Ubuntu no longer starts on my computer. I still have Windows though, which is what I'm using now.

Jul 25, 2010I have a Toshiba Satellite A300D which has a normal, Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit and Vista 64-Bit dual boot. My problem is, on Ubuntu, the laptop overheats and crshes very fast, 5-15 minutes. I have the AMD GPU driver activated, and it is all normal, I havent done any tweaks apart from a GRUB tweak, that only lists 1 Linux Kernal at a time.

I keep getting a message on startup (although not every time) which tells me the critical temperature is reached (87 C) and the machine is shutting down (unfortunately it's not being written to the log). I then reboot after it has shut down and it's fine.

Jan 1, 2011I have configured Kaffeine to work with my Hauppauge WinTV HVR 950Q USB device, and am able to get channels scanned, and can get sound, video from channels, etc. However, its use overheats my laptop to the degree it literally shuts down- turns off! Any suggestions? It took some effort to get this to work in Ubuntu 10.10; however, if it heats up the laptop to this degree what good is it?!

Jun 18, 2011I have noticed that the Acer Travelmate '10.04 netbook', is heating up while bringing it out of suspended mode,that's when it does'nt decide to turn off the whole machine instead. Should 'nt it be asleep?.. I would use hibernate but that surely does'nt come back on. I stopped trying so I used suspend instead. but the temp must be around 48� .I removed a usb mouse that fed off the power supply and still left a usb in ,but that shouldnt prevent it from goin to bed ,right?..Windoze doe'nt like it ,emm does't do it , Not notsleep ...

Aug 15, 2011When I connect my flash drive into the USB port on my computer, it starts overheating and within 1 minute, its too hot to pull out with my bare fingers. But when I plugged it into USB port of my Pioneer CDJ 2000 (DJ player), it didnt overheat and it was able to read files (I did firmware update). Should I throw it in the trash and buy a new one? It's only 2 GB drive.

Jan 21, 2010I've got a Dell M90 with an NVidia Quatro FX 3500 gpu. In Windows it would idle at around 45degrees. In Ubuntu 9.1 it idles at 65. Doing anything at all takes it up to 75-80 and playing a 3d game takes it to 90 withing a couple minutes.

Oct 9, 2010Last night I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and now my system is bugged. If I accidentally enter the wrong credentials at login, the computer freezes - consistently. This happens at login on startup and when unlocking the screen after it goes to sleep. Additionally, my fingerprint reader which is built in and worked perfectly before the upgrade is causing the computer to freeze after a scan to login or unlock the computer. I haven't noticed any advantages to this newer "lighter" version of ubuntu so I'm not at all opposed to a complete downgrade back to 10.04.Unless someone has a straight solution to this problem - which I doubt, just let me know how I can downgrade my kernel back to a stable version that actually functions to basic standards..
P.S. I know that the upgrade deleted/turned off some "uneeded" or absolete repositories, so I went thru and reinstalled all those involved with the fingerprint scanner, and still the same results, even after a restart so..
Ubuntu :: Upgrade The Physical Computer?
Dec 1, 2010I am currently using linux on my old system (store bought Gateway). I am building a new computer for Christmas. This is how I want things to go down: Set up new computer > install new hard-drive (as primary) > install (this) hard-drive (as secondary) > copy full contents from current drive to new drive > boot from new drive > Use (this) hard-drive from there on out as a backup/storage.
Will this work? Will a new mobo/processor combo mess any with my current system as a whole? I know that when I use to use gentoo everything was compiled "system specific", however, I do not believe ubuntu operates this way (well they are both goign to be a 64bit capable processor, which I think is about as specific as ubuntu gets)
Furthermore, I will be transfering my current videocard (GeForce 9800 GTX+) into the new system, so I will not need to configure any new video drivers. But what about audio? I currently use onboard audio, and will be using the new mobos audio as well.
General :: I7 Overheating During Install Of Fedora/Ubuntu
Jun 4, 2011I was hoping to install Fedora 15 x64 on my desktop on a seperate disk from Windows. I have tried about 15 times so far and keep getting errors. The same type of errors occur when trying Ubuntu 11.04 x64.
This is the spec of my PC:
Core i7 920 oc'ed to 4.00ghz (stable in Windows with temps under 60 degrees celcius at load)
Asus Rampage II Extreme
Sapphire Radeon 4890
6gb Ram
Install disk is an empty WD Caviar Black 1TB (Also, not sure if this is relevant, two soundcards - M-Audio Audiophile & Asus Xonar)
This is the error (I can't get it all written down because it reboots too quickly, so I've written down a selection):
SPU 4: Machine Check Exception: 4 Bank 5: be000000000800400
TSC 564..
And lower down the error: No human readable MCE decoding support on this processor type
I suspect this is due to overheating because when I boot back into windows the cpu temp has risen to 80+.
Is there going to be any way to get Linux on this machine without frying the processor?

May 22, 2010I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an acer aspire 5715Z and now I have overheating problems. Originally Vista was installed on the laptop and no overheating problem was observed. I think fans are not working now, cause I never hear them.

May 4, 2010I was put somewhat in charge of a server last semester running Ubuntu. It serves as a router and general purpose computer for a robotics lab. Yesterday, I went do dist-upgrade using the command line, and ran into a couple of bugs with gtk libraries which I fixed based on the bug reports. However, the computer decided to reboot for some reason in the middle of the upgrade and killed the running OS. I currently have it up on a Debian recovery CD. I can't get past intramfs without the CD. It is dying somewhere in rsyslog with an error about a broken pipe. I am not sure where to go from here. I will post actual error messages when I get back infront of the machine. No one knows how the machine was set up in the first place and it holds a few secrets we need to keep, so reinstall is the last option.

This computer is dual-booted with Win 7, and the shutdown command there properly halts the system.

Nov 9, 2010I was upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 when my laptop crashed due to a HW issue not related to upgrade. But now when I start:
1) The laptop, it boots up till the point GDM log in screen is displayed without any log-in option. The system does not respond to any keyboard or mouse actions.
2) when I try to recover (recovery mode), the boot process comes til a point where it says "Console: switching to color frame buffer device 180x56"
And the prompt just stays there. It does not not drop to terminal. When I choose an older option in the grub, I do get dropped to initramfs prompt. How to restore my machine. re-instillation is not an option as I have some data I need in the home directory.

Dec 4, 2010My daughter rebooted my computer while it was upgrading from Karmic to Lucid.
Now, of course, it won't reboot

I do have a very current backup of /home
I don't have a backup of any configuration files (/etc/conf and so on?)
I think that I will have to overwrite the whole installation and then restore my /home directory, which will mean tweaking all my software installations again?
Is this my best plan of action?

Dec 27, 2010While updating from 10.04 to 10.10, the PC got accidentaly rebooted. After that I am unable to start even 10.04. A small window tells that GNOME manager didnot install properly. The PC hangs after tat. How do I restore the 10.04 version without reinstalling it.

Apr 30, 2011I upgraded the computer at work from 10.10 to 11.04 yesterday and that went okay. Some issues, but I can work them out. I thought I'd get the computer at home done yesterday too, but that failed. I'm now operating off of a USB drive. I also have Windows7 that I was able to function off of (probably have 3 hours logged on Windows in the last 4 months). Anyway, I have an AMD64 with 4 hard drives, of which we have 2 RAID settings so it's more like 2 hard drives.

May 24, 2011Just wanted to upgrade my desktop computer and after the terminal shows:
Installling new version of config file /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.cupsd ...cups start/running, process 7944
The display froye, mouse does not move any more, keyboard does nothing, no chance to escape into a text terminal. Nada. After rebooting the system I get a kernel panic. This is now second of two upgrades to 11.04 that failed, and I do not know how often upgrades failed previously, but rather often.
Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Shut Off During Upgrade?
Aug 2, 2011Last night I decided to upgrade to Natty Narwhal 11.04 from MM10.10. I tried to leave it to install overnight.
Some bright spark turned off the power supply to my computer.
I don't know exactly what stage the installation was at, but it must have been installing the upgrade at least, because I'm now locked out of my computer.
Boot up progresses until the ubuntu loading screen. At this point is says,
'Ubuntu 10.10'
The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present Continue to wait; or press s to skip mounting or M for manual recovery.
(If I press 'S', it says something like 'cannot find /tmp folder')
I don't know if the upgrade installation was completed, but I suspect not, because the power was turned off just an hour into the installation. Also it still tries to load Ubuntu 10.10.
Anything I can do besides formatting for a fresh 11.04 install? If only to save some files?

Mar 6, 2010BlizzPlanet reports that people are seeing their nvidia graphics cards overheat when running the Windows 196.75 driver and playing 3D games. I have to wonder whether I fell afoul of this issue. A week ago I installed the 195.36 nVidia proprietary Linux driver on my Karmic Koala system, after adding the PPD nvidia-vdpau repository to my sources.list. I restarted so the new driver would take effect... and was surprised to see the graphics chip temperature soar to over 130 degrees Celsius. It fried itself. When I opened up the case, I checked the card's fan, and it spun freely, and I'd not heard any noise of the sort that accompanies a dying fan. I'm sticking with 190.53 for now. Has anyone else seen overheating difficulties with the 195.36 driver?

Jun 18, 2011Had the laptop for about a year, when in Windows it never happens, but seems to happen frequently in Xubuntu 11.04. I've looked almost everywhere for increasing the fan speeds, because it never kicks into high gear, just a steady pace for idle use. lm-sensors doesn't show fan speeds, just the temps of the CPU.
As far as this thread goes, I've already got the latest kernel.
Fan is clear of dust, and it runs at an average temperature until the GPU is needed code...

But when i was installing ubuntu i noticed that win vista was taking up part of the C drive (like 10 gigs!) (i saw this in the part of the instalation where you set the ubuntu partition.) SO anyway i was wondering if anyone knew a way to completely get rid of the vista kernel and free up that space its taking up.

Oct 14, 2010I was upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 and the computer completely froze and I restarted it thinking I would be able to restart the update where I left off (I'm new to ubuntu). However when I restart I can't get anywhere, if I boot normally the ubuntu screen comes up and then it stops with the computer name in the middle of the screen and thats it (can't do anything i can't get into shell via ctrl-alt-f1 etc..) if i use the recovery from the grub menu it loads a bunch of things then stops i can't type anything but I can switch using ctrl-alt-f1 and ctrl-alt-f7 but I don't see anything except:
under ctrl-alt-f1 the last line reads:

Ubuntu :: Computer Not Booting After Interrupted Distro Upgrade
Jun 9, 2011My distribution upgrade got interrupted in a hard way and when I start the computer I get some errors:

or sth like this and a few more errors. Can't look the exact message as I am writing from the liveCD. On Gparted the boot looks normal and it is said that it's mounted but there is no mount point. There are things on the hard drive that I must save.
